When one surfer calls to another surfer to take off on a wave; a great wave that everyone else wan

When one surfer calls to another surfer to take off on a wave; a great wave that everyone else wants and you're the only one in the perfect spot to take it; a fun wave among many fun little waves you're sharing with friends; or a sucky little wave that gets your heart racing because you'll eat it if you don't fully commit to it; when you're called into a wave you're supposed to go.

Eddie started playing this game with me when I was learning to bodyboard, although, he didn't call me into critical waves, they were more like soft little one-footers. Anyway, lately I've been thinking that I didn't get the point of the game; I didn't really understand how it was supposed to be played. So while we were in Forster this weekend I decided to ask Eddie about it.

Me: I've been thinking about when I was learning to bodyboard... do you remember when you used to call me into waves and I'd paddle for them and a lot of them would close out on me?

Edd: *sly grin* Yeah?

Me: We'll I've been thinking about that a lot lately 'cause, it's taken me a long time, but dont' think I understood the game.

Edd: *Puzzled* Whaddaya mean?

Me: Well, I thought the aim of the game was that you called me into waves and I worked out which waves were rideable and took off on those and didn't go on the waves I knew would close out. I mean, I know it was funny when I took off on the close-outs and got smashed, but I still thought I was supposed to avoid them.

Edd: Yeeaaah?

Me: Well, over the years I've seen groups of boys out bodyboarding and calling one another into waves and they always go the close-outs. And it only clicked a few months ago that that's the same game you play with me, except I don't get it. I thought I was supposed to avoid the close-outs, not go them.

Edd: Well yeah, but you don't always go the close-outs, it depends on the waves and how big they are...

Me: Yeah, but we weren't surfing critical waves then; they may have felt critical to me sometimes, but they weren't and I should have gone. And that's why all those young guys get so good, because they get it, and they go anything. That's why you go when you're called in.

Edd: OK

Me: What I want to know is, is it a girl thing? I'm trying to understand why I didn't get it, but all those young guys seem to get it. Is it because I'm a girl,? Or is it because we were boyfriend and girlfriend and the dynamic was different and I thought you were just playing more of your tricks on me?

Edd: Nah, it's because you didn't grow up with it. It's part of the surf culture to call friends into critical waves. There are plenty of surfer-girls out there who would have grown up with their brothers and been called into close-outs and gone. It's just that you came to it late, so you didn't experience the whole culture of it.

Me: Oh... I never thought of that... oh... how funny, that I've been bodyboarding for ten years, and feel like I understand a lot about the surf culture, but I guess I've been more of an observer than a real participant... Ten years it took me to get it! *I wonder what else I don't get and not just about surfing*

Like most sports, the best way to learn to surf is to do it. Learning to surf is a fantastic way to

Like most sports, the best way to learn to surf is to do it. Learning to surf is a fantastic way to have a lot of fun, learn something new and get in some great exercise. Undoubtedly one of the best places in the world to learn to surf is Australia. The surf culture is so deeply rooted in Australia that coupled with the extensive coastline means that practically anywhere you go in Australia you will be able to find a good cheap surf school to get you through the basics and to the fun part within a few hours.

Now is the time you have been waiting for, jumping up and riding on the surf board. Buying a Surf board: Your first board can really be the breaking point when it comes to whether you will pick up the sport or quit in frustration, many of us see the pros riding on their slick 6ft short boards slamming the lip and making it look like not only a hell of a lot of fun but also a real easy thing to do. It isn't, Taj Burrows the current world number 2 surfer claimed that surfing was without a doubt the most difficult sport to progress in period. Unless you choose the right equipment to match your level you are just adding to the difficulty. Your first surfboard should be a big buoyant soft-top fun board. Reasons, well first they are very stable so standing up will be possible within one or two attempts, they are soft so you won't slash open your flesh with the fin, or crack open your skull on the first wipeout, they are cheap and lastly they are very easy to paddle and generate speed on, which is one of the most fundamentally important part to surfing!

This is when the real work begins - paddling. Paddling will get you out to the good waves, and paddling will help you catch one. Beginners quickly learn that surfing is mostly about paddling. Paddling well takes some time to learn but you need to do it. Without the ability to paddle you will not only never catch a wave, but more than likely never even get to the line up! So many times I have seen a beginner surfer spend a stack of coin on all the latest cool hi-tech gear and then spend an hour getting thrown around in the white water, wondering how everyone else made it out the back, it is 90% in your paddling ability.

The Inevitable Wipe Out: Once you learn to paddle the first type of wipeout you are likely to experience is the cleanup, this is when a wave that has already broken slams into you and throws you around like a ragdoll, at first far from fun. The second type of a wipeout and without a doubt the most horrific is going over the falls, this is from not having enough paddling speed to catch the wave early enough, getting sucked up the face and pitched over with the lip. This kind of wipeout is very common with new surfers as they have yet to learn to read the waves properly and don't have the technique to rectify the problem! YOU WILL GO OVER THE FALLS get used to the idea, it is no fun at first, but it will make you a better surfer the more you do it.

The best way to learn to surf is to go surfing. But remember to be safe, take a lesson or two and be respectful out there, surfing can kill, but it is without question the most amazing feeling on earth!

[caption id="attachment_481" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="The first day in Hawaii when the waves were calm"][/caption]

There's nothing equivalent to the feeling that you get when you are riding on top of a wave. There is nothing like knowing that you are standing on something beyond your control, something wild, something amazing. It's a surge of energy that makes you feel more alive then you've ever felt before.

I've mentioned in previous posts how my Grandmother died the day I landed in Hawaii to work with my Youth Group. On the following Saturday, 6 days later, the church that we partnered with invited us to come to their surf ministry. So, we came. I had never surfed before, and honestly, I was anxious about trying it. I'll confess, I am terrified of sharks. I HATE the idea of even being CLOSE to a shark. I took a lot of time to get used to the idea of surfing before paddling out. 1/2 way though, I became exhausted. I hadn't even gotten to the person who was going to help instruct me and I was ready to quit, but the adrenaline kept me going. My instructor gave me a few words of advise, then pushed me off. I felt myself floating, then all of a sudden I realised this was it, I was being pushed by the wave, and I could stand now. I slid one foot on top and then the other, and it was amazing. All of a sudden I forgot the pain. All of a sudden I forgot everything in life-all I knew was that I was on top of a wave, and it was AWESOME! As I road the wave in, I got to thinking (perhaps I think too much). This was so much like my life.

I am terrified of many things. Wasting my life, not doing the will of God, messing things up for other people, hurting other people etc. There's so much that keeps me from paddling out into the ocean-the waves are high, and it is risky. People have died in the ocean, I know that all too well, and all too closely. It's not easy to take paddle out into something that has the potential to hurt you.

We all have fears in our life, if you don't....talk to me and let me know how you don't! You have them right now. A decision needs to be made, a change must happen, you are struggling with sin and know it has to end-whatever it may be, there are things that keep us from experiencing what God wants us to-Freedom. The freedom of riding over our waves. The freedom of standing on top of them, announcing that you have achieved victory over fear, and struggles. That's what happens when we take that risk though. We may crash and burn, but in the end, we rise above and try again. Ultimately we learn to stand on our solid support, and ride the wave to the shore.

I encourage you to continue to paddle out into the waves surrounding you. Don't give up. Though it may be hard, in the end, you will find you feet on the soft sand of the shore of the living God if you fully rely and depend on Him to help you make it through. He is strong, He is able, He is worth the risk.

note: I bet getting hit by lightning is the easiest thing in the world; probably most victims don't even try.

It started off about a week ago, the charts were looking bloody amazing, the wind looked a bit sketc

It started off about a week ago, the charts were looking bloody amazing, the wind looked a bit sketchy but in Ireland the winds are always changing. As the week progressed it became clearer that Saturday was going to be too windy to bother checking anywhere so I decided to stay in Cork until Saturday night. Friday evening was still looking pretty solid for Sunday so we kept to the plan and headed up to Clare on Saturday evening.

It turns out it'd had actually been a pretty good day, on shore but fun. Pretty much everyone had entered a surf comp and had a pretty fun day, final came down to Fergal, Ollie, Damo and Kiwi transplant Liam Joyce. They only announced the results in the pub that night so everybody was out and in pretty good form, possibly because of the cheap (i.e. free) drinks promotion that bar was running. Ferg took the win in the end, the band started playing an fun was had, until the next morning.

I picked up a crazy hungover Damo at 7am. Turns out there was a price for all those free beers :P

We headed down the coast to the one high tide spot we were banking on, but the wind had gone just the wrong direction during the night and the spot looked awful, good old reliable Ireland eh? Turns out the swell was way smaller than expected as well.

We headed back to Lahinch to have some brekkie. Danny macs does a pretty sweet Surfers Breakfast (good old chips for breakfast, can't beat it) if anyone's ever looking for something in Lahinch I'd recommend this place. We headed up to Damo's then to check out the new Relentless DVD . It's fricken awesome by the way, really makes me want to give up everything here and just go travelling. We actually bumped into Fergal and Lowey later on in the day. It's pretty weird to watch a surf vid and discuss the waves and the guys style and then meet them later.

Pumped the video we decided to go looking again and headed off to reliable Dougie. By this time Ollie had joined the us and was pretty keen to get wet as well. It was small but the boys suited up anyway, Joycey was there already punting over the heads of the unsuspecting beginners in the lineup.

Damo and Ollie followed him out and proceeded to tear the crap out of the knee high dribblers.

Eventually the boys got tired of doing the same turn 7,458 times the came back in and we decided to call it a day.

We started heading back up the coast to Lahinch but along the way saw some white water off one the points and went to investigate, the tide was still a little low but there were a few slabby barrels coming through. I really wanted to make the most of the sun so I got the boys back into their suits and started racing down across the reef.

The first wave we headed out to was a left but by the time we got into the lineup the tide had pushed over the shelf and it wasn't really doing it anymore. There was a right just around the corner that was starting to work so myself and Ollie paddled over to check it out.

The bad thing about this was that we came in at the wave from the back. If you paddle out to a wave you usually get to watch a set or two break so you can see where the impact zone is. We just randomly paddle into a spot where we though the take off was, Ollie caught a small one and was paddling back out when a proper set came through and unloaded right in front of me. I tried to go under but the water was only about two foot deep so I got a ridiculous beating in which both fins got ripped off and I ended up sitting on some dry reef 100m down the line, not nice.

Damo had paddled over by now and managed to scrape into a few little barrels himself. Ollie was perfecting his late drop technique but always seemed to be hitting the lip just past me. But these things happen, I was just happy to be out there on a sunny glassy afternoon with two mates.

Not a bad end to the day.

I found this while stumbling around the internet today. It's a wave-like structure by Jean Shin made from melted records. The provided commentary:

Records were melted and sculpted to form a cascading wave, dotted with bursts of colorful labels. The resulting structure speaks to the inevitable waves of technology that render each successive generation of recordable media obsolete. The piece also aims to physically manifest the ephemerality of music as well as one man’s musical tastes, as represented by his personal record collection.

I have written about sound art installations before, and am happy to see Jean Shin's piece receiving some press. Clicking around on his site I found another installation/sculpture of his made from rolodex-style notecards. The Dewey Decimal system comes to mind, and I'm reminded that over the past 5 years I haven't seen a card catalogue in a library. This piece and the clumsily-named Sound Wave are both tedious constructions reminding the observer of the relentless and fickle nature of technology.

Not the most profound statement, but I share similar feelings.

Aika on taas jatkanut ikuista matkaansa samaa tuttua tahtia, jolla se on edennyt alustansa lähtien.

Aika on taas jatkanut ikuista matkaansa samaa tuttua tahtia, jolla se on edennyt alustansa lähtien. Mutta suhteellista on aika pienelle ihmiselle; viime päivityksestä on ehtinyt taas vierähtää turhan pitkä tovi. Tovin aikana on tapahtunut yhtä jos toista...

Vaunun suhteen ollaan taas palattu normaalitilaan. Loppuasennus suoritetaan normaalisti.

Jotta homman saa puoleentoista tuntiin tehtyä, noita syklejä on käytävä läpi neljä sekunnissa. Ranteen kipeytyessä on vaihdettava kättä.

Friday I managed to leave work early to hit up Oktoberfest in Sacramento. The German partying was ridiculous. After a few beers at Tony's work and hanging with his co-workers, very cool people by the way, we took a quick walk to a party hall where Oktoberfest was being thrown.

The German fun was a blur after a couple of Spaten pitchers to myself. I remember ending up with a couple girls at Ink later on that night. The bar fun dragged on and I wanted to go home, I called my faithful roommate Tony and he came and rescued me from the endless fountains of beer and liquor. It was nice not to have anything planned on a Saturday morning. Usually I'm full of hustle and bustle to go climbing or get to the coast. Instead at 8 AM I got up and spent the morning having a great and huge breakfast with a friend while the rain dripped from the redwoods outside her sliding glass doors.

The afternoon was dedicated to reorganizing my room and going to IKEA to deck it out with shelving and some mirrors to give the illusion of having space!

Chicken wings and whiskey were on the menu Saturday night but we all played it pretty chill and I got some rest for a beautiful day of surfin' Marin's elegant coast.

I blasted to Bolinas Sunday morning for a warm up surf and got just that. The first wave I tried for I rode in. I swerved and carved my way around logs and other debris that were washed ashore from Friday's storm.

An older man on a wood long board caught every wave I saw him go for. He must've passed by me surfing with his giant, old, grin about 15 times. He must've been 65 and was still riding hard!

I had my fill of Bolinas and headed for Stinson Beach. I made a quick stop to see large waves but only a couple surfers going for them. Instead of staying there I made a jolt for Rodeo Cove which is in the Golden Gate Recreation Area. A surf spot I had only heard of and had never been.

I rolled down Highway 101 toward San Francisco. I made it to the exit and shot up a large windy hill that looked over the Golden Gate Bridge. The pearly white city of San Francisco glowed behind the bright red megalith. It was the best view of San Fran I had ever seen. After I pulled away from a lookout I headed down an immense hill that dropped straight down to the ocean. The one way road pulled me toward Fort Cronkite and into a giant cove.

I could see the small specks of surfers out in the distance. They were riding giant waves nearly 15 feet tall at some points. I was nervous to get into the water with a huge break like that so I took some photos for a while.

It was 6 PM and the sun started to set over the Pacific. The smell of Ocean and the joy of surfing reflected in the eyes of the riders that I was shooting. I took a deep breath and said "lets go for it."

I ran to the car and threw my wetsuit on. I grabbed my board and headed for the beach. The waves were huge and scary. I, along with another surfer, ran toward the break as it fled from the beach and we jumped on our boards. We were carried quickly out to sea, toward an amazing breaking wave.

Once I was in the water it was a lot easier to make it through to the edge of the waves than I thought it was going to be. I got out into the line up and waited and waited. I caught the first wave I could and the nose of my board dropped so fast and so steep down the crest. I biffed it hard! The rolling wave washed me around but I was OK. I tried again and again but couldn't get down the steep face only, to ride the top.

Embarrassed, but pleased that I actually had the nuts to get out and try huge waves, I headed into shore. I had some trouble getting in and once I was on the beach I tripped over my leash a couple times. A couple girls sitting on a log giggled at me while I walked by. I made some stupid joke about being the retarded surfer there for their entertainment. They laughed again and I headed for the car.

A surfer that was parked next to me handed me a water and said "here man you want one?"

I was grateful. The surfer had a brand new huge blue van filled with boards, his wife and his baby girl. I thought that was neat, to be able to grow up with surfing in your family.

I packed my gear and took a couple more photos. A raccoon ran by me and stood on two legs saying "hello", and " wheres your food!" I laughed and took a couple pics of him.

I looked out toward the coast and the beautiful dusk that filled the sky. I wished I lived near there. I wished it wasn't so far away to Sacramento. I knew that I had a job and life waiting for me back in the valley. I said goodbye to the crashing waves and sped home.
