Felt good tonight, just walking in the cold, empty library, a pile of books in hand.

I realised that perhaps the reason why I have been feeling somewhat stressed and bothered lately is because the Saturday tuition thing does somehow zap up some free time that I could have spent reading something or just hanging around. Yeah, it's work, and I gotta work for my money, but let the man dream a little, will ya? I've been so far away from things I like to do - miniatures painting and gaming, roleplaying, boardgaming, watching tv shows while eating, 2 hour exercise sessions. Right now it's just japjapjapjap.

NUS sells the Eeepc for $540. Damn. That's like paying something like 700 (with upgrades) for a macbookmini. Even a fucking iphone Touch costs more than the price of the netbook itself.

Reading up on Markedness Theory now.

My thoughts haven’t been so systematic recently. Sometimes, life seems to lull, routine reasse

My thoughts haven't been so systematic recently. Sometimes, life seems to lull, routine reasserts itself, and thoughts flitter across my mind, none of them nesting... coalescing, it seems, into that perennial problem assailing even the most ardent of writers: writer's block.

You may have noticed, seeing as I haven't written anything for quite some time. However, a subject of discussion has sprung up such that I've produced this post.

It began as I was speaking with a friend of mine the other day, when the topic of libraries came up - yes, I talk about libraries with my nerdy library friends - and she spoke of what I suspected was a spectacular solution to certain somethings over which clients and customers can complain. That something is, in a word, access.

Libraries, to be libraries, not just organised piles of disused books, need to be accessible. Public libraries shelve serials by title, organise fiction alphabetically, categorise their non-fiction collection by the Dewey Decimal or other systems, not because they're staffed by persnickety pedants (... well, that's what we tell people...) but so that the public can locate the information they're after, access the material, and become so happy that they leave piles of money lying around the floor for us.

... well, that last step hasn't really followed, but it'd be nice.

There's more to access than this, of course. All of this orderly organisation is hardly helpful if the library is a hundred, thousand footsteps from your house, perched precariously upon a cold and uncaring cliffside, creaking cavalierly when the slightest breeze blows. There are some people who, even though they could use the library well enough when they got there, aren't able to access the library's actually physical location, for whatever reason.

So, back to the forementioned suggestion: small, storefront library branches, opened once or twice a week, not holding any of the collection, but from which members could make and pick up requests from the main branches.

Not a bad idea. The elderly would benefit, the infirm would benefit, persons with disabilities would benefit, the library would get greater exposure in smaller suburbs that are distant from the central branch, lazy people would rejoice.

From there, though, the conversation progressed. Why a storefront library? Why not (as some libraries do, to an extent) offer a portable service? A laptop with remote, offline access to the catalogue, able to take requests from customers, a van carrying requests to be picked up at that location... This could be set up, theoretically, anywhere a van could be parked, subject to council restrictions, which one would hope would be flexible enough to accomodate one of their arguably most central services.

Such problems would be placated by such a scheme. A golden age of library use would be upon us, an age in which the populace would rise up against ignorance and intolerance; an era of open-mindedness, widespread education, worshipful admiration of nature; a time of truth, trust, and triumph for all individuals from every walk of life!

... ahh. There's nothing quite like a good, semi-deranged preach.

Anyway. One day, I shall be Lord of the Libraries, and these ideas will be more than just words upon the wall of the web.

Until then... I wait.

A little over a month ago I moved to sunny Los Angeles, California from my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio in order to be closer to my girlfriend who moved to L.A. in January of 2008 in order to further her acting career. Upon speaking with her and some of her friends about how the needs of so many aspiring actors/actresses, writers, directors, producers, and a bunch of other professions are and can be fulfilled by other aspiring industry professionals via some online classifieds websites (that will remain nameless). Those needs range from headshot photographers to location management and from reel editing to finding a lightly used HD camera.

The only problem with those websites is that the ad is in competition with so many other ads that are unrelated to the film and theater industry. So why not create a classifieds website designed specifically for people in the film and theater industry? I found a few, but they weren't easily navigable and they were filled with advertisements that were in direct competition with the ads within the classifieds. Why would you want to post an ad selling your services as a headshot printer on a classifieds website that has advertisements on the side that are in direct competition with your service?

Thus, crewcastclassifieds was created. The site's first day online was October 4th. Since then I've been pretty much glued to the computer editing scripts, adding modifications, brainstorming, and preparing the site for use. My goal, from a users standpoint, is to make the site very user friendly and simple. So far I've given users the ability to register for an account, added an in-house forum, the ability to embed Youtube videos in an ad, created a large list of cities, added a FAQ section, and included google maps. There are definitely going to be more modifications in the future.

So right now there are just a few more things that need to be done before I start actively promoting the site, the main thing being the creation of a logo. I've already designed it, I just need it formatted for the site. I will also be changing the layout. Right now the site looks pretty narrow with whitespace on the left and right. Hopefully by the time anyone reads this the site will look nice and wide.

I'll be updating this blog with progress I've made and any issues since I'm constantly testing the functionality.

Spotlight: Concussive Force
This card is just begging to be abused. We all know how powerful Mystical Paralysis is, and that's a simple one-for-one. The ability to suppress attacks off-initiative is key in any control-oriented deck, and never before has a card eschewed the need for combat so effortlessly. Yes, your opponent gets to choose which characters are exhausted, but the most common game states consist of no more than 3 characters on either side. So, in most situations, you're only allowing your opponent one attack of any importance, which significantly cripples their chances at putting a dent in your board. Oh, and it's just downright nasty with The Captain. [Insert obligatory statement about Pathetic Attempt negating it here.]

Spotlight: Multiplicity
Note that it exhausts a character whose cost is less than the combined cost of the MMs you exhausted this way (not the number of MM, as you're first inclined to believe). Multiplicity is cute, but your first instinct is that the thing is going to be binder decoration and nothing more. It's just too narrow. We've seen this sort of thing before, as far back as Entangle. It's dependent on you drawing a flood of 1-cost Jamies, and having them survive for turns on end (since this card's net benefit is negligible before turn 4 at the earliest). Wait....what's that? There's going to be a 2-cost Multiple Man in MEV? And it's ARMY? Wow. This card just got 10x better. Even if you hit absolutely nothing on turns 1 through 3, you can still exhaust their 3-drop on turn 4 if you fill out your resource points that recruit step with Multiple Men. I expect this card to see legitimate table time.

Spotlight: Iceman, Jack Frost
I'm not going to mince words here: Iceman is NUTS. I'm still in disbelief as to how good he is. He doesn't do anything to stop attacks on the turn you play him, but assuming you have even initiative, he can prevent a key swingback from their 3 on turn 4, which is crucial. But then....you read him a second time. And you realize that as long as he activates on the same character each turn, he can prevent him from EVER readying again. Now throw Energize into the mix -- he SCALES up their curve. Each time it's their initiative, at worst, you're getting 2 activations out of him. Which means you can continue to lock down their previous drop, and freeze their newly-recruited guy on top of it. Recover Iceman at the end of the turn, and repeat the process on your initiative, locking down their next-highest character, then Energizing off the swingback (if necessary) and freezing their big guy. Rinse and repeat. He may very well be TOO good.

Spotlight: First Class
I'm honestly not very impressed with First Class. Most of the people on VsRealms are fawning over it, so I'm probably in the minority here, but hear me out. Historically, recovery cards that exhaust another character as the cost are sub-par. Why?

Analytical Vs.: Because it's not very glamorous to forgo an attack on your own initiative to recover a guy, considering that that lost attack will often times result in a swingback. So you put the recovery card into your deck with the intention of using it on your opponent's initiative. Problem is, now the card becomes dependent on your opponent making subpar attacks, and/or not having flight. The ideal scenario is that you have a guy in the front that gets stunned, then you exhaust a protected character to recover the front row guy, making your opponent have to go through him twice, and saving you a KO at the recovery phase. But what if your opponent's characters have flight? It's now impossible to use the recovery as a way to dictate where your opponent attacks. Meaning, if your opponent swings upcurve and then downcurve, you haven't really gotten any additional board presence by recovery. You've just increased the liklihood that you won't have to KO your next-to-highest drop. Well, given how they attacked, your opponent probably isn't doing it either, so what advantage has the card really given you? There are ALWAYS better tricks available.

Consider for a minute a version of First Class with its standard/Boost costs reversed. Now THERE'S a card I want to play. In a deck that curves up with a steady X-Men / X-Factor dual affiliation theme, it's copies 5-8 of Children of the Atom, and its Boost cost is viable on either initiative.

First Class is certainly not a bad card. I'm just not wowed by it.

That's it for Week 1! Thanks for reading!
