Die musikalische Besserwisserei hat einen Namen- und der lautet nicht immer Maya, in diesem Fall ist es Charly, der auf Ergänzung von Chloes Betrachtungen der Friedrichshafener Szene und Richtigstellung drängt. Bei einer Besprechung des Artikels kamen wir zu unterschiedlichen Interpretationen des Satzes:

Da ich an dem Abend Autofahren musste, konnte ich mir selbst die Rock’n'Roll-Version von “Tainted Love” nicht schön klingend trinken…

Maya maynte: Die genannte Band spielte das Stück im Rockabilly-Set.

Charly legte aus: Bestimmt wurde vom DJ im Lauf des Abends das Original, von dem zu wenige Leute wissen, dass es das Original ist, gespielt.

Zumindest liegt es ihm sehr am Herzen, dass eine Tatsache zur Sprache kommt, die da lautet:

Nicht die 80er Jahre Soft Cell Version, die als DIE bekannte Tainted Love Ausgabe fungiert, ist als Original zu nennen, sondern die Northern Soul-Variante aus den 60er Jahren, gesungen von Gloria Jones! (Geschrieben wurde es übrigens von Ed Cobb)

Da im Kommentar kein Video gepostet werden kann, beziehungsweise ich noch nicht weiß, wie es geht, bekommen die Dame und unser Interpretationszwist einen eigenen Eintrag.

1981 Number One Singles

1980 was one of the more fruitful years for number one singles with artists like Bowie, Blondie, Lennon and The Jam producing some of their best work and topping the charts as well. Sadly, 1981 signalled the arrival of the 80s, the decade in which mainstream music died as musical fashions and movements gave way to a conveyor belt of manufactured pop.

The year started as the previous one had ended as John Lennon’s murder gave him the first two number ones of January with the horrendous bullshit of ‘Imagine’ and sickeningly schmaltzy ‘Woman’. Competition for this year’s worst number one single was down to a couple of stinkers and although there would be worse to come in following years the quality of chart toppers started to take a nose dive this year.

5. Shaddap You Face – Joe Dolce Music Theatre
Perhaps I could have given a nod to Smokey Robinson’s number one but that’s a bit twee and not really proper Smokey. ‘This Ole House’ and Roxy Music’s version of ‘Jealous Guy’ were also in with a serious shout. The problem is that, like in sport, outside the top the decline in quality is noticeable so this gets into the top five for sparing us from Vienna the song and video, although I'm sure Top Of The Pops continued to torture us with the video every week. If you do like Vienna may I recommend Vic Reeves' cover version (available for download) which gives the original the kind of treatment that it deserves. And here's Samuel L Jackson's interpretation when on V For Vendetta's show.

4. Japanese Boy - Aneka
Selling five million copies worldwide Aneka was a true one hit wonder in the UK. Completely ludicrous, incredibly catchy and so cool that it appears on one of the radio stations in GTA: Vice City. Hell yeah!

3. Don’t You Want Me – The Human League
Just scraping above Aneka is not The Human League's finest moment but it's still good enough to get in here. The UK's 25th top selling single of all-time and thankfully it cleared this year's worst number one single off the top of the pile in time for Christmas. I've always found Fascination and Susanne Sulley's Yorkshire accent more pleasing to the ear though.

2. Tainted Love – Soft Cell
A number one single in seventeen different countries, staying in the Billboard Hot 100 for a then record 43 consecutive weeks although it would be the band’s only US chart hit. Originally a northern soul track it is one of those great cover version rarities that passed into cliché many a wedding ago, however that shouldn’t detract from its pop brilliance. Great video as well.

1. Ghost Town – The Specials
An easy choice in 1981 for the best chart topper. Still a powerful a comment on social disintegration and must have been a strong influence on The Kaiser Chiefs’ ‘I Predict A Riot’. One of those peerless songs that sounds unlike anything else you’ve ever heard with that almost cinematic opening, painting a picture of forceful spectral winds seeping through cracks in all the boarded up buildings of early 80s inner city life in the UK. A true masterpiece of a tune and easily one of the best of all-time.

WORST NO.1 OF 1981: It might have only spent one week at number one but Julio Iglesias’ ‘Begin The Beguine’ is excruciating. It’s not that the song itself is bad, far from it because it isn’t, but when you hear that smooth crooning sliding over Cole Porter’s lyrics men lose faith in women.

POPTASTIC FACT: ‘Tainted Love’ was backed with another cover version, ‘Where Did Our Love Go’ which meant that as none of Soft Cell wrote the songs the royalties they earned from this monstrous hit were greatly reduced.

Die Friedrichshafener Szene

Friedrichshafen wird unter den zugereisten Locals auch gerne "Friedrichschlafen" genannt. Dennoch versuche ich mich ja auch immer wieder eines Besseren zu belehren. Normalerweise trifft man sich hier eher zum gemeinsamen Kochen oder auf "Grillen & Chillen am See". Die hiesige Ausgehkultur habe ich bis auf die legendäre Outdoor Party, die jedoch nur einmal im Jahr stattfindet, noch nicht richtig auskosten können. Als wir also neulich zu Acht nach einem Essen sowie einer Schlammbowle etwas angeheitert waren, kam bei den anderen die spontane Idee auf, mich ins "Belushis" zu schleppen. Ich ließ es geschehen. Plötzlich standen wir vor diesem Schild.

Déjà-vu! Mir war die Bar bei einer meiner Irrfahrten durch FN bereits schon mal aufgefallen. Die Außenfassade ließ mich jedoch vermuten, dass es sich hierbei um eine der typisch albanischen Diaspora-Treffpunkte handelt. Gute Tarnung! Ich wäre von mir aus wohl nie reingelaufen. Innen sah ich dann ein großes Bild der Blues Brothers hängen. Die Tanzfläche war so groß wie mein Wohnzimmer und auf derselbigen tobten die drei Jungs der Cover Band Danny and the Wonderbras. Plötzlich erklärte sich mir auch das Publikum in Petticoat und Haartolle. "Rockabilly", schrie Maya am Telefon nach meinen Schilderungen. Maya maynt, dass die Groupieanzahl nicht zu unterschätzen sei!

Da ich an dem Abend Autofahren musste, konnte ich mir selbst die Rock'n'Roll-Version von "Tainted Love" nicht schön klingend trinken... Nein, ich sollte die schlechte Laune nicht auf die Band schieben. Vielmehr war ich sehr traurig darüber, einen guten Friend am Berg verloren zu haben. Nicht einmal mehr mein Tanzbein wollte zucken vor betrübter Stimmung.

Dagegen ist der Terminator weichgespült!

Da der Sommer kurzfristig zurückkommt und ich neulich leichtsinnigerweise Schnittlauch offen in der Küche herumliegen ließ, hier mal ein Hausmannstipp:

gehätschelte Gattung der Drosophila Melanogaster

Man nehme ein kleines Glas, fülle es mit drei Teelöffeln Zucker, gieße heißes Wasser darüber und rühre kräftig um, bis sich der Zucker vollkommen aufgelöst hat. Anschließend füllt man ein wenig Essig und Spüli hinein. Et voila! Fertig ist die dreckig gemeine Killermaschine! Ach ja, und man entsorge großzügig den verfluchten Schnittlauch.

Und damit dieser Blog-Eintrag zusätzlichen Service-Charakter enthält, hier noch ein kleiner Musik-Tipp für die Bastelzeit (Und ja, es ist das Original)!

Hay veces en la que los artistas realizan versiones de canciones originales que, sin dejar de ser buenas, en mi opinión se ven superadas por los cover.

Os pongo un par de ejemplos, y decidid vosotros si en estos casos son mejores los originales o las versiones.

Para empezar el original de los Misfits del tema "Die Die, My darling".

A Confession, a Thought, and a Ditty

First, I feel I best come clean:

I have to make a confession I too have never seen Single White Female, but I did watch a very informative "Making of" documentary when I was like 12 years old, and I've read the back of the box at least twice. So, I mean, I've basically seen the movie, but not quite. I still stand by my comparison, however.

Okay, in hindsight, I admit my brief thought that Toad had "passed away" in chapter two might on the surface seem ridiculous, but pardon me for experiencing the book as I read it, and not just making assumptions on my preconceived notions of what a story "should be." Who knows, maybe Kenneth Grahame was going to play some wild narrative games. Maybe from chapter 2 The Wind in the Willows was going to take a Momento-esque flashback style story-telling technique in which the deceased Toad featured mightily. Sure, in the end this was not the case, but it could have been, right?

Now, about the aforementioned ditty. The "ditty" being a bit of specialty of mine, and as a point of fact, I actually wrote a duck ditty of sorts a number of years back, and I thought it might serve as an interesting 21st (or technically late 20th century) contrast to Grahame's similarly subjected ditty. So here's mine:

Knitting - it's radical, man.

OYes, yes, I know - my lingo is slightly behind the times. What exactly did you expect from someone who prefers musical selections from old dead British crooners a la Rat Pack?

However, I'm prepared to be wowed by new concepts, particularly when I'm in a bit of a knitting funk. So, I was very glad to come across some web pages yesterday with some fresh knitting ideas.

First, how about some radical lace?

This is a photo taken at an art show in New York back in early 2007 - the work is by Cal Lane. I wish I'd thought of that, frankly.

Ah - eureka! Given some of my obsessions, it should have been quite obvious, no?

A knitted rubber duckie! Although, is it truly a "rubber duckie" if it's knitted??? Hmm....

Well, why not? I just found a website called Unifly Rubber Yarn Products!!!

I guess it's official... the possibilities are, in fact, endless.

You're right, ME! You know, just because I work in a record store doesn't mean I know everything about music...far from it. Everyday I learn something new, like, Soft Cell covered "Tainted Love". Huh? I guess some Soft Cell fans knew this, but I'm not a super fan of them or GLORIA JONES.
