"There is no such thing as free lunch", as the old saying goes. Thus, there should be no doubt that there is no way that you can achieve substantial performance boost for free. Or is there?
One of my friends works in largest Croatian assembly of computers. In our conversation couple of days ago, he said that worst nag in assembly of computers is removing the jumpers from Seagate hard drives in order to enable SATA-II (aka SATA 3.0 Gbps) support. If you don't remove the jumper, the drive will stay in SATA-I (1.5 Gbps) mode.

[caption id="attachment_21" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Label that nobody reads..."][/caption]

Intrigued by this one, we've called our friends and visited them and saw that many of computers that have Seagate drives on - have the SATA-I jumper on. Seeing that jumper on in Dell OptiPlex 700 series machines only goes to show that even large OEM vendors don't care about user experience.
We learned from one Seagate representative in EMEA region that the company made the call to disable SATA-II by default, in order to enhance the compatibility with older motherboards. OEM vendors can ask for delivery of the hard drive with SATA 3.0 Gbps mode turned on, but so far, nobody asked for it. If you jump the gun from WD or Samsung to Seagate, make sure that you pull one small jumper from behind the drive... that jumper locks the drive to SATA-I mode and that's it.

[caption id="attachment_22" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="White jumper that limits the performance of your drive...by default."][/caption]

I took several 250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 and did a quick test in HDtach 3.0. It turns out that every hard drive experienced a major improvement in burst performance. Read speeds were positively affected as well.

[caption id="attachment_23" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="This is performance of 250GB Barracuda 7200.10 by default (jumper on)..."][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_24" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="...and this is what you get with the jumper removed. This is the same drive, same SATA cable, same power cable."][/caption]

Given these numbers, I would advise that if you have a Seagate drive, check to see if your drive has SATA-I jumper on. If the jumper is there, remove it and experience the full speed of these silent drives.

Of course, if you have a motherboard with SATA 3.0 Gbps controller.

As a child I always saw myself helping countless people. Serving is truly the essence of who I am

As a child I always saw myself helping countless people. Serving is truly the essence of who I am & for most of my life this has been a double-edged sword. The words of Henry Van Dyke in his short story The Mansion resonate in my soul daily, " What could I have done better? What is it that counts? 'Only that which is truly given," answered the voice. Only that good which is done for the love of doing it. Only those plans in which the welfare of others is the master thought. Only those labors in which the sacrifice is greater than the reward. Only those gifts in which the giver forgets himself." So this double-edged sword of my souls ultimate desire to serve has finally become my ultimate blessing & my life's work. For years I would bang my head against the wall as I was not born with a trust fund, I was not educated at an Ivy league school, I was not blessed with "fame" however these supposed "hurdles" in my life are my actual blessings. My unquenchable desire to be a force for good is a flame that will never be extinguished because I don't have a trust fund, I didn't go to an Ivy League school & because I can't carry a tune & didn't win American Idol & end up touring the world. It is that simple! What I do have is the ultimate desire to serve humanity and after 12 years of working professionally in the non-profit world the Interface Foundation was born.

As most of you know last year Interface came to life. The Interface Foundation is a 501(c)3 private foundation whose mission is to leverage the power of business and celebrity to bring attention to high impact organizations working to accomplish one of the eight Millennium Development Goals established by the United Nations in 2000.

There is no greater peace than knowing your life's mission! With Interface I work 24/7 in doing all in my power to get humanity to help humanity! Each and everyone of us can contribute in some way & I am here to guide the philanthropic ship of Interface to the ultimate destinations where high impact philanthropic initiatives will change countless lives. Eradicating extreme poverty & hunger (850 million people suffer fromt the tragedy of hunger). Allowing every child in the world to receive primary education (presently 125 million children don't go to primary school). Promoting gender equality & empowering women. Reducing child mortality. Improving maternal health. Combatting HIV/AIDS, malaria & other diseases. Ensuring environmental sustainability.

In a very short time we have seen hundreds, thousands of people come together to learn about Interface partner organizations, we have seen donations of time, money & products, and equally as big we have seen people spread the Interface mission! It is a testament to the power of Interface. Choose your goal & we will help you support it!!!

I have to give huge thanks to the business community and it's true philanthropic leaders like Steve Luczo from Seagate, Brent Bishop, Josh James of Omniture, the famed music video director Hype Williams, Randy Blosil of Xango, Alex Hoffmann of Nu Skin, Brandon Fugal of Coldwell Utah, Bernadette Turner of QVC, Darren Dixon, Charlie Walk President of Epic Records, Brent Bolthouse of SBE, Bryan Ferre of Cultivate Ideas, Andrea Donsky, Jim Evans of Xactware, Jason Deere, Maggie Biggar of Fortis Films, Lisa Spackman, Joel Sybrowski, Jeron Paul of V Spring, Bernadette Hill, Lisette Sand-Freedman of Shadow PR, Jessica Weitz, Dee Murthy of Five Four Clothing, famed music producer Harvey Mason JR, Lisa Nelson of ICAP, Joe "3H" Weinberger, Cynthia Garrett, Kirk Lee of Intuit.

And I have to set the record straight here after being asked a million times if celebrities are truly engaged in causes because of their own heart or is it a PR move? Well after being involved with some of the biggest names in the world, I have to say regardless of the celebrity's initial reason for getting involved I have text message, emails, voice messages, & hand-written thank you notes that show they can't wait for the next opportunity to serve humanity. With that I want to thank a few now by giving them a "shout out" -- Jeremy Piven of Entourage, Vanessa Williams, Eric Mabius of Ugly Betty, Jesse Metcalfe, Lance Bass, Sheila E, Sandra Bullock, Shannon Elizabeth, Tom Higginson of the Plain White T's, Terri Seymour of Extra, Edison Chen, Paul Wall, Paris Hilton, Marla Maples, Patrick Muldoon, Blake Lewis from American Idol, Michael Moloney from Extreme Makeover:Home Edition, Laura Harring, artist Paul Rusconi, Miss USA Rachel Smith, and Billy Bush from Access Hollywood to name a few.

Let's continue to come together to change the world. The goals are simple. The mission is pure. Remember what the poet June Jordan taught us: We are the ones we have been waiting for.

Today I received a Seagate FreeAgent | Desk from a promotion that Seagate held when they launched their facebook page last week (link).

I am going to offload all my podcasts from NautiCast (find them in iTunes U), backup 14 tapes of content that still needs to be edited and uploaded in iTunes U.

This is great news because now I can keep the source DV files, keep an Apple TV version, an iPod High-Res version, an iPhone version as well as audio extractions. Granted, it is only USB2, but it beats having your main hard drive crammed 98%.

The goal is to have all media assets on a NAS and have other participants from The Scholar Ship program be able to grab content from here as well as drop their media here. This might involve at least 4TB of space. If you know of anyone willing to sponsor this important Educational Podcasting Series, please let me know. I can arrange your logo to be displayed at the lead-in lead out segments of the podcasts. Contact me directly here.

Today I attended the lunch of Seagate's 3 new products, the eternal hard drives in the Free Agent Series. The three products were launched by Mr. Rajesh Khurana (Country Manager for India and SAARC countries) himself. These products are pretty good indeed. They are:

Freeagent Go. This is a 12.5mm thick 2.5" external portable hard drive which comes in the range of 250GB, 320GB and 500GB.

Freeagent Desk. This is 3.5" external hard drive capacity of which ranges from 500GB, 640GB, 1TB and 1.5TB.

Freeagent Xtreme. This drive comes with capacity of 1.5TB with 3 interphases i.e. eSata, USB and firewire 400 for mac systems.

Best feature for all these three products is that every time a data is stored on these, it gets encrypted and thus remains safe.

It was a great launch and was attended by quiet a few media and business professionals. At first it seemed, these products will be costly as they are of highest capacities till date in storage solutions and unique to this company. But, to my surprise they are very nicely priced keeping in mind the Indian consumers. No doubt that their largest consumers come from non-professional backgrounds. Sincerely, speaking it was worth attending this event.

Beware Seagate and Western Digital, Iomega is on the come-back!

Speaking yesterday at EMC's Innovation, Information and Security Summit held at the company's Silicon Valley headquarters in Santa Clara, Iomega CEO, Jonathan Huberman (pictured), predicted a massive consolidation of the consumer portable storage market (think USB hard drives), with only a handful of companies surviving in this cut-throat market largely dominated by the disk drive makers themselves.

"There's only a handful of companies in this market that can invest as much as we do in R&D and marketing. The disk drive makers are investing a lot in improving aerial density not really in design, packaging, etc.", explains Huberman.

Inspite of being dependent of disks suppliers like Seagate and Western Digital for its external USB drives, Iomega CEO still think it can compete in the portable storage market with the drive makers themselves.

"Seagate and Western Digital can make money selling portable drives when Iomega can't. However, EMC is buying a lot of enterprise drives from them too. So it's not like we don't have a leverage there", adds Iomega CEO.

But long term, Iomega is betting on the network storage market, where competition is sparse, rather than the USB drives for growth and profits.

"Consumers with several PCs in their home are the prime target for those network drives. But we have to make those network drives easy to use if we want consumers to buy. It's going to take some time and our advantage is that we have more than 60 engineers working full time on it. That's more than anyone else in this industry", points Huberman.

On the question about Flash drive adoption in the consumer market, Huberman doesn't see it happening before Christmas 2010... that's 2 years from now!

Seagate Services has shifed gears to become i365

Seagate has combined its services businesses into a standalone company called i365. The name reminds me of an interstate highway. The more I think about it, that's not a bad thing.

When the Eisenhower Interstate Highway System was first conceived, it was a radical new aproach to getting around. By building out a new infrastructure, personal travel was transformed. It affected much more than transportation though. The housing industry, economic development, city centers and leisure travel all went through significant and unforeseen shifts due to faster and easier transport. There's only so much you can predict.

i365 is one of a growing horde of companies riding the rails of a virtual equivalent of the Interstate Highway System - the internet - to provide faster and easier (and safer?) management of their data.

The internet is on a path to have a bigger impact on society than the advent of cars and highways. And like the Interstate System, who knows really what that will mean in 20 years?

I'm excited to see Seagate jumping in with both feet.

Passer de 160 Go à 5400 t/min à 320 Go pour 7200 t/min. Je me réjouis déjà, car mon disque dur interne actuel commence gentiment à être plein (presque 90%).

D'ailleurs, le 28 septembre, j'ai 21 ans. Alors, tu m'offres quoi ? Hein ? Dis moi, aller, dis moi !

On va rire.

On/Off-Taster antippen. Fertig.

Despite CEO Bill Watkins’ opinions on the long-term feasibility of solid-state storage

Despite CEO Bill Watkins' opinions on the long-term feasibility of solid-state storage for laptops, it appears that Seagate is going full steam ahead with its own SSD models anyway.

According to CNet, the company is looking to enter the SSD market as a serious competitor beginning next year. Rich Vignes, senior manager of market development at Seagate, states that “as solid-state comes online, we're embracing this new media type,” - a far cry from CEO Bill Watkins' comments back in March that he didn't see “the flash notebook selling.”

Initially building products aimed at enterprise-level customers, Seagate is unlikely to offer a large range of consumer-level SSDs until it feels it's got the business market down pat – after all, that's where the real money is. The main problem the company is likely to face – ironically, given Watkins' publicly-stated opinion of the tech – is getting the businesses to trust the relatively new technology of solid-state storage over the tried and true mechanical drive systems they have grown used to. To reach this goal, Vignes has said that Seagate will be working with the solid-state industry's standards body, JEDEC to implement some convincing benchmarks and metrics “as an industry standard” so that Seagate – and, by extension, other manufacturers of SSD – can back up their claims of increased mean time between failures with approved statistics.

Hoping that his company's expertise in the storage market will guide it through – describing the company's approach to SSDs as “existing market, new product” - Vignes has confirmed that, at least initially, the tech behind the drives will come from others more versed in the ins and outs of solid-state technology: “We're not going to make NAND [flash memory]. We are in discussion with all the premier NAND suppliers.”

Would you buy a Seagate-branded SSD even if the internal technology was from a different company, or are you better off with a manufacturer who rolls their own units? Share your thoughts over in the forums.

Seagate is getting ready to finally release an SSD product but not before next year. Apparently the company will initially aim at the enterprise market specifically, with the drives designed for use in servers.

Seagate is a latecomer in the SSD world, falling behind numerous companies, including Intel. Part of their delay was voiced by their CEO, Bill Watkins, who outright attacked SSDs as they exist today and claimed they were a minor part of the storage market. Seagate's decision to both attack and embrace the SSD market has been an interesting one to watch.

Shortly after claiming that if SSD became popular, they would sue certain SSD makers, Seagate remained true to their word and sued STEC. Both companies remain in court today as STEC tries to get Seagate's technology patents revolving around SSD declared as invalid.

So it’s finally happening. Perhaps Seagate saw the writing on the wall once Intel started ship

So it's finally happening. Perhaps Seagate saw the writing on the wall once Intel started shipping SSD's last month. It was hard to believe that the largest hard drive manufacturer had managed to resist market demands for so long. Perhaps you believe Rich Vignes when he says they are focused on perfecting the technology or maybe they are just stalling while the rush a product to market. The lawsuit against STEC was probably enough of a threat to get current SSD manufacturers to look over their existing patents, hopefully they are in the clear. Anybody else selling SSD's need to push sales and hope that they can gain enough market share to sustain sales going forward. Because when 2009 hits, everybody's gonna be buying Seagate SSD's.

I'm guessing Western Digital will be announcing "baby raptor" SSD to debut in 2009 as well.
