Gay men and women will oftentimes resort to uncommon practices in the attempt to find love, or in some cases, a quick fuck. The internet has provided many people with a fast and efficient tool in finding one or the other, and in the process, a new language has been born.

Shortening words and phrases to simply a few letters is an easy way to get your point across in a short amount of time. To learn this new short-hand, all you need to do is visit a site like craigslist.org or manhunt.net, and you will be fluent in a matter of days.

1. verb: man for man / woman for woman; used in the search for a sexual partner online

Buona chattata allora :) !

Crayola Crayons

Crayola brand crayons were the first kids crayons ever made, invented by cousins, Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith. The brand's first box of eight Crayola crayons made its debut in 1903. The crayons were sold for a nickel and the colors were black, brown, blue, red, purple, orange, yellow, and green. The word Crayola was created by Alice Stead Binney (wife of Edwin Binney) who took the French words for chalk (craie) and oily (oleaginous) and combined them.

In 1864, Joseph W. Binney began the Peekskill Chemical Works in Peekskill, New York, producing hardwood charcoal and a black pigment called lampblack. In 1880 he opened a New York office and invited his son, Edwin Binney, and his nephew, C. Harold Smith, to join the company. The cousins renamed the company Binney & Smith and expanded the product line to include shoe polish, printing ink, black crayons, and chalk.

In 1903, the Binney & Smith company made the first box of Crayola crayons costing a nickel and containing eight colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, and black.

The now-classic 64-box of crayons, complete with built-in sharpener, was introduced in 1958.

In 1993, Binney & Smith celebrated Crayola brand's ninetieth birthday by introducing the biggest crayon box ever with 96 colors.

In 1949, Binney & Smith introduced another forty colors: Apricot, Bittersweet, Blue Green, Blue Violet, Brick Red, Burnt Sienna, Carnation Pink, Cornflower, Flesh (renamed Peach in 1962, partly as a result of the civil rights movement), Gold, Gray, Green Blue, Green Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Magenta, Mahogany, Maize, Maroon, Melon, Olive Green, Orange Red, Orange Yellow, Orchid, Periwinkle, Pine Green, Prussian Blue (renamed Midnight Blue in 1958 in response to teachers' requests), Red Orange, Red Violet, Salmon, Sea Green, Silver, Spring Green, Tan, Thistle, Turquoise Blue, Violet Blue, Violet Red, White, Yellow Green, and Yellow Orange.

In 1958, Binney & Smith added sixteen colors, bringing the total number of colors to 64: Aquamarine, Blue Gray, Burnt Orange, Cadet Blue, Copper, Forest Green, Goldenrod, Indian Red, Lavender, Mulberry, Navy Blue, Plum, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Sepia, and Sky Blue.

In 1972, Binney & Smith introduced eight fluorescent colors: Atomic Tangerine, Blizzard Blue, Hot Magenta, Laser Lemon, Outrageous Orange, Screamin' Green, Shocking Pink, and Wild Watermelon. In 1990, the company introduced eight more fluorescent colors: Electric Lime, Magic Mint, Purple Pizzazz, Radical Red, Razzle Dazzle Rose, Sunglow, Unmellow Yellow, and Neon Carrot.

In 1990, Binney & Smith retired eight traditional colored crayons from its 64-crayon box (Green Blue, Orange Red, Orange Yellow, Violet Blue, Maize, Lemon Yellow, Blue Gray, and Raw Umber) and replaced them with such New Age hues as (Cerulean, Vivid Tangerine, Jungle Green, Fuchsia, Dandelion, Teal Blue, Royal Purple, and Wild Strawberry). Retired colors were enshrined in the Crayola Hall of Fame. Protests from groups such as RUMPS (The Raw Umber and Maize Preservation Society) and CRAYON (The Committee to Reestablish All Your Old Norms) convinced Binney & Smith to release the one million boxes of the Crayola Eight in October 1991.

In 1993, Binney & Smith introduced sixteen more colors, all named by consumers: Asparagus, Cerise, Denim, Granny Smith Apple, Macaroni and Cheese, Mauvelous, Pacific Blue, Purple Mountain's Majesty, Razzmatazz, Robin's Egg Blue, Shamrock, Tickle Me Pink, Timber Wolf, Tropical Rain Forest, Tumbleweed, and Wisteria.

In 1998, Binney & Smith introduced twenty-four new colors, brining the total number of colors to 120: Almond, Antique Brass, Banana Mania, Beaver, Blue Bell, Brink Pink, Canary, Caribbean Green, Cotton Candy, Cranberry, Desert Sand, Eggplant, Fern, Fuzzy Wuzzy Brown, Manatee, Mountain Meadow, Outer Space, Pig Pink, Pink Flamingo, Purple Heart, Shadow, Sunset Orange, Torch Red, and Vivid Violet.

Washington Irving used the pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon when he published The Sketch-Book, a collection of short stories and essays, including "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle."

On average, children between the ages of two and seven color 28 minutes every day.

The average child in the United States will wear down 730 crayons by his or her tenth birthday. The scent of Crayola crayons is among the twenty most recognizable to American adults.

The Crayola brand name is recognized by 99 percent of all Americans.

Red barns and black tires got their colors thanks in part to two of Binney & Smith's earliest products: red pigment and carbon black. Red and black are also the most popular crayon colors, mostly because children tend to use them for outlining.

Binney & Smith is dedicated to environmental responsibility. Crayons that don't meet quality standards are remelted and used to make new crayons. Ninety percent of Crayola products packaging is made from recycled cardboard. The company also makes sure the wood in their colored pencils doesn't originate from tropical rain forests.

Binney & Smith produces two billion Crayola crayons a year, which, if placed end to end, would circle the earth 4.5 times.

Crayola crayon boxes are printed in eleven languages: Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish.

Just go ahead and try to change your name. I dare you. I’m not even talking about officially, you

Just go ahead and try to change your name. I dare you. I’m not even talking about officially, you know, restamping the files full of official documents that give proof to your existence, an authenticity to your past and present. I can’t even imagine dealing with that – the tax returns, the social security card, school transcripts, the passport, car registrations, deeds, loans, bank accounts and credit cards. No, it’s hard enough just to change your name unofficially.

My given name is Mary. I have been called Mary all of my life. I was named for my Russian grandmother who came to this country in 1902 from Kiev, and who died a month before I was born. As a little girl, I was proud to have her name. I could feel how much love the name evoked for my parents when they spoke about her. My hope was that it would rub off. I figured her goodness came with the name so it was ok by me. Never mind that I was the only Jewish Mary I knew and often had to stand up to those who disputed that there could be no such thing as a Jewish girl named for the Blessed Mother. “I am so Jewish”, I’d retort, “just ask my mother.”

At this age, I have decided that Mary no longer works for me. It no longer describes who I am, who I have become. I have decided to join the ranks of men and women (many in middle age) who change their names to something that finally suits them. My friend Larry has become Lorenzo. Judy has become Lillith. Barbara is now Sarah. Elaine, Elana. And Margaret, the intriguing name of Catstone.

So I am now Mayzee. It feels right and I’ve tried on names like pants off the rack at Loehman’s for years. First, Mayzee begins with an “M” so it still has that soft mmmm sound I am familiar with and like so much. Maura, Magda, Maya, Mia, though certainly viable candidates, were just too serious to suit me. After considering each one, I found myself thinking, “Who am I kidding!” On me they felt pretentious.

I looked for clues. Mayzee has “May” front and center and being a May baby, it is the time of year I am the happiest, born again with the blooming of each pink magnolia. Then, coincidentally, years ago, it was the name May B. that I chose for a character that grew out of doodle and into a cartoon. I was quite fond of her; she was a kindred spirit.

So the sweet name “May” won the day and the “zee” popped up no doubt to add a dimension of lightness, joy, yes even silliness.

When I tell people about my new name they look at me funny. Some try to remember, some don’t. My daughter’s reaction is to roll her eyes, exasperated and somewhat alarmed. She asks me if I realize that “Mayzee” rhymes with “crazeey.” “Sure enough,” I say, “that’s right.” After all these years, I’m finally nuts enough to be myself.”

How about you? What name would you choose?

¿no? :p

In most cases, I am not a particular fan of the words "fag" or "dyke." But for today's post, I am bending my own rules to introduce a pair of really interesting terms. Today we are getting two words for the price of one! I think of them as like a yin and yang of transsexual terms. I recently came across "transfag" and "tryke" while doing some internet research for today's post. It seems as if there are as many ways to classify a person's sexuality - as there are people. I am constantly intrigued by the ways in which people refer to themselves and others when it relates to sex.

transfag - 1. noun: a person who is both both gay and female-to-male (f-t-m) transsexual. [Related: FTG (female-to-gay). See tryke.]

tryke - 1. noun: a person who is a male-to-female (m-t-f) transsexual and is also a lesbian. [Related: transdyke, female lesbian. See transfag.]

You heard it here first. Sarah Palin should be referred to as "The Governacuda."

I blame Gustav for tonight’s craziness. That’s hurricane Gustav. Thanks to him (it?) we

I blame Gustav for tonight's craziness. That's hurricane Gustav. Thanks to him (it?) we had lots and lots of rain today so the buses to pick up the kids were running really late. After dinner they were tired of sitting and ready to go, but they are supposed to stay in their seats until the bus leaves. Really. I don't think one hundred kids who have been doing mostly homework all day can sit still for an hour. They were really crazy and frustrated and on edge. And frankly, I don't blame them.

The one thing I am realizing, though, is that I'm something of a pushover. I'm not really sure how to handle the older boys (like fifth graders) when they don't listen. I'm afraid to yell at them and I can't force them to do something. So sometimes I just let them continue with what they're doing. Then I feel like I'm just telling them that I don't mean what I say. So I need to talk to some other people about that and get some advice.

Other than the end of the day craziness I felt like the day went really well. I'm focusing on trying to have fun with the kids. Like help them with their homework but get really excited when they do something right. And making them march down the hall to the bathroom instead of just walk. I want them to be excited about being at the club and excited about learning. One great thing about first graders is that they're still rather excited about learning. Here was a typical conversation today:

Me: So the sentence is, "Do you see the ____utterfly?" What is that word?

Giovante: BUTTERFLY!

Me: What sound does buhhh-tterfly start with?

Giovante: BUH!

Me: Right! What letter makes a buh sound?

Giovante: BEEEEEEEEEE!

Me: YES! Great job!

(High five)

I love to see them just get it. And see their eyes light up when I congratulate them.

In my free time at work I am working on preparing things for my own team. I want to have lots of hands-on activities and fun stuff for them to be able to do so that they are engaged in learning and not just doing worksheets. I don't want their time with me to be boring.

Oh, and another bonus of today is that I got my nickname from Ms. Freida, who is this awesome, crazy leader who works in Cabrini. Oh. Yes. My nickname is "K-Mack." Yes!

Would a rose by any other name, smell as sweet?

I found out recently (last night) whilst titting about at Legendary Noodle, that it took my parents three weeks to name me*.

This was news to me but it seems on a recent trip to Van, my mother told my bestfriend Fragglehump this particular anecdote - and frankly, I have mixed feelings about it.

First up, I was a little miffed that I could be so characterless for the first few weeks of my life that they couldn't even pull something out of the hat in a temporary fashion.

Then I figured maybe I had too much character and nothing short of miraculous would do. Most definitely that would have to be the answer.

But, on reading the below post (see: Lightle's masterpiece underneath) and with this new information, I have been thinking about names and nicknames all morning.

(All morning? First thought was "I'm hungry", second was "Did I forget to put knickers on?", but you get the gist.)

So, what's in a name?

My name is Christa.

A lot of people know that. I introduce myself to people I don't know all the time, because they are all just friends we haven't met yet, am I right? I bandy it about like it's going out of fashion.

Yet.

Hardly anyone actually uses it. Nobody who loves me certainly. Nobody who likes me. Only bosses and people who are pissed off with me ever really say it - and I like that.

I love the fact that with every person I am close to I can be someone new, someone unique and our relationship is our own.

Take for instance the aforementioned Fragglehump (AKA. Ellie). She has called me Loobi ever since that fateful day when Pheobe made up a goofy name on Friends and I said I wanted to be renamed Faloolah. Renamed I was and over the years it has been streamlined to Loobi. Sometimes Loobina.

Now even Fragglehump's mother calls me Loobi.

My own mother, now she's got the hang of me actually having a name, calls me Bella. As in Christa Bella. Because I'm beautiful, apparently.

My brother calls me Crunch. Or at least he did before he was cool.

To my other bestfriend, David, I am Dolores or simply 'D'. This stems from a story we made up (soon to be novel) involving two friends called Dolores and Tarquin. He's my T, you see.

To Char I'm Sexy Whore (self-explanatory), to Boo I am Pookie, to the Barman at the bar who possibly wanted to get inside my knicker elastic, I was 'English Girl' and then, promoted to 'Red' because, you see, I have red hair.

To the handyman in our building I am 'Smiley'.

As for my real name, the other day a kind soul told me it sounds like a porn stars name and in a sense I have to agree.

Growing up in England nobody at all had my name. Subsequently nobody could ever get it right. Spelling wise, pronunciation wise, the whole shebang.

I know. It's a complex name, right? Chris-ta. Ouch.

But then I got here and every second Soccor Mom or blonde Lulu Lemon-wearing bimbette is called Christa and I'm not unique anymore.

Which is why I embrace my monikers wholeheartedly.

And for the record, I like to use food or inanimate object based references for my friends and loved ones.

Lightle herself is always a foodstuff, usually 'Pumpkin' or 'Love Muffin'. Fragglehump sometimes gets 'Spooky Shoe' - and Tarquin?

Well, he's my 'Sex Trumpet'.

What's your nickname?

*I jest. I know how special I was/am to my mother and I appreciate that they didn't commit me to some godawful tag because they were pressurised by time. Apparently one day they stumbled across my name and it all began to make sense, which is lovely.

And to my Daddy, I was always 'Gold Angel'. So it all ends happily.

My name is now, has for some time been, and will forever be, Meghan Lightle. When I was born, it wa

My name is now, has for some time been, and will forever be, Meghan Lightle. When I was born, it was "Megan", but I changed it when I was in grade 7 to "Meghan." I had my reasons. They are as follows.

First, it looks better. Paired with Lightle, you get a nice symmetry of both names having a 'gh' in the middle. Aesthetics.

Second, my parents didn't like it. They were resistant to the change, and as the young rebel that I was, this was simply fodder.

Third, it initially happened by accident. I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing the first time I wrote "Meghan." As I said, I was in grade 7. French class to be specific, and I was writing my name on an assignment. Rather than look like a fool who doesn't know how to spell her own name, I carried on as though it was intentional, and never let on otherwise. Until now.

The truth is out there.

Fourth, and finally. It sounds better. Go ahead. Say "Megan." Now say, "Meghan." I'll wait.

It sounds different, doesn't it? Rounder, fuller, the 'g' is softer. I'm not taking a piss, there is a difference.

Trust me.

I love the sound of my name. It really rolls off the tongue, eh? Meghan Lightle.

That's 'Light-le'. Exactly how it looks. Say light. Now say le, as in tab-le or bott-le. Good job.

There have been only a handful of instances in my life when someone has read my name for the first time, and pronounced it properly. More often than not, I get "Little" or "Lightly."

Worse is when people can't spell for shit. I'll say, "Lightle" and they'll start writing, L-i-t-t, and I go, "Stop, L-i-G-H-t, etc. for fuck's sakes."

I grew up in a relatively small town, and knew a girl a year ahead of me at school named Megan Little. It seemed Megan had recently found herself in a family way. One day, my mom rang the doctor's office to book an appointment for me and the receptionist asked her if this was regarding pre-natal care.

Needless to say, that conversation did not go well. From then on, I've been trained to spell my name first, THEN pronounce it. Especially over the phone.

Megan was an exceptionally common name in my high school. At least 6 girls in the same year as me shared my moniker. We all had our own way of spelling it, but that didn't stop people from making mistakes like the one above. It also didn't stop our teachers from inventing clever nicknames.

One such instructor insisted on calling me "Meggie" a name I despise to this day. As I rule, I just don't like shortened versions of my name. Full stop. Maybe three people who aren't directly related to me are allowed to call me "Meg" or "Megs" when appropriate. I don't love it, but I know it's their way of displaying how close we are, so I accept it.

My parents and grandmother had their own favorites, and for years I was "Mega-muffin" and "Mega-mouse". Could be worse. My most hated common nickname is definitely "Miss Megan" because it's always meant to be condescending. Check for yourself, you'll find I'm right.

I will, however, always proudly be known as "The Wild Savannah Nut Meg." There's a great story behind that particular term of endearment, but perhaps I'll save it for another blog. It's a long one.

Some of you may have heard Adam refer to himself as Papa Bear. Cute but a bit long so it didn't take me long to shorten that to P-Bear which we sorta liked the sound of. After getting tongue tied referring to Grandma Linda half a dozen times last week, I knocked her name down to G-Lin. Luckily she liked it. We couldn't leave Great Grandma Sandman out so she's Double G. Now the only one not rollin' with a hip gangster name is ME. I've already ruled out M-Bear and M-Dog, but ALL other suggestions are welcome. Whatcha got?

I think one of the funniest parts about dating is the marriage of a lack of commitment with a large

I think one of the funniest parts about dating is the marriage of a lack of commitment with a large amount of association.
"Oh, not really into her. She reminds me too much of my old lunch lady."
"Yeah, don't think it's gonna happen. He was wearing alligator skin boots and let's be serious. NO ONE wears those any more. They're just so Burt Reynolds circa 1980."

And it's this association with things we either like or don't that helps us keep those we're not too serious about in the not-really-sure box... often in the way of a nickname. Nicknames are a dating essential. They allow us to remember the person by associating them with someone or something that we'll remember, but it also keeps things from ever becoming too serious because, let's be honest, once you know him as Socks (cause those stayed on), you'll never be able to refer to him as Steve or Sam or Silas ever again. Socks he will forever be.

This works both ways. Nicknames cross the gender line. Both men and women use them and, in retrospect, I've been privy to some pretty hilarious ones. I have two friends, one girl (Mae) and one guy (Zane), who really enjoy dating and have therefor fully engaged in the Nickname Game in order to "keep things straight." Below are some of my favorites from their respective endeavours.

Zane:
The Screamer (obvious reasons)
The Piston (apparently, her tongue acted as such when it came to kissing)
Bama (a woman he dated for a while who hailed from the Ala-Bama state)
The Swimmer (a non-athlete per say, this girl would mysteriously only wear her swimsuit to bed)
The Potato Farmer (she was experimenting with a strange diet that only allowed her to eat the fry-producing veg)
The Professor (because she was one... of his... and he didn't end up having to take that college final)

Mae:
Ballet Boy / Ken Doll (she called him ballet boy, because that's where he took on their first date; I called him Ken Doll cause that's who he looked like)
The Afghan (Terihk was great, but Mae and I began to wonder how long it'd take before the NSA showed up at both our doors for all of the email banter about "Afghani Action")
Lycra (a big road biker, he would often show up in spandex at inopportune times)
The Male Model (because he thought he was one, but after a few dates, Mae confided that he should probably stay away from underwear ads)
