Well, you've probably "experienced" movies, that you might have wished you didn't.

It's not your fault, most movies these days truly are dull and meaningless.

However, this blog will focus on those few features, that are actually worthy of your hard earned money ( or free ticket if you're a leech like me). If it's worth watching, we'll give you the heads up.

Stay tuned as we'll start of shortly.

Well, I’m not done clearing my conscience since this week I’ll be setting the record straight once again. What did I do this time? It’s more like what didn’t I do.

The “New” Defenders Can Kiss My Ass

About a million years ago, I wrote a section of a design article about Marvel Team-Up titled “Marvel Team-Up Design: Defending the Defenseless – An Underdog Story” on the old Metagame.com. Within said article, I relayed the following:

We decided very early on to use the art to reflect and drive home the disparity between the A and B teams. Of course, silliness ensued. If you take a close look at the B team character art and compare it to the A team art, you will notice that in almost every single B piece, the character depicted is either:

Surrounded by enemies . . .

Running away from battle . . .

Or getting humorously overpowered by monsters or demons . . .

Now look at the big four. What do you see? No embarrassing fruit cellar shenanigans, let me tell you (except for 4-drop Surfer; we just couldn’t help ourselves). I know what you’re thinking: “These guys totally hate my favorite characters!” That couldn’t be further from the truth. Everything we attempted here was done with extra love and infinite respect for the fans of the comics and the game. We would never purposely defame any character (Clumsy Foulup) or any team (The Skrulls).

What utter and total bullshit! Excuse me a second, I need to take this call…

…sorry. Mom says, “Hello.”

Yeah, you get the picture, right? Do I need to draw you a diagram? IT WAS ALL ON PURPOSE!!! THE NEW DEFENDERS SUCK!!! I did my best to make them look as silly as possible in the art and mock them in the flavor.

Alas, I failed. The artists we hired were too good and barely anyone notices. Sure, a couple of you complained about them, but the general consensus was that we did them all justice. BAH! Anyway, here’s the proof, some art descriptions from 2006.

Gargoyle.

Gargoyle resists valiantly, but he is definitely screwed.

Oh, here’s something else you didn’t know: at one point, we even considered cutting them all completely from the set since the “ass-factor” was so high. A Defenders team featuring just Namor, Hulk, Dr. Strange and Silver Surfer would have been just as great, if not infinitely more awesome. Consider this, my stunned friends: What if The Big Four had received “Legend” treatment way back in Marvel Team-Up, similar to the Fantastic Four in Marvel Legends? WOW, I can feel the blown minds through the interwebs. So, if you’re a New Defenders fan, thank the gods… or Andrew Yip, but not me. I hate you and your irrational love for: Angel, Iceman, Brunnhilde, Devil Slayer, Gargoyle, Hellcat, Sam Parrington, Nighthawk, Beast, and Iceman.

So, in conclusion: I am a lying liar. Nothing I say or write is ever true. Fair warning.

I feel so MUCH better now. Short and sweet, baby! I’m off to see The Dark Knight, so if you have any questions or constructive comments leave those below and I’ll answer every single one personally. If you want to bitch about your love for the New Defenders, you can shoot me an e-mail at: idontgiveashit@HAHAHAHA.net.

because of the crush, i went out to meet old friends and watch the Dark Knight (to avoid idle moments and completely lose it).

it was a normal day... the usual, i woke up around 2.30p ate breakfast, watched t.v. then i realized that i am still thinking about the crush. i'm going ga-ga even when he's out of sight. before i lose it, i sent a text to one of my friends and asked him if he wants to go somewhere. it was perfect timing, little did i know that we were in for a treat! our other friend just got his pay so he's going to treat us for a movie, the dark knight.

it was batman like no other.

i'm no batman fan, but it has become a habit of mine to watch a batman film everytime there is one from michael keaton to val kilmer to george clooney, and now christian bale.

it was modern gotham city. everything is hi-tech! they even now got a nokia. is it just me, or has gotham city been always part of america? when i was a kid, i thought that gotham city is a city in a fictional country just like ash from palette town in pokemon. now it somewhat imposed in the film that it is in america. hong-kong is also present which is a way of saying that "hey, we live in the same planet."

aside from being hi-tech, what happened to batman's voice? aint husky enough? blech!

heath's acting was superb! hands down to heath.

the best joker indeed.

oh, and let's not forget professor x, morgan freeman and his "cerebro" machine. could marvel sue them for that?haha it was so like cerebro from x-men, and batman is jean. haha

it was one of the best batman ever! if only they could cut it short... a bit shorter would be nice...

it's just too long! around 2.5 hours if i'm not mistaken.

good film nonetheless.

It was a pretty slow week, especially for someone who doesn't read Cap, DC's Return of the Countdown to Super-Infinite Crisis, or the lesser X-Whoevers. I only picked up three books, which allowed more time to reread Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's Dark Victory in anticipation of The Dark Knight (review forthcoming).

Joker's Asylum: Poison Ivy, #1 (DC)

Writer: JT Krul Art & Cover: Guillem March

[caption id="attachment_8" align="alignright" width="197" caption="Joker's Asylum: Poison Ivy, #1 Cover by Guillem March"][/caption]

The latest in DC's recently-launched "Joker's Asylum" weekly, in which the Joker delves into the backstories of Batman's rogues gallery, brings hyper-sexualized eco-terrorist Poison Ivy to the fore (bearing the cringe-inducing title Poison Ivy in "Deflowered"). In my experience, Ivy has always come across as one of the Dark Knight's most underdeveloped villains. "Joker's Asylum: Poison Ivy" does little to remedy this.

After a brief (single page) origin refresher course, this one-shot has Ivy acting, as ever, on behalf of Mother Gaia or whatever motivating quasi-spiritual singularity, eliminating a trio of "human" (read: greedy, unfeeling, environmentally insensitive) land-developers guilty of clearing out one of Gotham's outlying forests in order to erect tracts of luxury homes. To this end, she employs her usual earth-friendly arsenal - strangling people with vines, seducing and paralyzing them with venomous lipstick, &c. Her M.O. is painfully obvious, and it takes Bats about six minutes to put all the pieces together.

It's boilerplate Poison Ivy. She's sexy (as March's hairpin curves and discretely placed laurel leaves point out), she has some sort of vaguely-delineated Eve complex and, yeah, she can control plants and trees and vines and all that. Ivy's brand of extremist ecological zeal may have a place in comics, present global circumstances being what they are, but unfortunately, the tendency for Batman's villains to be written off as insane ideological absolutists destined for Arkham's padded walls results in any resonance to Ivy's advocacy being similarly shrugged off as the ramblings of a tree-hugging looney.

The Incredible Hercules, #119 (Marvel)

Writers: Greg Pak & Fred Van Lente Pencils: Rafa Sandoval

[caption id="attachment_10" align="alignleft" width="197" caption="The Incredible Hercules #119, Cover by Romita, Janson & White"][/caption]

Word from the bandwagon is that Greg Pak's "The Incredible Hercules" is one of the best Marvel titles being published. Hype notwithstanding, #119 (part three of the series' tie-in to Marvel's Secret Invasion "event") secures Herc's place alongside "Invincible Iron Man" as probably the most consistently entertaining (non-Avengers) Marvel book gracing the racks nowadays.

Issue 119 continues the quest of the God Sqaud-Ajak the Eternal, the Egyptian deity Atum, the Japanese god of evil Mikaboshi, Snowbird (daughter of the Inuit goddess Nirvana and former Alpha Flight member), Hercules and the mortal boy genius Amadeus Cho (with, of course, "his pup in-tow")-as they invade the domain of the Skrull gods, destroy them, and thusly take the wind out the sails of the Skrull forced invading Earth. Developing the reveal in the previous issue, the Squad learns that Cho's dog, Kirby, is a shape-shifting Skrull agent, sent to jeopardize the quest into the pantheon of alien gods.

The book works not only because the mission of the God Squad reeks of all the stuff that makes superhero comics worthwhile in the first place (ie. immortals beating the divine snot out of each other for Universal supremacy), but because the whole "Who Do You Trust?" tagline of the Secret Invasion series works particularly well amongst the unlikely alliance of gods, many of whom have millennia-old quarry with one another. Herc's development as a group leader who must learn to employ more than his Olympian strength to get out of a tight spot continues, though his "I punch stuff, it falls down!" ethos by-and-large trumps any sophisticated tactical engagement.

Sandoval's pencils continue to impress. His ability to render a chaotic scrum between the God Squad and a cavalcade of lesser alien gods is clean and comprehensible, expanding upon the SMASH-centered action of "The Incredible Hulk" series which Herc usurped. A great read, especially for mythology and folklore nerds who have grown tired with the of Asgard.

The Mighty Avengers, #16 (Marvel)

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Pencils: Khoi Pham

[caption id="attachment_13" align="alignright" width="197" caption="The Mighty Avengers #16 Cover by Aleski Briclot"][/caption]

Despite the assortment of C and D-list Marvel heroes who make up the team, and the fact that they by-and-large tow the pro-registration company line in the wake of the Civil War event, "The Mighty Avengers" is currently one of my favorite Marvel titles. The recent Secret Invasion tie-ins have been especially compelling (often moreso than the standalone mini-series). Both the tie-ins and "The Mighty Avengers" series as a whole afford readers an opportunity to explore the histories and motivations of some of the Marvel's more neglected heroes (Miss Marvel, Wonder Man, Giant Man, Ares, &c.) and to understand how these characters figure into the larger goings-on in the Marvel Universe.

The latest Mighty Avengers issue continues this trend, this time focusing on Elektra, the first person revealed as a Skrull way back in "New Avengers Illuminati."* The story sees Daredevil's oft-enemy/oft-ally as battling the Skrull agents sent to kill her and assume her form. Some of the martial arts action is pretty good-with Elektra taking on Skrulls assuming the form of Wolverine, Daredevil, Ghost Rider and herself, but where are the Mighty Avengers in all this?

It's great the Bendis is using both "Mighty" and "New Avengers" titles to flesh out the story behind the scenes of Secret Invasion, but this story is better suited to a one-shot than an Avengers book. With Hank Pym, Tony Stark, Jessica Drew, Jarvis and who-knows-who-else closely implicated with Secret Invasion and the larger arcs of "The Mighty Avengers," resorting to an Elektra story seems a bit disappointing. Its not that the book wasn't an enjoyable read. It's just that, well, at the end of the day Elektra, Electro, and the Hand just don't do it for me.

*Nb. Speaking of that "Illuminati" run, what is Dr. Strange up to during the Secret Invasion? Doesn't this seem like the kind of thing he should just be stopping by snapping his fingers?

Det är däremot inte The Only Game in Town.

Okay, I'm late to the game on this by two years but hey, I've been busy. It is the night before the Dark Night and feeling sorry for myself that I will not be able to see it in the theaters until sometime in the next couple of weeks. With that, I was in the mood for some type of superhero action movie. The best thing I can say about Ghost Rider is that I enjoyed the pint of Ben & Jerry's Stephen Cobert Americone Ice Cream.

Marvel's B-grade heroes on the big screen are really B-grade. When I compare the DC movie franchise versus Marvel, Marvel is ahead on the count but this doesn't always mean the quality is there. Growing up, Ghost Rider was never one of the comics I read. I never had any interest as a character and watching the movie, it is like watching Spawn before Spawn ever came out.

Getting down to some details of my review. Nicolas Cage is a much better actor than the material but it's apparent how much energy he puts in to the Ghost Rider role. Stepping back a bit, having listen to Kevin Smith's Evening With...dvd, he tells the story of his experience writing a Superman screenplay. At that time, Nicolas was up for the role of Superman. Looking at Nic's Rider performance, I could see him playing Clark Kent but as Superman, he doesn't have the classic all american handsome facial features. Luckily, Superman Returns was done properly with Brandon Routh.

Eva Mendes role was as strong and important as Kristen Dunst's Mary Jane Watson in Spiderman 3, yawn. While she is great to look at, her acting and presence is really not up to snuff. I really expected Eva to be the next Rosario Dawson, who I am truly a big fan of, but we shall see if her upcoming role in The Spirit will prove acting abilities.

Lastly, I looked at the name of the director Mark Steven Johnson in the credits. I knew the name sounded familiar and then confirmed it on IMDB as the director for Daredevil. I know a great deal of people dismissed Ben Affleck's take on Daredevil and the miscast of King Pin by Michael Clarke Duncan. I must have been one of the few that like the movie to buy the director's cut of Daredevil.

Unfortunately, the Rider movie just didn't come together and with a baddie like Blackheart to fight against the Ghost Rider even the climax really was a let down. Another thing that ticked me off was Blackheart's entourage mirrored a similiar crew of baddies in the Elektra movie which he also wrote. In that movie, there is one character, sorry I forgot the name, where he was balancing a coin on his finger. When Elektra fought against the Order of the Hand, I don't remember seeing the character again. Going back to the Blackheart's minions, they were just as ineffective.

On the whole, the only reason why you should see it is the same reason why you would watch the first Hulk movie with Eric Bana. You want to see the fx of Ghost Rider which are great but that's it. I'm glad to have finally seen it but thank god I was able to rent this from the library for free.

Wow, that really took a turn for the macabre in a hurry.

Birds Of Prey #120

I'd anticipated the post Simone Birds to suck, but that hasn't been the case. Definite negative points for "silicon syndicate" and "Macintech" though. Those names were already lame when they started publishing Wired Magazine.

Captain America #40

Brubaker is writing half the Marvel U, and Epting is probalby in pre-production on his next job. Even so, both the art and the story seem a little rushed on this one. This story is really done in about four pages, with some stylish George Lucas style wipe fades between A story and B story.

As I stumble across the world wide web, I constantly run into mentions of Manga, Anime and such. Apparently there are a number of Naruto fans out there.

I am partial to Japanese anime when they involve mysterious powers, battles between good and evil, and ambivalent character or two who might be a good guy and might not.

The Japanese seem to churn out this watchable stuff while all I see coming out here is crap like Ed, Ed and Eddy. And which one of you Chowder Heads, ordered Chowder, or Flap Jack. Mostly unwatchable crap. Even that imaginary friends show got old after awhile.

Compare that to say The Avatar or that Samuari Jack show.

How is it there is so much schlock here and so many Gems coming out of Japan. They seem to be willing to spend the money to attract and depict interesting myths and legends.

American cartoons and kids shows appear to be about stupidity. Appearing stupid, learning to be stupid, living with stupid people. Only occasionally do the makers of children's fare here forget to be stupid and turn out something not half bad like that cute teenage witch show or Ben 10. Sponge Bob and the Fairy God parents aren't that bad.

Come to think of it though, the genesis for these rambling musings, Naruto is a first class, grade A idiot. Nevertheless, the show is interesting. It depicts a alternate universe and peoples it with interesting characters.

I don't know if characters or the world on Ed, Ed an Eddy are interesting because the drawing is just too annoying to watch. What dialogue I have heard on that show before managing to change the channel was imbecilic. There is a concept called the pathetic fallacy. If you want to show people a character in a story is bored, you don't do it by making the audience fall asleep. The people who made Naruto know this. The makers of Ed,Ed and Eddy do not.

When they do make good American cartoons like the Dark Knight Batman, or Superman or anything backed by DC or Marvel comics, they are too short lived. and we must subsist on a meager ration of reruns.

In similar fashion XBox Live has also stated that the original episodes of Battlestar Galactica (1978) have been available as well as well as the more recent Sci-Fi channel re-imagining of the series currently filming its final season. The newer series is said to be available in both SD and HD flavors. It is unclear if the dreaded Galactica 1980 is or weill be made available. One can only assume the final season will be made available as well at a future date and the one-shot movie: Razor which featured the crew and adventures of the Battlestar Pegasus.

A Tropa Nova é extinta.

Enfim, a Marvel ousou e criou algo maior e lógico.

Peter Parker is swinging back into the muliplex—but not for a while.

“Spider-Man” producer Laura Ziskin said the fourth installment in the web-slinging superhero series is tentatively scheduled to arrive in May 2011.

In remarks Thursday to theater owners from California and Nevada, Ziskin said there was no finished screenplay, but that she and Sony Pictures were hopeful “Spider-Man 4” could be ready in three years’ time.

The first three movies comprise one of the most successful franchises in modern Hollywood history, grossing a combined $2.5 billion worldwide. Neither star Tobey Maguire nor director Sam Raimi is yet committed to work on the next installment. But Sony has paid Marvel to renew its rights.

What’s the exact opposite of catching The Dark Knight on IMAX this weekend? Watching a Batman

What's the exact opposite of catching The Dark Knight on IMAX this weekend? Watching a Batman action figure argue with the Incredible Hulk over who has the most tragic backstory. But by operating outside the law to get the job of superhero mockery done, and admired by the public as a result, the Marvel/DC shorts are actually emulating the film's hero.

Taking advantage of the template established by the Errol Morris-inspired Get a Mac ads (originally directed by Junebug helmer Phil Morrison), YouTube user ItsJustSomeRandomGuy (real name Michael Agrusso) uses the incredibly goofy medium of talking action figures to poke fun at the summer's biggest blockbusters -- from Iron Man to The Incredible Hulk to Hellboy to The Dark Knight.

Agrusso (who does all the voices himself) made the first Marvel/DC video, in which Spider-man ribs Superman for DC's stalled superhero projects, as a funny gag for his girlfriend (who also assists with the shorts). But the witty series, with its built-in appeal for comic book nerds, quickly built a fan base that led to 43 subsequent videos and a featured position on the Marvel web site.

Existing in a quasi-fictional world where each character represents the actual hero being depicted, but is conscious of his/her own nature as the star of a major motion picture franchise (I bet you thought you were just going to read about funny superhero videos when you opened this piece, huh?), Iron Man, Batman and others seem hard-pressed to get along. What's so engaging about these shorts is that they're not just poking fun at dudes in tights -- Marvel/DC, in its pure nerd-debate form, has a sharp, critical voice, while also touching upon real issues concerning the comic book industry and the adaptation process.

Hi, I'm a Marvel...and I'm a DC...and I'm Hellboy, for example, emphasizes the unique nature of Hellboy's ownership: Creator Mike Mignola retains the rights, which sets the franchise apart in an increasingly corporate world. And the latest string of Iron Man vs. Batman debates focuses on which of the two films is more family-friendly. "Your film just screams out for a Happy Meal tie-in -- hey kids, which horribly disfigured psychopath is your favorite? Collect all three and get a free straightjacket!" Iron Man tells Batman, just after Batman cites Tony Stark's pole-dancing stewardesses as a sign that maybe neither franchise is right for the PG set. It's the sort of commentary that truly captures the evolution of the superhero zeitgeist in American film.

The Marvel/DC shorts occupy an awkward place, copyright-wise: ridiculously popular, but completely impossible for Agrusso to profit from due to the gross amounts of corporate-owned trademarks with which he's playing. But so far he's managed not to get sued, and hopefully the corporations involved will allow that trend to continue. Because this is the voice of Marvel and DC's audience: smart, funny, and nerdy as hell.
