But for some reason whenever I click a notification link I get in my webmail for something at Last.fm - say, someone sends me a message there, or requests to be a contact - it always assumes I'm in Brazil and loads the www.lastfm.com.br version of whatever page I'm after.

I have no idea why this happens. The link in my email is definitely a www.last.fm one. But something - either my Hotmail, my Firefox browser, or the last.fm site - thinks I need to be redirected to Brazil.

Ideas?

Enough about that for now. Let's talk music. The quote in the title is from the song Acid Food by Mogwai. It's on an album called Mr. Beast, which I've listened to a lot lately. I quote last.fm:

Mogwai is a rock band from Glasgow formed in 1995 that have become one of the most influential and best known bands in their genre. They compose lengthy, mostly instrumental guitar-based pieces in the style of post-rock, usually focused around the elaboration of a single theme, and are known traditionally for their quiet/loud dynamic, defined bass riffs, and an eminent ambient sound, sometimes dark and sometimes grand. Some of you might've guessed that Opeth was on top already, as they're in my header. Opeth defines good music for me. For those of you who don't know, Opeth is a progressive death metal band from Sweden. But don't be scared by the death metal label if you like softer music. The thing about Opeth is that they include mellow passages in most of their songs, and they even have a full lenght album with only mellow songs (Damnation, check it out).

Esta tercera semana de la lista Déjà Vu, aparte de los temas más escuchados en mi página de LastFM, comenzaré a incluir el Top de artistas, con el número de escuchas esa semana.

Esta semana en el número #1 tenemos un clásico de 1972 a cargo de mr. Neil Young, Out on the weekend, tema con el que abre su álbum Harvest. Com, que encara no coneixeu què és last.fm? Doncs cliqueu aquí que us fan cinc cèntims de què és last.fm (en castellà, jo faig servir la versió anglesa, no per esnobisme, sinó perquè moltes biografies d'artistes "raros" no estan disponibles en castellà...).

P.S. Tenint en compte que Carlos Berlanga va ser el compositor principal de Dinarama i de Pegamoides, ja sabeu quin és el meu gran mite musical a part de Morrissey. Suposo que el dia que Morrissey mori sentiré la mateixa tristor que aquell juny de 2002 en què ens deixava, tan jove, Carlos Berlanga. Per cert, quan faig servir l'adjectiu "berlanguià" al blog em refereixo sempre al Carlos García Berlanga fill, el músic, no al pare, Luis García Berlanga, que és el famós director de cine!

Baixei o EP novo do Minus the bear, banda relativamente nova de Seatle. Ok, nada nova, tem quase 10 anos, mas o novo, no caso, refere-se ao fato de não ser daquela safra grunge do começo dos 90 (como disse meu amigo Hulky agora há pouco: Seatle não foi destruída em 94?)

O EP chama-se Acoustics e como o nome sugere, são versões acústicas de músicas da banda (mas tem uma faixa inédita!) e já rodou bastante no iTunes aqui, como vocês podem conferir ali no link do Lastfm. Eu já adorava o Planet of Ice, de 2007 e fiquei curiosa para saber o que eles fariam com todas aquelas guitarrinhas e bateras marcantes no acústico, mas me encantei com o resultado, ficou interessante, sem ser manjado ou muito parecido com o original.

Falando em Lastfm: alguém sabe como coloco a listinha em imagem aqui no blog? Procurei lá, mas só achei atalhos para blogspot...

Myspace is almost the synonym of social networks. Sure there were those that came before it, but Myspace was able to bring it to the masses, en masse. I joined myspace on March 12, 2005, not that long ago I guess. I've watched as it has gone through all its various face lifts and other cosmetic changes. I remember when you could only have eight photos, instead of three-hundred. I used to use myspace a lot, mostly to keep in touch with old high school buddies, but I've been drifting away from it recently. I've been using it less and less and find myself checking it more infrequently with each passing week. It's gotten a little too, hmmm, flashy(?), a little too hip hop, just not my style anymore. Besides, over time I talk with old friends less and less and it's a sad symptom of the fact that my use of myspace is decreasing.

Facebook was billed as the grown up alternative to Myspace. It has since become just as much a cesspool for internet denzions as myspace. It's tried so hard to not become myspace, that it has actually become almost a mirror of it. What with the new annoying applications both have, the constant updating of every single aspect of everyone's profile force fed right to you, are just two of many reasons both sites are catering to the younger audiences, despite what they may have originally sought to do. I never really got into facebook too deeply mostly because I found their interface to be confusing, and I was so used to myspace that I generally stuck with them. Nowadays I don't use either a whole lot.

I love last.fm. I've been using it since February 5, 2005 and have played over 30,000 tracks since signing up. For those of you who aren't familiar with this service, what last.fm does is it keeps track of what you listen to via a plugin for your favorite music player (for use on computers only, not portable media devices, obviously). I really love all the charts and graphs, which make it easy to see what you listen to and how much you listen to what. Along with this, last.fm has an extremely broad user base, all listening to everything under the sun. Makes it easy to find new music interests. I would definitely recommend last.fm. I'm still partial to its original name, Audioscrobbler.

I've been with DeviantART since March 19, 2005. It's a place for art. The community there is really great. Pretty much any kind of art you're interested in, you can find someone else who shares your interest (if not hundreds), and are happy to share their tips and tricks of the trade. I always have fun when I'm browsing deviations, wether it be critiquing a serious submission, or joking around with someone about their MSPaint drawing. Artists unite, this is DeviantART.

Rules 1 and 2 prevent me from talking about this particular site, but make no mistake, this one has quite a presence.

I've been using GameFAQs since Sunday, November 13, 2005 at 10:50 PM, well this is the creation date for my earliest account anyway. This is a great place to post on the internet in forum type discussion. Obviously, since the name gives it away, the slant is toward video games, but there are enough boards to cover just about every interest, even a board for graphing calculators. I post whenever I can, mostly for a laugh, but sometimes it's serious business, just like the internet. But at the end of the day, it's L-block all the way. Also the cake is a lie. Also no one ever expects jinjo. Also moderators.

A recent addition to my internet repertoire. Not unwelcome at that either. This is sort of an outlet, as I'm sure it is for most people, to quip about whatever they're doing. As far as usefulness, it's pretty far down on the scale, but it can be fun nonetheless. But it leads me into the next item which is...

Kinda looks like the Volkswagen logo... Anyway, this is Wordpress, it's what you're reading right now! I've actually been looking for a place for SuperJanitor to live since Myspace was getting stale, and Facebook is not malleable enough for me. Enter Wordpress. I've actually taken a liking to this, and the idea of it all. I had a blog once before, which was basically for me to chronicle all the stories and experiences I had working at a Subway a while ago, it was pretty off color and not quite as refined as this has the potential to be. I'm enjoying my stay and it will be interesting to see what I end up doing with it once I don't have to update it for a grade. I think I'll keep up with it because I always feel like I have a need to write down what's going on in my life, for whatever reason. It's also a good tool to chronicle just about anything, progress, life, progress of life.

I never post comments on YouTube. The comments on YouTube are generally regarded as the absolute worst the internet has to offer, but the videos are what people really go there for, right? Well I do anyway. YouTube along with Google basically have the market cornered when it comes to video on the internet. So much so that YouTube has almost become synonymous with any video online. Everyone uses YouTube.

While I don't directly participate in any of the conversation that goes on on this site, I read it religiously. This is about as smart a discourse that I can get without the subjects going totally beyond my comprehension level. It's news for nerds, stuff that matters. Their polls are also always entertaining.

Car Talk is a radio talk show about cars, hosted by Tom and Ray. I've been listening to this show for years, and while not a social network that I personally take advantage of, there are a multitude of people out there who do. Their website offers a lot in the way of car advice, and their weekly radio show never disappoints. So I waste another perfectly good hour listening to Car Talk once a week.

Initially after setting up Mandriva, I was using the fabulous Amarok media player to listen to my LastFM streams, but I just didn't have the flexibility that I have with the official last.fm player. I checked the repositories, and sure enough, Mandriva had the official player packaged.

The official player is really nice, and very KDE centric since it's written in QT4, but one thing bugs the devil out of me - I hate the System Tray icon - it looks like something "bad". Even though I know what it is, when it catches my eye, I think I need to install an update, or I've got an error of some kind.

Last.FM developers - can't you come up with something friendlier?

This could be because I'm getting used to a new distro, and everything catches my eye, but this looks like something important that is trying to get my attention, not a media player chillin' out playing some tunes!

Certo dia o vocalista da Ampdrive me mandou um scrap no Orkut como propaganda, dizendo para eu ver o novo clipe que sua banda gravou. Eu nunca tinha ouvido falar, e como gosto de música e verifiquei que era um link seguro do Youtube, cliquei para ver. De primeira já começei a gostar da música (Olhos nos Olhos), depois de ver o clipe eu baixei a música e achei bem legal. Só é uma pena eu responder o scrap/propaganda elogiando a banda e até Hoje não ter nenhuma resposta.

Então depois eu entrei no site e conheci outras músicas da banda, como "O Melhor Lugar do Mundo" e "Invisível". Recomendo aos que gostem de pop/rock nacional que conhecam essa banda.

Men idag satte jag på playlisten som är baserad på mitt bibliotek - med andra ord på vad jag har lyssnat på de senaste tre åren. Det var, i dubbel bemärkelse, oväntat trevligt. Den kontrollerade slumpen spottar ur sig sånt som man nästan hade glömt att det någonsin existerade - som Le Sports "Your Brother Is My Only Hope" - eller bara sånt man aldrig skulle få för sig att stoppa in i en playlist på egen hand. "Maybe I'm Amazed". "The Magnificent Seven". Eller nåt med Shogu Tokumaru. Honom hade jag också glömt.

Att katalogisera sin tillvaro (och i förlängningen sitt förflutna) verkar på ytan vara något för nördar och kontrollfreaks, men med rätt matte i botten är databaser inte bara mer pålitliga än det mänskliga minnet - de är dessutom mer oberäkneliga.

I know that this is going to sound odd coming from a 23 year old, but lately I have been feeling old - not in the sense of number of years since I was born, but in the sense of maturity. A couple of years ago, a friend a bit older than me was trying to tell me how big the difference in our lives was, because I was still in school and she had been working in a full-time job for a few months. I could see where she was coming from, but still didn't see it as much of a big deal. However, lately I have can see exactly where she was coming from. A year ago, I had to start worrying about stuff like taxes, the economy, retirement, politics, and such. I guess to a small extent I always had to worry about it, but not like now.

On top of that, I just got my first invitation to a friend's wedding. A whole bunch of friends and acquaintances my age are getting engaged and married. I am happy for all of them, but I really can't believe how many of them there are. Here I am feeling old because of the new stage in life I am in, but I feel like I am nowhere near the point in my life to be talking about marriage. Maybe these are two different stages and can't be compared, but I guess only time will tell.

Other than this feeling old/mature stuff, San Francisco is going great. While I do miss Chicago very much, I am still liking it out here! Also, have fun with winter coming up :P. One amazing thing about San Francisco is the variety of stores, restaurants, etc over such a small geographical area. Outside of downtown, chains are pretty rare (except Walgreen's). This week, I also went to a meeting at a place called Noise Bridge, which is a building and group of people who get together to work on tech projects and such. I plan on getting more involved with them over the next few weeks.

Riverbed has also been great, I have been learning a great deal here - both technical and professional. As you can tell with the previous posts, I have been working a lot with Virtualization Technology. It seems like server technology is making a rapid change right now. On one hand, you have virtualization which allows you consolidate multiple servers and services onto fewer physical machines. On the other hand, you have large scale applications which require multiple servers (or even multiple data centers of servers). Either way, the one server per service architecture is out the window.

To wrap it up, I will leave you with a few unrelated sentences. I just bought the new Rise Against album. I will be in Chicago October 24th and 25th. The White Sox did slightly better than the Cubs in the post season. I am DJ Over Zero. I am now a Last.fm subscriber.

Mufin analiza hasta 40 características de cada canción, pero no explica porqué una canción es parecida a otra como sí hacía Pandora (y supongo que seguirá haciendo en EEUU) De todas formas, cuando funciona, lo hace muy bien y te permite escuchar canciones interesantes.

En conclusión, Mufin recoge la filosofía de Pandora, Last.fm y otras radios de encontrar música que te guste y no conozcas, incluso se pone el reto de no sólo buscar por grupos o estilos (como hace Last.fm) sino también por canciones como hacía Pandora (que a mí, supongo que lo habéis notado) me encantaba. Sin embargo algunos defectos la hacen poco atractiva, no sólo los errores en la repetición de canciones o que no encuentre similitudes a veces (más que la misma canción, pero esono vale :D) sino, sobre todo, el hecho de que no se pueda escuchar la canción completa. De todas formas hay que darle tiempo al proyecto para que madure ya que aún está en fase Beta (y no como Tuenti que me pregunto cuando dejará de estar en fase beta), así que aún puede mejorar. Last.FM 是一個網路上聽歌的服務. 依照個人喜愛的歌手作為資料的依據, 找尋大家分享的音樂以外, 也能找類似的曲風與歌手. 他會自動的把歌曲都放在一堆一個個的播放, 就像廣播電台, 只差沒廣告而已!

這個軟體與 Pandora 相似, 是有網路版的! 因此你可以用電腦的瀏覽器聽歌不需要開 iphone. 不過當你在路上時 Iphone Last.FM 就變成相當的方便!

音質還算不錯! 並且可以多國語系, 聽日文歌, 中文歌, 英文歌都不會有問題! 不過早期一開始的版本相當不穩定並且有時不會有聲音. 不過新版的就相當 OK.

缺點 : 有時無法跳歌! 並且不像 Pandora 一般, 若選擇了喜歡此歌之後, 播放機率會變高.

I've deleted my Last.FM page. Permanently. Wiped it cleand. Deleted all of the plays. Every single song out of my 70,000+ profile. More than three years of my listening at the computer.

Every Sunday Last.FM updated my page with my "Most Played" songs and "Most Played" artists for the week. The new software release even allowed me to scrobble plays from my iPod. No longer was I bound to the computer, I could share what I listened to at work and more!

So why did I erase my profile? The very reason I frequented the site and even logged into my account while using friend's computers. I was obsessed. Completely. In writing this article I wanted to do two things: put into writing how music became joyless as a reminder to myself, and to seek some companionship in the form of a support group.

Yes, it's that bad. Yes, it's also that silly. And probably very hard to understand if you aren’t a Last.FM user yourself. But I honestly want to know if there are people out there like me! I can't have been the only person to have descended into a kind of dark obsession, creating a myriad of rules and regulations for my favorite pastime.

What are the symptoms of Last.FM addiction? There may be more. I am breaking ground here, and I fully expect to be cited in the next DSM. All I can do is provide my own symptoms, as they gradually set in over years of use.

- Avoidance of long songs in favor of short ones. The more scrobbled, the merrier, right? Except grind bands with 30 second songs are cheating. That doesn’t count. So it looks something like this: Malevolent Creation > Opeth as well as Nasum.

- Only listen to full albums! Too many scattered songs and your Last.FM weekly roll call will be a mess of 4 or 5 play-count bands.

- Once you get on a roll with a band, you start to play that band's music more often simply to boost their stats for the week, not because you want to hear them more.

- Competing against yourself. Watching your top bands struggle for the top spot.

- Competing against others. Don’t let their total number of plays beat yours!

- Avoiding listening to music when it won't be scrobbled.

All of these were stupid rules that very slowly grasped the love of my life and throttled the fun out of it, until it was a stiff act that was done for something other than myself. In my mind, music is a personal thing. Last.FM embodies the polar opposite of that. There may be some of you who can listen to what you want, when you want, consequences-be-damned. But if my extensive music collection says anything, it's that I have a tendency to become obsessed.

Deleting Last.FM may be a wise legal move as well. For those of you with illegal mp3s, scrobbling them probably isn't a great idea. Last.FM is owned by CBS, after all. So after you download that new album leak from a torrent, think twice about scrobbling it. What a convenient way for a label to find people who obtained an illegal leak of an album. You could file this under paranoia if you want, but keep in mind a mother was recently ordered a more than $200,00 fine for making 16 Opeth songs available for download. Yes, it was on Limewire, but don't think that the RIAA is unaware of "mp3 blogs" and Last.FM.

So, RIP Last.FM. I'm already thinking about making another one, but I am also enjoying my new found freedom. Leave a comment if you've experienced the addiction or if you think I'm an oddball. Or both.

Whether or not cuddly-looking, iPod-shaped bears are your thing, Portland's Podington Bear puts out some incredible instrumental music.  Think a synth-driven Ratatat with more melody than metal sensibility, a less depressing Album Leaf, or the polished electro-pop that Dntel layered beneath Ben Gibbard's vocals on the Postal Service's "Give Up."

HUSH Records also offers the official Podington Bear box set, a limited edition 10-CD collection of 135 songs Podington Bear released via Podcast.

The man behind the amazingly productive Podington Bear is none other than HUSH Records founder himself, Chad Crouch.  Crouch began recording anonymously as Podington at the beginning of 2007 with the ambitious goal of releasing three songs a week on his Podcast, but had to draw the project out an extra six months to reach his goal of 156 songs.

According to the Podington Bear blog, Crouch didn't reveal his identity until he accidentally released a Podington CD that listed his name when the CDDB Database retrieved the disc information as listeners ripped the album into their iTunes libraries.

"It was a research and development experiment for the business of music unfettered from the history and business model of HUSH Records," Crouch wrote about the long-running secrecy of his identity in relation to the project. "Adaptation requires experimentation."
