As if we didn't know already, Microsoft has officially announced price cuts for all Xbox 360 SKUs. Multiple retailer fliers were photographed and posted on the web before they were supposed to be shown. All rumors were true, and the Xbox 360 is now the cheapest gaming console available. The Arcade unit is now $199.99, the Pro (60 GB) is $299.99, and the Elite is $399.99. Another important piece of information, the stand-alone 360 Hard Drive will also have a slashed price. You can buy a 120 GB Hard Drive for $149.99, a $30 decrease. If you want, buy an Arcade and a 120 GB HDD for approximately $50 less than the cost of the Elite.

Keeping an eye on calories may seem a tad obsessive, however, it's more common sense to be honest. Don't go over the daily allowance, and try to balance crap foods with healthy foods. I am no longer buying multipacks of 2 finger kitkats. As much as I like to have them, I like them too much. Going through six in a day at 107 calories each certainly isn't "the way to go". So they won't be on the next shopping run. I am getting used to this internet shopping lark, well for food shopping that is. Buying any other goods online I pretty much have in the bag. The problem I noticed with internet food shopping, is that once presented with my "favourites list", I have little motivation to go browisng for other things, and often forget things I needed, or end up with the same all the time.

At the moment, it's not much of a problem. I buy things to make into meals, and try to substitute my cravings for chocolate with fruit. That's a real hit, however I find myself eating a lot of fruit to make up for not having chocolate snacks. Oh well, there's no such thing as too much of a good thing, surely? :)

I like this new reform I have in the way I eat, and my exercise levels are up too - I walk to and from work every day. That amounts to 4 miles a day; about an hour's worth of brisk walking. I walk quite fast, averaging about 4.5-5 miles an hour most days (My phone has a sports application. I used it a couple of times to measure my speeds with the GPS)

In other news, I went to the doctor's today about a chest pain I had. Turned out it was nothing - no way near as serious as I was expecting, and probably muscular. I think a came down with one of those temporary bugs too - No idea if they were related, however, I seem to have a kickass immune system, because these things usually fade fast. This one has, anyway.

The last time I went to the doctors' before today, was 6 or 7 years ago. I did have to make an emergency visit about a couple of years ago, but I don't count that, because it was hayfever related, and I just needed some eyedrops to calm down my eyes that summer.

In unrelated news, I received SPORE through the mail today. I can't play it though, because I am still waiting for my RMA'd (returned) hard drive to be replaced. eBuyer sent it out today at about 7pm. I sent it to them last Saturday. I hate waiting this long, for something that seems like it could be done so simply and quickly. Anyway, from what I see and hear about SPORE, it looks great and plays great too. I watched the "Making of..." DVD and "How to build a better being" National Geographic featurette DVD. I bought the Galactic Edition of SPORE. Basically, it's like an extended edition dvd box, but for PC games. I read through the art book that came with it too. That was an interesting read, and gave a look at how the designers of the game go through various stages of development.

I plan to do more updates like this in the future. I'll most likely keep them to Friday End of Week updates, but may make mid-week or beginning of week updates instead, or as well. Dunno, let's see how it goes.

When you first pop-in your Windows disk, the operating system will prompt these choices for you to choose from. Here are the format options:

• Format the partition by using the NTFS file system (Quick)
• Format the partition by using the FAT file system (Quick)
• Format the partition by using the NTFS file system
• Format the partition by using the FAT file system

When you choose to run a Full format on a volume, files are removed from the volume that you are formatting and the hard disk is scanned for bad sectors. The scan for bad sectors is the reason why the Full format takes twice as long as the Quick format.

If you choose the Quick format option, the format removes files from the partition, but does not scan the disk for bad sectors. This option is best when your hard disk has been previously formatted and you are sure that your hard disk is not damaged nor has bad sectors. This can be a problem later because bad sectors that are not located can cause damage to the hard drive. For example, if data is later installed on this "bad sector", the data will read errors or as corrupted files.

In simple terms, a Full format will truly scrub through the hard drive from scratch, rebuild all of its file structures, and scans the drive to make sure that everything is on a satisfactory level. On the other hand, what a Quick format does is lay down a blank FAT and directory table without checking for bad sectors.

This is why when you buy a brand-new unformatted hard drive, you cannot give it a Quick format. The drive needs a Full Format because it needs the entire file structures set-up, so the FAT actually has blocks and sectors to track, rather than a chaotic mess. However, like we mention earlier, if your hard drive is already has a clean slate and has no bad sectors, a Quick format will be suitable.

Also, If you installed Windows on a partition that was formatted by using the Quick format option, you can check your hard drive by using the chkdsk /r command after the installation of Windows is completed.

What do I mean?  It is simple mathematics, and all boils down to the fact that computers are binary, and humans are decimal.

We are used to thinking of things in factors of 10, so how (marketing) applied it to IT is:

1kB is 1000 bytes

1MB is 1000kB

1GB is 1000MB

1TB is 1000GB

Nice and simple, so when you buy a 500GB drive, or a 1TB drive or whatever, you can easily figure out that 2x500GB drives is about the same as 1TB drive, or 5x100GB drives etc.  (This is not taking into account the amount that is actually lost during the formatting of the drive, where a 500GB drive can actually only hold about 430GB of information).  The problem is there is a fundamental error here, which is multiplying with each generation of device, and unit size.

So let's look at what there really is as far as the computer is concerned, and see just how much difference it is making these days (and this started around the time of 100MB harddrives, so the error is getting pretty large!)

1 bit of information is a 1 or a 0

1byte is 8 bits (such as 0100 0001, which is the letter A)

Now, a little diversion - instead of writing lines and lines of code as 0100 1001 0001 1101 etc, it is much easier converting it to base 16, or hexadecimal.

So 1001 1101 is written as 9D

(Counting in Hexadecimal goes like: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F, 10, 11 and so on)

FF is 1111 1111, or 255 in decimal. So one more is 100 in hex, 1 0000 0000 in binary, or 256 in decimal.

Now we start to see why RAM (for example) increases in multiples of 256, so historically, computers had 4K RAM, then 8, then 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024.  If you've been around computers for a while, these numbers start becoming strangely familiar.  It is all powers of 2: 2x10^2, 2X10^3 etc

Back to our topic.  The last number, 1024 is especially relevant to our conversation.

Because 1kB is actually 1024 bytes

1MB is 1024 kB

1GB is 1024MB

1TB is 1024GB

Doesn't seem like a lot of difference from what the marketing guys did, but the error is compounding, and it is in favour of the marketers, not the consumer.  In other words, a 1TB drive actually can hold significantly less than an actual 1TB of data.  Yes I know they put the disclaimer in the small print (that 1TB represents 1000GB), but the error has been compounding since MB days so even 1000GB is a lot less than it actually is as far as the computer is concerned.

So let's think of it a different way.

An A4 page full of writing can hold approximately 2750 A's (I just worked it out in Word, so there are margins, font sizes etc all at play here, but let's just take this as an average).

So, 1 page represents 2750 bytes

Putting this side by side with the marketing averaging:

Now I don't know about you, but telling me that a drive is 1TB in size which can hold 36 million pages of A4 text less than a drive that actually measured a real 1TB is just wrong, no matter how much fine print there is.  Or in other words, it is 92GB smaller than it appears.  Which is about as much information that is on 2 complete floors of the average library.

When we get to the next generation, and we get our first Petabyte drive (1PB), this compounding error will cost us something like 90TB.  The printed collection of the US Library of Congress holds approximately 10TB.

Now you can see why I get annoyed when marketing is allowed to play with IT specifications!

El problema fue que cuando quise reiniciar el sistema no cargaba Ubuntu y tampoco me dejaba iniciar el liveCD, aparecía la pantalla de carga y luego se reiniciaba. Este ultimo error se debió a la tarjeta madre, ya que cambie el disco duro a otra PC y ahora si cargo Ubuntu en modo de recuperación.

Así que aquí les pongo los pasos a seguir para cuando tu Ubuntu (o cualquier Linux) no inicie correctamente o no reconozca bien todas las particiones:

1. Si el sistema no inicia ni siquiera en modo texto (CLI) arranca desde un LiveCD (el de instalación de Ubuntu puede servir)
2. Si no inicia tampoco el LiveCD prueba con una Tarjeta Madre distinta
3. En la terminal teclea: "fdisk -l" para saber las rutas de las particiones y el tipo
4. Dependiendo del tipo de partición utilizar el comando de comprobación y recuperación de errores:
   • "fsck.ext3" para partición de Linux EXT3 (la que crea Ubuntu por defecto)
   • "fsck.msdos" para particiones FAT16 y FAT32
   • "fsck.ext2" o "fsck.reiserfs" si la partición es EXT2 o ReiserFS respectivamente.

   El comando se ejecutaría: "fsck.ext3 /dev/sdxX" donde xX es la ruta de la partición a examinar.

5. Si marca un error sobre el superbloque tienes que ejecutar "testdisk /dev/sdx" (solo para particiones Linux) donde x es el disco a examinar. Elige la tabla de partición (usualmente Intel) y luego la opción "avanzada" y después "superblock", te mostrara el numero de bloque y tamaño de todos los superbloques de respaldo.
6. Con la info obtenida de los superbloques ejecuta nuevamente el comando de recuperación de errores, pero añadiendo los datos de otro superbloque (cualquiera de los que mostró el testdisk):
   "fsck.ext3 -b 24577 -B 1024 /dev/sdxX"
   donde -b indica el numero de bloque y -B el tamaño.
7. Si esto no te funciona trata de recuperar todos los datos con ddrescue (en Ubuntu activas los repos universe y luego "sudo apt-get install gddrescue" ):
   "ddrescue -n /dev/sdxX /dev/new_disk rescued.log" para recuperar primero los datos "buenos" y luego "ddrescue -r 1 /dev/sdxX /dev/new_disk rescued.log" para recuperar los datos dañados.
   Hay que tener cuidado de que los datos se respalden en otro disco duro (o partición) con capacidad suficiente.

Nota: todos los comandos se deben de ejecutar como root

Als die heel den tijd van punt a naar punt c naar punt d naar a... moet springen @ random verbruikt die uiteraard meer energie als die van a naar b naar c naar d kan gaan.

Het is logisch dat de rechterkant sneller en minder vermoeiend wordt doorlopen als de linkerkant... Toch? :p

Dus gewoon af en toe u hdd defragge en u batterij zou tot een half uur langer moeten kunnen meegaan!

Ситуация - нужно заменить диск в MacBook, на котором стоит и Mac OS (HFS+ partition) и Win (NTFS or FAT32 partition).

Действительно, самое простое и верное решение, это Акронис, который сделает побитовую копию диска вне зависимости от того какие системы/разделы на нем существуют. Для это необходимо:
а) приятель с писюком на винте которого достаточно места для размещения образа вашего диска
б) установленный на его компе Акронис
в) юэсбишный бокс для внешнего диска в вашем форм-факторе

Операции следующие:
1. Вынимаем винт из бука и устанавливаем в бокс
2. Подсоединяем бокс к РС
3. Делаем Акронисом посекторную копию диска
4. Заменяем в боксе старый диск на тот, который вы собираетесь установить в ноут
5. Копируем с помощью Акрониса сохраненный образ на этот новый диск
6. Устанавливаем новый диск в ноут и загружаемся
7. После загрузки системы, с помощью системной дисковой утилиты (ни в коем случае!!!! не Partition Magic'ами!!!! - гоните таких советчиков подальше!!!!), именно дисковой утилитой (или в крайнем случае iPartition) добавляете свободные части нового диска к существующим!
8. Старый диск вставляете в бокс и используете под Time Machine, или просто таскаете с собой в качестве флешки.
Увы, кажется надежного проприетарного решения не существует. Это вообщем, понятно - Эппл не сильно заботится о винде на своих компах.

Desi are o capacitate de "doar" 120GB dimensiunile acestuia...de marimea unei carti de credit este o mare realizare. Grosimea acestuia este evident mai mare decat a unei carti de vizita, insa acest lucru nu-l face sa nu incapa in portofel. Carcasa neagra si lucioasa, ascunde la interior un HDD de 1,8'' cu o viteza de 4200rpm. Conform testelor realizate de producator, vitezele de transfer atinse prin conectorul USB integrabil in carcasa au fost de 27 MB/s la citire si 23 MB/s la scriere.

Pretul acestui dispozitiv nu este deloc unul mic, pornind de la 160$ pentru versiunea 40GB si ajungand la 300$ pentru versiunea 120GB. Bine inteles ca aceste preturi vor fi valabile pentru pietele asiatice si americana....la noi in Romania va ajunge probabil la pret dublu. :)

It's been a while since my last post. I decided not to write anything until I am back in USA since most of the readers are in Slovenia and they know what'g going on with me. It's been 3 months at home and it flew by so fast. Below I'm going to write a bit about the trip.

On Monday I woke up at 10 AM. I wanted to sleep, but I couldn't - I guess I was too nervous about the trip. So during the day I packed and said bye to my friends. I didn't go to sleep since I had to leave Ljubljana at 3 AM, because my first flight was from Zagreb, Croatia. So, me and my parents started driving towards Zagreb's airport which I have to say, I disliked A LOT. We had to wait about 30 minutes before they started checking in. My parents left as soon as I checked in and I went through the security check. The flight was delayed 45 minutes, but was not too bad. A bit shaky at times, but nothing major.

I arrived at Munich airport in Germany. As soon as I got in I saw a huge queue of about 200 people waiting for security check for connecting flights. I saw that I will not make it in time and I talked to a woman working there. She called the people at the check in desk and they said they will try to keep boarding open for a bit longer (there was 3 of us who were trying to catch that flight). So I got through the security check and started running towards my gate. I already heard "This is the last call for flight .... to Denver." I was running threw the long halls, passing 2 security checks and finally boarded. They closed the gate a minute after me. Once again I had a great seat. On my right was 1 guy, on my left was a mother and a child, in front of me a monther with 2 kids, behind me a mother and 2 kinds few rows infront more families few rows behind even more families. The kids kept crying - awful. During the flight (over Greenland) the plane started shaking really badly. You could feel your stomach in your mouth. The mother left of me asked me if I flew before over the Atlantic and I said yes. The mother in front asked me than, if this happens usually. Ofcourse I told them both that this is nothing compared to what normally happens and they have nothing to worry about, while I almost shited my pants. The shaking ended after 2 hours. I even managed to sleep for about an hour (the flight was 10 hours and a half)

We arrived at the Denver airport on time. I could see from there that Denver is just flat, looks like a desert. I would not want to live there :). I went to get coffee and then waited at the airport for my flight. We boarded on time and the flight was smooth, not many people also. We arrived at San Francisco Airport 15 minutes early and I went to get my luggage. Then I took BART (subway) to San Francisco and walked to my dorm. There I had to wait about 30 minutes to get checked in and then I was shown my apartment. 3 people are going to live in the apartment, but I thank God have my own room. Two other guys will have to sleep in the same room. Below are some pictures of my room (the room is messy because I just unpacked something, it was clean before, I SWEAR!!!!).

After I moved my things into the room, I went to get sushi, yummy. Then soon, I met up Micky and his friend and later on with Norma and Melissa. I stayed up for 48 hours! I feel asleep at 1 AM and woke up at 9 AM today. Around 10 AM I went to eat a sandwich at Subway and after that I went to T-Mobile to get a new phone number. Now I also have unlimited data plan on my phone so I can be on MSN all the time! Once I got home I met up with Micky for coffee and later on we went to a computer shop because I went to buy an external HDD (I am running out of space). I got a 1 TB (1024 GB) firewire drive for around 280 USD. I also bought a USB key and 100 DVD (which I guess is stupid, because with that kind of hard drive I will never need them). For lunch I ate sushi from the store, which was also great! Now I don't know what I am going to do. I guess I will just be bored for the evening :).

I have to say being back feels weird. As soon as I got off the subway I felt like, I am home in a way, but at the same time, I am not home. Weird. I am really looking forward for school to start, but I know I will also be really busy, thats way I need to party in the next week!

Суть
1. новый винт вставляется во внешнюю коробку и подключается к маку.
2. далее, открываем диск утилити и выбираем внутренний макбучный винт
3. открываем вкладку Restore
4. далее из левого фрейма ТЯНЕМ мышкой внутренний макбучный винт в поле Source
5. далее из левого фрейма ТЯНЕМ мышкой целевой УСБ-ный диск в поле Destination
6. ставим галку Erase destination чтобы автоматом новый винт отформатировался в HFS+ и стал загрузочным
7. жмем кнопку Restore
8. ждемссс - и - вуаля!

по завершении процесса можно заменить винт в МакБуке.

P.S. целевой диск должен быть по емкости равен или больше диска источника!

Once upon a time, a 1.2MB floppy disk was a significant storage capacity, then along came CDs, Zip drives, DVDs and I could go on and on.  There is a worrying trend that I am observing of people using USB keys, not only as a backup, but as the ONLY copy of their documents.  These devices are great for file transfer - they are compact, with pretty impressive capacity these days, and fast.  They also fail, and when they do so, there is very little that can be done to reclaim the data on them.

So use them by all means to transfer files from one place to another, but please, do not trust your only copy of a file to one!

Where it comes to backing up, there are a number of better options.  A high proportion of users would have less than 4GB of data in total, so the low cost solution of burning a DVD is certainly a good choice.  If you need larger capacities, (such as for large photo libraries, music collections etc), then an external harddrive becomes a cost competitive solution.

Something like this drive from Maxtor is a good choice:

It is small and light (around 170g, 125mm x 80mm x 15mm) and runs off the USB port of your computer.  It doesn’t need to be plugged into the wall, as it draws the power it needs from the USB port.

There are different models with different capacities, up to 320GB.  Inside is simple - it is a laptop harddrive, and that is why I regard them as being a good backup solution.  (Note I still say backup - I don’t trust any file to one location only - you should always have AT LEAST 2 copies of every file, (unless you don’t care if you loose it)).

This isn’t the only type of external harddrive that is available - I chose it to show here as it is a good example of this type of backup solution.

Saya dulu juga berpendapat demikian karena setelah mencoba otak-atik sana-sini  tetap saja tidak ketemu dimana pemicu alias file installer-nya. Tetapi setelah saya mendapatkan pencerahan dari salah seorang teman dan kemudian saya coba di PC ternyata berhasil. Disini saya hanya akan membagikan pengalaman saja bukan berarti saya mau mencuri ide atau sejenisnya. Agar lebih jelas akan saya jelaskan mulai dari Windows 98 dulu, jadi harap bersabar bagi yang sudah ahli dalam instalasi windows 98.

Sebelum kita mulai ada baiknya kalau kita persiapkan alat-dan bahan yang akan kita gunakan untuk eksperimen ini. Alat dan bahan yang kita butuhkan ialah:

• 1 buah PC dengan ketentuan minimal untuk instalasi Windows XP (Proc. P3 750 Mhz, 32 MB VGA, 64 MB Memori, 10 GB harddisk, 32x CD/DVD ROM, HDD 3,5" Floopy A, Monitor standart, keyboard, dan mouse ).
• 1 buah CD installer Windows 98 (atau master instalasi win 98 di hardisk).
• 1 buah CD instaler Windows XP (atau master instalasi win XP di hardisk).
• 1 buah disket bootable windows 98 (jika tidak ada cd installer Windows 98).
• 1 buah CD kosong (jika perlu untuk membuat cd bootable Windows 98).

INSTALASI WINDOWS 98 (hanya sebagai pembanding dan sekedar mengingatkan):
Kita asumsikan bahwa master Windows 98 dan master Windows XP sudah ada di harddisk pada drive D dengan dengan alamat D:\win98se dan D:\winXP. langkah-langkah instalasi:

1. reboot PC anda dengan disket bootable win98 atau cd installer win98.
2. jika memakai CD installer windows 98 atau CD bootable, pada menu pilih Start komputer with CD-ROM support.
3. setelah tampil DOS prompt ( A:\> ) kita pindah ke alamat drive dimana letak instalasi windows 98 tersimpan misalkan drive D dengan mengetikkan D: diikuti [Enter].
4. Setelah DOS prompt-nya  berubah menjadi D:\> ketikkan cd win98se (jangan lupa untuk setiap baris perintah diakhiri degan menekan [ENTER]).
5. lalu ketikkan cd win98 dan prompt berubah menjadi d:\>win98se\win98 kemudian kita ketikan setup diikuti enter.

setelah proses tersebut selesai maka langsung menuju pada proses instalasi Windows 98.

Sekarang saya akan menjelaskan instalasi untuk Windows XP. Sebenarnya proses instalasi Windows XP ini hampir sama dengan Windows 98 hanya saja kita perlu sedikit tambahan file dan sedikit perubahan alamat file installernya. Langkah-langkah instalasi sebagai berikut:

1. reboot PC anda dengan disket bootable win98 atau cd installer win98.
2. jika memakai CD installer windows 98 atau CD bootable, pada menu pilih Start komputer with CD-ROM support.
3. setelah tampil DOS prompt ( A:\> ) pindah ke alamat drive dimana letak file instalasi windows 98 tersimpan misalkan drive D: dengan mengetikkan D: diikuti [Enter].
4. Setelah DOS prompt-nya  berubah menjadi D:\> ketikkan cd win98se (jangan lupa untuk setiap baris perintah diakhiri degan menekan [ENTER]).
5. lalu ketikkan cd win98 dan prompt berubah menjadi d:\>win98se\win98.
6. kita ketikan smartdrv diikuti penekanan tombol [ENTER].  Jika tidak muncul peringatan apapun berarti program Smart Drive sudah jalan. Program ini berfungsi untuk mempercepat proses instalasi. jika anda tidak menjalankan program tersebut maka proses intalasi Windows Xp akan menjadi lambat sekali bahkan lebih lambat dari instalasi yang semestinya.
7. setelah itu kita masuk ke folder instalasi Windows XP hingga prompt berubah menjadi D:\winXP> caranya sama dengan kita pindah ke instalasi Windows 98.
8. setelah itu kita cek keberadaan folder i386 dengan perintah dir.
9. lalu kita masuk ke folder tersebut hingga prompt berubah menjadi D:\winXP\i386>
10. setelah itu ketikkan perintah dir win*.exe lalu akan muncul seperti berikut:

    J:\I386>dir *.exe
      Volume in drive J is WXPVOL_EN
      Volume Serial Number is 4024-D580
     Directory of J:\I386
    
    04-08-2004  04:41           84.939     WINNT.EXE

11. Nah, file instaler WinXP yang kita butuhkan yaitu winnt.exe ternyada ada.
12. kemudian kita ketikan winnt diikuti enter maka akan memulai instalasi windows XP seperti biasa.

I have a reasonable backup regime in place, but obviously it is not perfect, and once again I’ve lost data, so let me just say this again for everyone’s sake, including my own:

Make sure that you ALWAYS have more than one copy of any file that is important to you.

Last night, I was cleaning up a number of files, and transferred about 12GB worth onto one of my main harddrives.  Unfortunately (stupidly), I moved the files rather than just copying them.  So that meant that I still only had a single copy of the file.

The drive that I moved the files to failed sometime between then and now, and has become unreadable, and so all the files that I moved have been lost.  The drive itself is rather large (1.5TB), and fortunately I have a backup of it, so the majority of the files are safe (but now at risk, seeing as they have become the only copy, and that is bad news.)So all that I have lost are the files that I moved (and 12GB is a pretty significant chunk even so).

So stop for a second and think - are there any files that are important to you that you only have a single copy of?  If the answer is “yes” then before doing anything else today, stop putting the problem into the “too hard” basket, and find out what you need to do to back them up, and do it!
