Nigeria special. Modern highlife, afro-sounds & Nigerian blues 1970-6 (ML8131), Nigeria disco funk special. The sound of the underground Lagos dancefloor 1974-79 (ML8132) et Nigeria rock special. Psychedelic afro-rock & fuzz funk in 1970s Nigeria (ML8133) sont trois compilations du label Soundway qui avait déjà sorti d'excellents disques sur la Colombie, le Panama ou le Ghana. Rencontre entre les styles locaux et les influences rock et funk internationales. Très beau travail de collectage et de restauration de vinyles, présentant des morceaux inédits.

Nigeria 70 - Lagos jump. Original heavyweight afrobeat highlife & afro-funk (ML8134) édité sur le label Strut (un premier volume comprenait 3 cd) s'intéresse à différents styles existant au Nigéria à côté de l'afrobeat de Fela Kuti. Entre jazz, afro-funk et juju, les rythmes se mélangent et les styles fusionnent.

Et pour terminer, le meilleur de la série d'après moi, bien qu'ils soient tous excellents: African Scream Contest. Raw and psychédélic afro sounds from Benin and Togo 70s (MK4111) (le 3e cd de la série Analog Africa, du label du même nom) s'intéresse aux artistes méconnus de pays peu connus: le Bénin et le Togo, pendant les années 70. Samy Ben Redjeb, le propriétaire du label, est arrivé à Cotonou en 2005 pour chercher des disques, et il en a trouvé ! Dès les premiers jours, il envoyait chez lui 3500 vinyles qu'il avait pu acheter à un de ses contacts. Par la suite, il retournera plusieurs fois au Bénin pour retrouver les artistes et les interviewer. Le livret, parsemé de magnifiques photos d'époque relate tout cela. La musique quant à elle est extraordinaire, mêlant rythmes vaudou à la soul de James Brown avec guitares hurlantes et chants inspirés, de El Rego et ses Commandos, Vincent Ahehehinnou ou l'Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou.

Anul acesta apare Ghost Rock care imi da peste cap toate ideile despre cum ar trebui sa fie un album de afro-beat/funk. O mare calitate e ca iti aminteste de foarte multe lucruri, de la art-rock la jazz, dar nu poti sa pui degetul pe ceva pentru ca n-ar mai fi Numo, formatia pe care o stiai. Dupa cum declara si unul dintre membrii formatiei: NU suna de parca ar fi fost inregistrat in Nigeria, undeva in anii 70. E o reflectare a emotiilor lor, fuzionate in jazz, funk, electro si tatal lor, afro-beat-ul.

Deci, Ghost Rock (2008), un album de 5 stele al unui grup american (sunt vreo 10-11, majoritatea formati la Universitatea de Jazz din Michigan), care ajunge la un nivel epic pentru genul asta de muzica.

The classic punk bands for example remain relevent. There is always someone who wants to stick it to whatever 'man' is in power, and for them, the music rings as true today as when influential bands like The Clash, Dead Kennedys, The Stooges and The Sex Pistols came to prominence.

Metal is metal is metal is metal. A kick ass riff or mind numbing ear bleedingly great guitar solo is always awesome - wether is was wailed out by Deep Purple or Motorhead back in the day or by Lamb of God or Killswitch Engage last week.

Funk, Soul, Motown and the great girl groups from the 60's and 70's are always idolised by those who perform under the Urban and R&B banners today. Idolised - and rarely matched. By the way, don't get me started on R&B (if its not BB King or Muddy Waters singing about how his girl and his dog up and left him for another man - it aint R&B)!!

Great music is always great. Their albums sell consistently. Pop music inflates like bubblegum, getting bigger and bigger before bursting with a 'pop,' never to be big again. Pop is interchangable and produces more one hit wonders than any other genre. No I will not provide evidence - the fact that I can barely remember the rubbish Im attempting to attack is evidence enough that pop is pretty forgettable.

All you have to do is go into your friendly neighbourhood record store and look for 25th anniversary or even 10th anniversary editions of classic albums. Not greatest hits mind you - any idiot can put out a greatest hits compilation after two albums. Anniversary editions of albums, to me, suggest that the music contained therein is as relevent and wonderful today as it was when it was released. 
Michael Jackson, Weezer, NWA, Jeff Buckley, Dead Kennedys, Meatloaf and many more. The music has endured. It may not be your exact cup of tea - but you gotta respect its longevity.

Ophir "Kutiman" Kutiel is a 25 year old musician, composer and producer from Tel Aviv. He plays drums, keyboards, guitar and bass , among others and we strongly believe that he will leave his mark in 2007 and beyond.

His music draws influences from afro-beat, psychedelic rock, funk and reggae but in different way than most disciples of Fela and Mr.Brown have done before him. Clever heads may even spot some Special AKA, Chocolate Watchband or the pre-historic drum-machine Sly Stone introduced on "There's A Riot Goin' On" on Kutiman's self-titled first album. But being clever is the last thing Kuti tries to be with his music.

Cependant, invité par la soirée Respect, le collectif  CLEK CLEK BOOM a su redonner une humeur estivale à la péniche Concorde.

Ce collectif composé de beaucoup de Français de quelques Brésiliens et d' Anglais  est une véritable révélation. Une sonorité DO BRASIL, un talent au platine ou au "Mike" qui retourne le dance-floor. Hip-hop, électro, électro samba, baile funk, bee-bop, ... ils savent tout faire.

Après les 2 Many Dj's qui remixent les standards de la culture européenne, il faut compter maintenant sur Kgol, Tomb Crew, French Fries, Dj Sandrinho, Tchiky al Dente & The Boo... qui revisitent, inventent, retournent, détournent tout avec perfection et une touche tropical magique lorsque la météo est triste. 

Amateurs de son d' ailleurs,  envie de soleil toute l' année, allez vite les découvrir!

The answer to the question no one bothers to ask. What would happen if Janis Joplin attacked The Strokes with a broken microphone? You could say that these good folks from Montreal are jumping onto the garage bandwagon. Oh well…same wine, sharper sound.

The Outlines

Soul music sticks to the brain like jam on bread. Not long enough to cause hemorrhaging, but just barely enough to induce your mind into a serene slumber. Having said that, The Outlines are not soul purists, not by a long shot. They also do funk, R&B improvisations and hip-hop that doesn’t stop until it crashes headfirst into jazz territory. Wikipedia calls them “experimental”. I think they’re cool.

LCD Soundsystem

Punk rockers who love to shake a leg or two often pledge their allegiance to - the overlord of the disco punk genre. Murphy’s pet project, LCD Soundsystem, make music that is perfect for brightly lit pubs. Throw in a few cocktails and you have a goddamn party that makes you want to dance after getting that first spiked haircut.

The Gasoline Angels

During the Seventies, weak production gave rock music a raw edge over its pop counterparts. Fuzz, feedback and distorted basslines urged our dads to salute all those who vowed to rock and roll. The music exploded with the frantic urgency of an out-of-control ambulance. These guys are channeling the ghosts of hard rock giants who could not step out of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s shadow. Give me a time machine and I’ll show you how to rock out with Gasoline Angels.

I started the day with the intention to program some drum tracks. I grabbed my "Idiot's Guide to Playing Drums" to look up some drumming concepts. What a epiphany! I was vaguely familiar with syncopation, but reading about and hearing it performed with drums gave me clarity.

I have an idea of what I want my "sound" to be, I found the theory behind it, and that makes the creative process less frustrating.

Heavy music. Drums- and bass-driven. Funk.

I find the album relies too comfortably on the current Mark Ronson motivated vintage-pop trend till it rides the bandwagon wheels off it. The sound is too polished at times even if Little Jackie are attempting to nurture a retro Hip-Pop amalgam that capture the joviality of Motown’s 60’s chart nuanced R&B, and post-modernist sampling techniques; a feeling sparsely replenished only by the thrusting horn sections on ‘28 Butts’ and ‘Cryin’ For The Queen’ that mingle the right level of catchy bounce, swing and a grit to equal what is usually expected of Coppola’s spunky songwriting of solo material past. Perhaps the duo should obey the declaration of track 11’s title and either ‘Go Hard or Go Home’.
