The title says it, Project Airbus released the little baby of the A320 family, the A318. You can grab it from their download section. There are a number of liveries, including Air France, Frontier, Airbus Demonstrator, and a sweet Global Jet (private/corporate) livery.

More after I get a chance to download it and spend some time with her. This should be great if it anything like their A320 or A319!

Update: Here are some screenshots of the baby-bus:

Now that Project Opensky's CRJ-700 model has been out for a while now, some of their gifted repainters are starting to distribute their talented work. Released on avsim recently are repaints by Joe DeGregorio, Ron Waite, and Kyle Schurb that take the model to the next level.

[caption id="attachment_463" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="ASA Delta Connection by Joe DeGregorio"][/caption]

Delta Connection, operated by ASA, by Joe DeGregorio features two variations of the livery. A more standard livery based on N716EV and the 25th Anniversary Soaring and Silver livery on N738EV (pictured). Both liveries are available in 32-bit and DXT3 formats so that users can choose the performance level they need. The download is a full package with sounds, FDE, and model.
A little closer to home, is Ron Waite's Delta Connection operated by SkyWest Airlines livery. Represented is N608SK in typical Delta Connection colors with a few added features, like additional reflections on the fuselage and wings. The fan blades are also semi-transparent. Any you look at it, this is one sweet livery.
One of my favorite liveries for the CRJ-700 is Horizon Air. Included in the original CRJ release were Horizon's college billboard liveries. However, there is nothing more elegant and classic than the current Horizon livery. It is beautifully detailed here by Kyle Schurb. (filename: qxcr7.zip)

While I am not sure what to make of this airplane's styling and handling, but the fact is that it has been stunningly modeled in FSX. The Westland Wyvern S.4 is a multi-role, carrier based platform built for the British Naval Air Squadrons during the 1950's. It is powered by a Rolls-Royce turboprop engine with contra-rotating props.

While production ended in 1956, with the remaining units retired in 1958, the Wyvern played a major role in Operation Musketeer in 1956. The aircraft had issues with high g-forces causing fuel starvation on the carrier catapult, which led to the first and only under water ejection after the aircraft ditched on take-off and was cut in to two by the carrier's bow.

The short three year life span of this aircraft certianly make it unique. I am happy to see that Richard Ruscoe, Fraser Paterson, and Philip Chandler, among others, recreated this aircraft for FSX. The exterior model is stunning and it features an outstanding virtual cockpit. The dive brakes are just awesome, the contra-rotating props certainly indicate the power of the beast, and the large bubble canopy actually has rivtets! Great work!

[caption id="attachment_456" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Westland Wyvern in the dawn light off the coast of Japan."][/caption]

Like I said at the beginning of this post, I am really not sure what to make of this bird. While the model is beautiful, the high mounted cockpit, drooping fuselage and large tail really me wonder if a P-51 and a Pilatus PC-12 were morphed into one.

I took the Wyvern on a flight from Okinawa to Tokyo's Narita airport. Graceful isn't exactly how I would describe the flight dynamics. I found that banking required a lot of stick input and the trim to be quite sensitive. Then I encountered some wind gusts off the coast of Japan which made for a hair-raising flight. Then I noticed that I had consumed almost all of the fuel, which meant buzzing Narita tower on fumes (this is a short-range aircraft) and then circling to land. Overall, I did find it fun to fly, but I think smooth flying will take some practice.

By BRJC13

When the phrase “Microsoft Franchise” is thrown up in conversation, I’m sure the first thought that pops into your mind would be “Halo Series”. I mean, what other Microsoft IP does come to mind. Well, for me another does, and that is Microsoft Flight Simulator. Being quite into aviation myself, Flight Simulator in its many iterations has become a favorite gaming experience. However, in recent times, I have neglected the series, simply because my PC hardware wasn’t up to scratch. I never completely forgot about it, but playing at mates’ houses was all I seemed to get in. This train of thought got me chugging onto a new idea, and that was the feasibility of a Flight Simulator port for the Xbox 360. While this idea may seem outlandish and silly, I decided to investigate it further.

To discuss the idea of this port, we need to break it down, and after thinking, there are only three areas which would really effect it, those being hardware issues, software and target audience.

It would really be pointless to start talking about the history of dedicated Flight Simulators on the Xbox 360, or even consoles, as there have really been none. Even combat flight games on the 360 have had a (pardon the pun) turbulent time. The most prominent would have to be Ace Combat 6, and this actually did pretty well, both in terms of financial and critical success. It’s a great way to kill a few hours blowing up fictional air forces but should never be considered a simulator in any sense of the word. Other, albeit lower key titles, have also been released in the form of Blazing Angels 1 & 2, and Over G Fighters. These are also far from simulators, and closer to steaming piles of crap. Anyway, so the history of flight games on the 360 has not been fruitful, to say the least.

MFS has never been really that intensive on PC system requirements, as it has never really been about the graphics, instead successfully focusing on the hardcore simulation. Based on the graphical prowess of the latest iteration, Flight Simulator 10, it is nothing that the 360 could not handle. On the Xbox we’ve seen graphical masterpieces such as Call of Duty 4, Halo 3 and Bioshock, and there is even talk of a console version of Crysis, so there would seemingly be no problem with the 360 hardware in respect to Flight Simulator 10. However, there is one possible problem that could arise. Something that features in a globe encompassing Flight Simulator is a lot, and I mean a lot of textures. Even on a PC, streaming all of these textures in game from a disc would be a slow and frustrating process. On the computer, this is overcome by large, often greater than 20GB installs. On the Xbox though, these large installs are obviously not an option, due to limited hard drive capacity. However, on the Playstation 3, we are seeing more and more games that require a several Gigabyte install, however this is more manageable on the Sony system with larger hard drives. So this texture issue would seemingly be the only problem, however, the next generation Xbox will undoubtedly have game installs, so even this point is moot at that stage. Of course the game could take a leaf out of Namco Bandai and Ace Combat 6’s book and make the entire earth one giant texture…

In my opinion the other initial hardware problem would be that of an input device. The best and seemingly only way to play a flight simulator is with a joystick, and throttle and rudder pedal controls if you’re really hardcore. Another staple of the franchise has been the insane amount of keyboard macros and assigned keys, however this has been necessary. These problems are very easily overcome when thinking in mind of a console port. We already know that the 360 is indeed capable of handling a flight stick, as was demonstrated with the Ace Edge hardware used with Ace Combat 6. However, games like Ace Combat and Blazing Angels can be easily controlled with the gamepad. A dedicated flight sim, such as FSX however, could not be easily played without full joystick support, and herein lays the problem. For the game to be successful, there needs to be first or third party joystick support, and if history teaches us anything, this will be a hard task to do. The only stick made for the 360, the aforementioned “Ace Edge” is no longer in production, as I’m assuming there was no real support or market for it. This problem of a lack of a market will dog any specialized game or hardware on any platform. As you all know, the Xbox 360 can support a USB keyboard, so the problem of macros and other keyboard commands native to Flight Simulator is easily taken care of in that respect.

Going back to the issue of the joystick, and the lack of a market, I think that similarly this will be the main wall for such a specialized game such as a Flight Simulator. In my opinion, this is the main problem preventing even the idea of this kind of game releasing on a console. This lack of a market is pretty obvious. Face it; release a console flight game where something doesn’t blow up every two seconds, and its not going to sell. This is why the kind of project will always remain on my wish list or some developers pet project, and will never amount to anything more. Another reason why a title such as this is ill suited for console is one of the reasons it is fantastic on PC, and that is the customization. The beauty of FSX is the ability to go online and download any aircraft, environment pack or livery that you want. This is also a selling point for many RPG’s on PC over console, the best example possibly being The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. On PC, there are just so many modification possibilities that it could be described as having a glut of them. This kind of customization simply isn’t possible on a console, and even if it was, Microsoft would probably make us pay for anything and everything.

It seems silly to even suggest the inclusion of this title into this generations console market, but I think there is real hope in future (obviously Microsoft) generations of consoles. But, like I said, any attempt on the current Xbox really would end in a flaming heap at the end of the runway.

With my Stage 2 check scheduled for the following day I decided to start up Microsoft Flight Simula

With my Stage 2 check scheduled for the following day I decided to start up Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX) and practice a few of the skills I knew I would be required to demonstrate. It's been a while since I've used FSX for practice, so I was curious what I could do (in FSX) with all my new IFR skills.

I got out my low altitude enroute chart and several IAPs for Stockton, Tracy and Livermore and strapped on my kneeboard. I set the weather to foggy and departed Livermore eastbound towards Stockton, practicing several Holds and DME Arcs, all with great success and accuracy, along the way.

Once I was satisfied with my holding and arcing abilities, I flew several NDB and VOR approaches into Stockton, before turning westward for the ILS into Livermore.

During my simulated flight, two things amazed me. First was that all of the navaids in FSX used the correct frequency. That is to say, when I set the NAV radio to the actual ILS frequency for Livermore (as listed on the IAP), FSX responded correctly and I could hear the identifier for I-LVK when NAV1 was selected on the on-screen audio panel. It's not that I thought it wouldn't be correct, but I was just sort of amazed that I could use all the real Charts and IAPs and have FSX respond correctly. I may have said this before, but I've never been a big fan of flight sims simply because I've found them to be unrealistic for VFR flying. However, now that I can use it to practice IFR procedures my opinion has changed, and I find that FSX is indeed a very useful tool.

The second thing that suprized me was just how much I've learned in the past few months. When I bought FSX a few months ago, I really had no IFR or instrument approach experience, but today I am tuning radios and turning, or in this case clicking, OBSs like a pro. As I mentioned I had the weather set to foggy, and I was amazed to see the rabits (strobes of the approach lighting system) appear ahead through the virtual fog as I approached DA. Regardless of whether or not this was real, I was able to navigate between several airports just by instruments when just months ago I had no clue how to do any of this. Pretty cool if you ask me!

This one is awesome and I am stunned. There is now a great reason to keep that install of FS9 a bit longer... Project Opensky released their CRJ-700! It is available at their download page, but you should read their release announcement <here> first! This release includes the advanced features debuted with their 777v2 series (XML animation) and includes American Eagle, Horizon, Frontier, and United Express liveries to boot. A sound package is in the works, so expect it to be available... well when it is available.

[caption id="attachment_446" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Horizon "OSU" CRJ-700 by Project Opensky leaving SBA."][/caption]

More to come after I get her installed and have a moment to put her through her paces. FSX compatibility is not known at the moment, but I imagine it will do okay. It would be interesting to put this one back to back with Microsoft's CRJ-700 and see how they stack up.

Cheers!

Neue Gauges müssen her?

I came across a new site today that isn't your typical flight simulator add-on. I guess, technically, it is not even an add-on. Four Flights is a site that gives the user an option of four types of flight plans, LIFR, IFR, MVFR, and VFR. Clicking the type of flight plan that you want brings up a random flight containing those conditions. The site is updated hourly and a blog is available.

For instance, I click on IFR to practice my IFR approaches. The site suggested I start at KPIA in Peoria, Illinois and fly to KMFD in Mansfield, OH, where there is currently IFR conditions, a distance of 326nm. While it does not give me a flight plan, I can input the departure and arrival airports into the FSX/FS9 flight planner, load real world weather and then have some fun.

While this site is not ground-breaking, its simplicity is a nice touch. It is truly a great resource for someone that would like to explore new parts of the simulated world, but are not quite sure where to start. I am looking forward to spending more time exploring the simulated world with their flight plans.

Cheers!

Adrian Brausch brings us his wonderfully modelled NH-90 military helicopter for FS9 via the RNZAF website. With three visual models and a great soundset, this model is sure to please. I took it out for a brief flight around SeaTac and then north toward the Oil Hotel (fictional scenery north of Golden Gardens on Puget Sound) and am impressed with the flight dynamics, but really missed a virtual cockpit. I don't have a lot of time flying helicopters (maybe 100 hours), but this one was finicky during transitions, particularly during hover. This is such a great model that I am looking forward to getting to know this beast a lot better!

[caption id="attachment_438" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="NH-90 by Adrian Brausch"][/caption]

This is a release I have been waiting for for my entire flight simulator career; the release of a decent quality Mooney Mite (aka M-18). While I had seen a few works in progress advertised on the world wide web, nothing was near completion. Well, until now. Tim "Piglet" Conrad brought the Mite to life for FSX-SP2 today when he released his model over at Sim-Outhouse (which, by the way, is 7 years old!) While I am still in the process of downloading it, once I boot into Windows and capture some screenshots, I will give a more detailed review.

For now, go grab this historic flight simulator release!

--------------------------------------------

Post Download Update:

This model is super simple to install, just copy the M-18C folder to the airplanes foled and place the *.cab file in the gauges folder. Fire up FSX, select the Mooney Mite and you are ready to go.

[caption id="attachment_424" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="The M-18C is small, but looks impressive."][/caption]

I decided to take the Mite out for a quick flight from Kerrville Municipal Airport (KERV), where the current Mooney Aircraft factory is located, to San Antonio International (KSAT). This short flight would give me plenty of opportunity to experience grounding handling and airborne flight dynamics.

[caption id="attachment_423" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="On the ramp at KERV, prior to departure."][/caption]

The level of detail that Tim put into this model is what we would expect for the latest generation of flight simulators. From the propeller to the map/dog treat pocket in the virtual cockpit, to the Mooney logo on the tail, no detail has been spared.

[caption id="attachment_425" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="The vitrual cockpit is highly detailed and is the perfect place to conduct business."][/caption]

Taxiing the Mite is a true joy as its responsiveness is lively and goes where you tell it to. The oversize tires and unique landing gear definitely make great contact with the ground. After looking at the Mite sitting on the ramp, I wondered if there were some balance issues as the landing gear looks too far forward. It really isn't and the ground experience is pleasantly civil.

[caption id="attachment_426" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Climbing out from KERV for San Antonio."][/caption]

On the takeoff roll, the Mite came off the runway so smoothly that the only indication was the lack of tire noise. Pulling lightly back on the stick brought the nose up and a more aggressive climb. Note that I did not give the Mite full throttle, only slightly more than half and it still became airborne in a reasonable amount of runway length.

[caption id="attachment_427" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Climbing the Mite is slow, but stable. "][/caption]

As I turned toward Comfort, Texas, I did give the Mite more throttle for a more aggressive climb to 4,000 feet. While not a stunning climber, the Mite does well for its small engine and gives the pilot a sense of stability that other small aircraft only wish they could achieve.

[caption id="attachment_428" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Looking toward Kelly AFB as we cruise south of KSAT for runway 30R."][/caption]

Cruising across the Texas hill country at slightly more than 100knts in this Mite was a real treat. The flight dynamics are stable, even with a stiff, gusting crosswind. I learned to appreciate the sensitivity to control input. Like a dog, I found out how much this Mite could be a man's best friend!

[caption id="attachment_429" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Approaching the airport a little too high and fast, but the Mite seems to love it."][/caption]

Approaching San Antonio, I really wanted to continue flying, but it was time to see how this old friend handles descents and approaches. I purposely came in high and fast for runway 30R. I wanted to see what would happen in a rapid descent and then how quickly I could burn excess energy to cause a stall just prior to touchdown. It did pretty good and I was impress with nosing down to ten degrees and throttling back the throttle kept speed under control. At the bottom of the rapid descent, I began leveling off and found that the speed wasn't bleeding off as quickly as I had hoped. Extending the landing gear and then the flap helped, but I still ended up landing more than halfway down the runway. I think this efficiency in maintaining speed speaks kudos to its design.

[caption id="attachment_430" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="A zoom view from KSAT tower, the Mite looks as graceful as she feels."][/caption]

Once parked on the GA ramp at San Antonio, I took a moment to reflect on the flight. The Mooney Mite is an exceptional aircraft whose only limitation is that you can't share its grace with anyone else (it's a single seater). However, as a personal runabout, the Mite is fast, efficient, and stands out on the ramp. Tim's mastery of flight simulator modeling has transformed a little known legend into a download that we can all enjoy. A big cheers goes to Al Mooney for creating the wonderful Mite in the first place and Tim "Piglet" Conrad for making this experience available to all of us!

As I posted previously, Premier Aircraft Design (PAD) has been working on a Dornier Do228, which is now released. Initial release includes two livery versions of Carribean Island Hoppers, Air Caraibes and Air Guadeloupe, available for both FS2004 (FS9) and FSX. Also available for download on their Do228 page is the Arcus Air livery pictured below. The usually eye candy is included with fully animated flaps, opening doors, full interior model, and virtual cockpit.

I took the FSX version of the Arcus Air Do228 (no longer available) out for some touch and goes at Madeira (LPMA) airport in Portugal and a short flight between Long Beach and Santa Barbara. They made for short hops, but it gave me a good idea for how this turboprop handles.

This is a wonderful aircraft that actually feels like a turboprop and must be flown with intention, not just slapped around; throttle position is extremely important, as is the pitch. I found myself fighting for control initially and soon realized that making more minute adjustments and letting the Do228 react before making more adjustments was the way to go. After getting the feel of her, she settled into the steep, banking approaches of both Madeira and Santa Barbara (SBA). I have never enjoyed these approaches as much! While not exactly forgiving, the beauty and grace she gives you when treated right is beyond words! Outstanding FDE work!

Cheers and Happy Flying! I for one will be spending a lot more time in the virtual cockpit of this babe!

When Project Airbus released their A319 model, they continued their legacy of producing a highly detailed model of the prime 737 competitor from across the pond. While some have complained that the lack of virtual cockpit hinders its FSX experience, I continue to see their models as impressive every-time I load one in FS9 and FSX.

When I saw the US Airways, America West livery by Steve McBee, I began drooling immediately. This transition livery is a combination of the old the America West NC livery with US Airways titles. I couldn't wait to take it on a short flight from Denver International (KDEN) to Sky Harbor (KPHX) to gawk at the new work of art by Steve that adorns the PA A319 model.

Today on fsGreece you find a new update, a general scenery of Crete. The scenery contains the airports of: Heraklion LGIR, Chania/Souda AB LGSA (look it in the image), Kasteli AB (LGTL) and Sitia (LGST). It contains also 78 cities. The scenety is adapted for FSX, and also this is a good news!
