First you need to install some packages from the ubuntu repositories:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install build-essential cdbs fakeroot dh-make debhelper debconf libstdc++5 dkms linux-headers-$(uname -r)

Now you have to create the .deb files from the original ati package so type this command in console:

sh ati-driver-installer*.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/hardy

Now it's time to edit some configuration files, such the linux restricted modules. Type:

sudo gedit /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common and add fglrx at the line DISABLED_MODULES, obtaining something like this: DISABLED_MODULES = "fglrx".

There're just two thing to do now: install the .debs and edit the xorg.conf file. To install the debs write in console:

sudo dpkg -i xorg-driver-fglrx_*.deb fglrx-kernel-source_*.deb fglrx-amdcccle_*.deb

And then open the xorg configuration file:

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

edit the line Driver in the Section "Device" putting fglrx instead of vesa. Now save,  reboot and it should work! To see if everything it's ok just open a console and type fglrxinfo, if the output it's something like this:

Muy pocos usuarios tienen la precaución de guardar los CDs que le vienen con la PC, o muchas veces la PC es regalada, donada o comprada usada, y el error no es de esa persona, sino del usuario original, la primera mano, bah.

Se puede buscar en internet largo rato hasta conseguir cada uno de los drivers de todas las placas o dispositivos de la PC, y puede ser que algun elemento no se pueda conseguir facil, ya sea porque es de marca económica o porque la marca desapareció.

En este portal se pueden buscar todos los controladores, buscando por tipo de dispositivo o por marca.

There are things that make me happy. There are things that make me smile. There are things that make me feel like life is extra peachy and things couldn’t be better. Then there are things that piss me the eff off! Whether I’m walking up the street, sitting on the train, out at a restaurant, or out at a club, there are things that make me wanna shout obscenities or ball up my hand, cock (ultra pause) back my arm, and punch somebody in the throat then ask them to speak to me. The following is a list of things that piss me off. They are in no particular order because they probably piss me off equally. Let the ranting begin…

People using cell phones as a boom box.

I hate when I’m on a bus or train and hear music that isn’t coming from the headphones of someone’s Ipod, Zune, or other musical device. Even if it’s a song that I like, I get equally as pissed off when I look over and see that it’s coming from somebody’s cell phone. This anger is intensified when it’s a young unkempt black guy blasting a song laced with profanities and those in a 10-15 radius are looking appalled. I won’t lie. When I’m in my Altima, I blast these same songs while I’m driving…usually with the windows up because I either have the AC or heat on. But when I’m on public transit or in a very public place, I don’t need to see you nodding your head to your cell phone beyond what’s in your ringtone. I can deal with it for 10 seconds, but not 3 minutes and 45 seconds. Turn that ish off before I punch you in the face have to ask you to turn it off!

N*gga This, N*gga That

This is major problem when I’m on or waiting for public transit. I hate when I’m surrounded by a number of easy-going or professionally dressed white folk and I hear Black or Hispanic folk going nuts with the N-word. There was a time where I was on the subway cringing as the “civil” folks looked to me as if they were quietly saying “That’s your people.” while an ambiguous minority dropped the N-word about 20 times in 60 seconds. As much as I wanted to throw a dagger between the dude’s eyes, I could do little more than act slightly uncomfortable in order to differentiate myself from the ignorant fellow. I nearly got off the train 2 stops early just to get away, but fortunately his stop came up first. When he exited, I took the monkey off my back and placed it on the seat next to me.

They really don’t treat your food the same when they know you’re sitting in your car. If it McDonalds, I get half a thing of fries. I gotta knock on the little glass and ask them to fill it up like I’m in New Jersey getting some gas. If it’s Taco Bell, my Mexican pizza or taco supreme happens to look a little bit sloppier than when I’m in there standing at the counter making sure they don’t do something foul or act haphazardly.

A raíz de una duda que un usuario me preguntaba en los comentarios he decidido escribir este truquillo que tenía pendiente.

A veces, tenemos dispositivos que no funcionan correctamente, que están mal instalados o que nuestro sistema no los reconoce y por lo tanto no puede instalarlos.

Pues bien, en la ventana de Administrador de Dispositivos hacemos clic con el botón derecho sobre el dispositivo que no funciona bien (suele tener un icono especial para señalizarlo) y pulsamos en Propiedades.

En la pestaña Detalles nos sale la siguiente información:


Pues bien de ahí cogemos los datos VEN y DEV. En mi caso VEN 13F6 y DEV 0111.

Luego vamos a la página: PCIDataBase.com

Donde introduciremos en Vendor Search las cifras 13F6 o en Device Search 0111. Luego buscando, obtenemos los detalles del dispositivo y un enlace a la web del fabricante para descargar el driver.

The fact is, computer products/peripherals are often distributed with under tested device and system drivers, which can cause real mayhem including intermittent system crashes (one of the hardest problems to diagnose), poor system performance, or buggy peripheral performance.

Manufacturers of course, are not slackers when it comes to improving previously released drivers in order to fix bugs, errors and conflicts with other programs, (more common than you may think), or to increase peripheral functionality. For example, my HP home printer has had three improved drivers released in the past two years that have increased stability and functionality somewhat.

If you want to take a trip on the “Frustration Express” then you can try to update your drivers manually. Believe me; you’ll be in for a long and frustrating ride.

You’ll start by Googling the driver name, then investigation available drivers, many of which will have a disclaimer stating that it was not written specifically for your system/device, you’ll try it - then delete it and then your back to Googling again. Repeat the previous frustrating experience as many times as necessary and you might get lucky.

About 4 weeks ago, I was somehow suckered into updating SP2 to SP3.  I failed to read anything about it before the update and figured, "what the heck."  Two weeks later, I realized something was wrong when I tried to play WoW.  An error message came up saying that it couldn't find a usable video device.

I am very busy and just didn't have the time to really dig in and figure out what went wrong.  Today, I tried to open Google Earth.  It could not open using DirectX.  I figured it was time to fix since I had a little spare time.

I then tried to update / reinstall the ATI driver and it just wouldn't take.   So, now I had a complete loss of a video driver.  Well, I got sick of it all and rolled back before the update.

The video driver came back and I was able to play WoW and the ATI properties came back.   Unfortunatly, I had updated FireFox to version 3 sometime after the update so I had to reinstall FF3.  I also had to install most of my addons.  Not a big deal since it still had all of the addon settings and whatnot.

FireFox Rox! Windows sucks...especially SP3.  Don't install it unless you really thing you have to.

I have had other problems at work updating to it.

Allstate yesterday (Oct. 1, 2008) launched a program it said has "potential to improve what could be the most important piece of auto safety equipment: the mind of the driver." Called InSight, the training software helps drivers increase visual alertness and think more clearly. It will be installed on computers in the offices of Allstate agents, where insured drivers can use it.

Local Allstate agents include Dolores Fleming, 5 N. Sunnybrook Rd., Sanatoga PA; Ryan Schauer, 3277 W. Ridge Pk. Ste B203, Pottstown; and Brian Casner, 6 Glocker Way, Pottstown.

Insight, created by San Francisco-based Posit Science, reportedly heightens "visual processing skills known to be important for safe driving." Videos demonstrating how it works are available online.

The insurer intends to invite up to 200,000 Pennsylvania drivers, age 50 and older, to participate in the program. They benefit because Allstate may begin offering discounts to mature drivers involved in InSight exercises.

Allstate thinks it will win too, by reducing the number of accidents involving its insured older motorists. During the past three years, Allstate said, nearly 121,000 reportable accidents involving drivers between ages 50 and 75 occurred on Pennsylvania highways, killing more than 1,300 people.

After this was done with, the woman told me I can expect to have my license within 30 days, and hands me the piece of paper hat would be my license until I received the real thing in the mail. And with that, I had done it. Roughly eight months after I has begun this quest, I had reached my goal, and victory was bittersweet. And with grave excitement, I received my license in the mail a day after I posted the first entry in the Laborious License series on September 26th, 22 days after I was at the DPS, hopefully for a very very long time.

I hope you enjoyed my lengthy tale of melancholy, if you managed to get this far I salute you. But this was a story that was begging to be told, and I had to get it off my chest and written down somewhere, what better place than here? Don't worry, I've got some posts coming that are less wall-o-text, and more interactive. But at least you were (hopefully) entertained!

Today's aggravation is merging and merge lanes. A merge lane has one of two signs (in BC). One will say "Merge." The other will show two lanes merging into one. The protocol, the rule, the law (in some areas), in fact,  good common sense says to do the following.

Merge does not mean come to a full dead stop. Merge does not mean follow the car right in front of you and butt in too. Merge does not mean cut off a person merging into the traffic flow. Notice that word "flow." Merge lanes are designed to try to keep the traffic flow steady. Many areas are now extending those merge lanes even farther. The Number 1 Highway between Kensington and Gaglardi (Greater Vancouver) and along the I405 (Seattle and surrounding areas) have lengthened merge lanes to try and alleviate traffic flow problems.

Merging means oncoming traffic and merging traffic alternates, one by one into the flow. If you're on the highway and in the right-hand lane, you have two choices: either move into the left-hand lane to facilitate the merging people, or slow down so that they can merge without crashing into you. Speeding up and driving side by side is pigheaded and stupid. Pay attention to what traffic is doing and try and make it a dance, not a traffic accident.

If you are the person merging, then merge, slowly, safely, coming up to speed if possible. Don't stop but continue pulling ahead in the merge lane, shoulder checking and looking in your sideview mirror. Do not merge at the very entrance where the ramp joins the highway, but continue pulling ahead in the merge lane. This does two things: alerts the cars on the highway that you are merging and allows for the flow of the cars behind you who then won't be backed up and stopped. It completely wrecks the flow if someone decides to merge too soon onto the main thoroughfare.

Traffic going east on the number 1 where it went from North Vancouver over the Ironworkers' Memorial Bridge into Vancouver is the only place where I've ever seen merging work flawlessly. People do that commute everyday. Whether they still merge politely, I don't know. Sometimes there is just too much traffic for the flow to be anything but slow, in the merge lane or on the highway. But if people try to pay attention, to alternate cars from both lanes and adjust their driving accordingly, it will certainly keep the pace going much better and keep tempers down. Presume that it's the law to be polite and then just try it for fun.

A new Ohio law took effect Tuesday that will set up a searchable online database of drunken drivers by name, birth date and address, the Columbus Dispatch (dispatch.com) reported Tuesday.

Eventually the general found his seven men.

He found Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper, and Deke Slayton. He found the seven astronauts of the Mercury Space Program.

And like any good manager, after having found them, he trained them. They were taught everything from the esoterics of gravitation and rocket propulsion to the very practical matter of how to control yaw, roll, and pitch in the vacuum of space. They were given the best teachers, the most up-to-date equipment, and the time to focus. Over two years they acquired a wealth of new skills and knowledge.

Alan Shepard's fifteen-minute suborbital flight was the first of six successful missions (Deke Slayton fell foul of a preexisting heart condition), which culminated in Gordon Cooper's thirty-four-hour, twenty-two-orbit marathon.

By the time Cooper splashed down, the Russians had been caught up with, America's pride had been restored, and the platform had been laid for the leap to the moon.

From almost every angle, the MISS program (Man in Space Soonest) was a model of project execution excellence: superior technology combined with carefully selected and well-trained employees, all focused on a specific mission and buoyed by the hopes of a nation. No wonder it _succeeded.

But look closer. When you examine the Mercury Program through a strictly managerial lens, you do not see a picture-perfect project. You see six very different missions. And putting aside for a moment the _spectacular dimension of the endeavor and the inspirational bravery of each astronaut, the quality of the performance in each of the six missions can be comparatively ranked—two textbook, two heroic, and two mediocre. Look closer still and you realize that, in most instances, the individual astronauts themselves caused this variation.

Alan Shepard and Wally Schirra, both career military men, executed their duties perfectly: no drama, no surprises, textbook missions.

John Glenn and Gordon Cooper were a little special. Glenn was the heroes' hero. Cooper was so laid-back, he actually fell asleep on the launchpad. But both of them faced severe mechanical difficulties and then responded with cool heroism and technical brilliance—Cooper even managed to achieve the most accurate splashdown of all, despite the complete failure of his automatic reentry guidance systems.

The performances of Gus Grissom and Scott Carpenter were rather less impressive. Grissom piloted a clean flight, but he appeared to panic after his capsule splashed down. It seems he blew the escape hatch too early, the capsule filled with water, and it sank to the sea floor sixteen thousand feet below. NASA never recovered the three-thousand-pound capsule.

Carpenter, meanwhile, was so excited to be up in space that while in orbit he maneuvered his capsule this way and that until he had used up almost all his fuel. When it came time to reenter the earth's atmosphere, he was unable to make the appropriate corrections to his angle of reentry and ended up splashing down 250 miles from his designated landing sight. He was lucky. If he had been a couple of degrees shallower in his approach, the capsule would have bounced off the atmosphere and spun off into space for eternity.

NASA must have looked at the performance of their astronauts and wondered, "Why this range in performance? We selected for experience, for intelligence, and for determination. They all had the same training and the same tools. So why didn't they perform the same? Why did Cooper excel while Carpenter struggled? Why did Glenn behave so calmly and Grissom less so?"

The answer is that despite being similar in many ways—and all exceptionally accomplished, in comparison with the rest of us—these six men possessed different talents.

What does that mean? It means that although each of these men faced the same stimuli, the way they reacted to these stimuli and then behaved was very different. During orbit, Carpenter was so excited that he couldn't stop playing with the altitude jets; yet Cooper felt so calm, he actually slept through some of his orbits. At takeoff, Grissom's pulse rate spurted to 150. Glenn's never climbed above 80.

Same stimuli, vastly different reactions. Why? Because each man filtered the world differently. Each man's mental filter sorted and sifted, making one man acutely aware of stimuli to which another was blind. Bobbing in the water after splashdown, the dependable Wally Schirra was so focused on "doing it right" that he stayed in the capsule for four hours in order to complete every step of his postflight routine. His mental filter blocked out any twinges of claustrophobia. Gus Grissom's didn't. All indications are that barely five minutes after splashing down, he felt the tiny little capsule closing in around him. His mental filter, no longer able to dampen his growing panic, told him to get out, to escape, now, now. The hatch blew.

You have a filter, a characteristic way of responding to the world around you. We all do. Your filter tells you which stimuli to notice and which to ignore; which to love and which to hate. It creates your innate motivations—are you competitive, altruistic, or ego driven? It defines how you think—are you disciplined or laissez-faire, practical or strategic? It forges your prevailing attitudes—are you optimistic or cynical, calm or anxious, empathetic or cold? It creates in you all of your distinct patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior. In effect, your filter is the source of your talents.

Your filter is unique. It sorts through every stimulus and creates a world that only you can see. This filter can account for the fact that the same stimulus produces vastly different reactions in you from those in the person next to you.

For example, imagine you are asleep on a long flight when the plane encounters some high-level turbulence. Do you wake up, convinced that the main reason you haven't heard any explanation from the cockpit is that the pilots are too busy strapping on their parachutes? Or do you stay sleeping, a slightly more vigorous head nodding the only sign that your body notices the bumps?

Imagine you are at a party with some people you know and some you don't. Do you find yourself compelled to dive into the crowd of strangers and swim easily through the throng, remembering names, telling stories, turning strangers into friends? Or do you hug the corner with your significant other, scanning the room for anyone else you might know and nervously rehearsing the one joke you might have to tell tonight?

Imagine you are arguing with your boss. As the argument intensifies, do you find yourself becoming colder, clearer, more articulate, as your brain hands you one perfect word after another? Or, despite all your preparations, does your emotion rise and your brain shut down, separating you from all of those carefully rehearsed words?

Because every human being is guided by his unique filter, the same situation produces very different reactions. What is ridiculously easy for him is excruciatingly difficult for you. What is stimulating to you is tedious for someone else.

All truck drivers face the same situation—miles of road, an unwieldy load, and swarms of little cars buzzing around them. They all have the same training, the same experience. But some of these drivers drive twice as many miles as their colleagues yet suffer half as many accidents. Why? Their filter. When you ask the best drivers, "What do you think about when you are driving?" they all say the same thing. They all say, "I think about what would I do if. . . if that car pulled out right now. If that pedestrian decided to try to cross before the light changed. If my brakes failed." While the other drivers are thinking about the next rest stop, how much longer they have to go today, or other, more diverting subjects, the best drivers are playing "what if?" games, anticipating scenarios, planning evasive maneuvers. Same stimuli, different reactions, very different performance.

Likewise all customer service representatives face the same situation—thousands of telephone calls coming in from disgruntled customers. They all have the same technology, the same experience and training. Yet the best take a third fewer calls than the average to solve the same complaint. Why? Because for the best, many of whom are shy in person, the phone is an instrument of intimacy. It offers them shelter from the customer while at the same time giving them the chance to reach through the phone and connect more quickly and more closely than if they were standing face-to-face with her. They picture what room the customer is in. They imagine what the customer looks like. They smile and wave their hands even though they know that the customer cannot see what they are doing. Instinctively their filter takes every disembodied voice and fashions a full human being. On the other end of the line, the customer feels the difference.

This filtering of their world is not a conscious, rational process. It does not happen once a week, allowing them the luxury of sitting back and weighing up all alternatives before deciding on the most "sensible" course of action. Rather, their filter is constantly at work, sorting, sifting, creating their world in real time.

Maybe you are speed-reading this so that you can get to the end before your plane flight ends. Maybe the flight has nothing to do with it; you are simply a compulsive speed reader. Maybe you have just picked up your pen to underline this paragraph or to make a scrawled note in the margin.

Your filter is always working. Of all the possibilities of things you could do or feel or think, your filter is constantly telling you the few things you must do or feel or think.

Solution:

1. Download and install the Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) KB888111 from Microsoft.

NB: The installer will work under SP1 & SP2 but not SP3. For SP3 users, you will need to use e.g. WinRAR to manually extract the files (from the SP2 installer EXE) Hdaprop.dll, Hdashcut.exe, Hdaudbus.sys, Hdaudio.sys, Hdaudres.dll, Portcls.sys for installation.

2. Download and install the latest Realtek Audio Codecs from Realtek.

En entradas anteriores vimos los referentes a Toshiba, Packard Bell y Acer, hoy vamos a ver como buscar y descargar drivers para ordenadores SONY VAIO.

Lo primero que tenemos que hacer es saber exactamente el código y número de serie de nuestro equipo Sony VAIO.

Podemos de igual modo sin necesidad de saber el código del producto y el número de serie de nuestro equipo descargar dos tipos de drivers, por un lado los que vienen preinstalados en origen en nuestro equipo, o bien, acceder a la descarga de las actualizaciones de drivers disponibles.

DESCARGAR DRIVERS CON CODIGO Y NUMERO DE SERIE:
Una vez sabemos el modelo exacto de nuestro equipo vamos a la Web de Sony donde nos mostrará la siguiente ventana, en la que introduciremos el código del producto y el número de serie (lo encontraremos en la parte inferior si es Portátil y en la zona trasera si es de Sobremesa).

Desde aquí nos mostrará los drivers de nuestro equipo para lo que solo debemos pulsar en cada uno de ellos para que se inicie la descarga.

DESCARGAR DRIVERS PREINSTALADOS:
Desde este enlace accederemos a una página que nos mostrará la siguiente imagen en la que tenemos que configurar las diferentes categorías con los datos de nuestro equipo.

• Categoría Principal: Desplegar y seleccionar ordenador Portatil o de Sobremesa.

• Categoría del Modelo: Desplegar y señalar el que corresponda a nuestro equipo.

• Seleccione el Modelo: Desplegar y señalar el que corresponda a nuestro equipo exactamente.

En la zona inferior nos mostrará los drivers disponibles para descargar, simplemente pincháis en "Original Drivers Package" y se iniciará la descarga de los drivers.

DESCARGAR DRIVERS ACTUALIZACIONES o UPDATE:
Desde este enlace accederemos a una página que nos mostrará la siguiente imagen en la que tenemos que configurar las diferentes categorías con los datos de nuestro equipo.

• Categoría Principal: Desplegar y seleccionar ordenador Portatil o de Sobremesa.

• Categoría del Modelo: Desplegar y señalar el que corresponda a nuestro equipo.

• Seleccione el Modelo: Desplegar y señalar el que corresponda a nuestro equipo exactamente.

Después de esto en la casilla "Sistema Operativo" seleccionamos dentro de las posibles opciones el que nosotros precisemos así como el "Idioma de instalación".

Más abajo nos mostrará todos los drivers que estén disponibles como podemos apreciar en el ejemplo de la imagen inferior.

Solo restará pulsar sobre cada uno de los enlaces para iniciar la descarga del driver.

The Beeb is currently in the process of finalising its coverage plans for next season, and former Radio 5 Live commentator Jonathan Legard is strongly believed to be heading for the lead commentary role.

It has been reported that Legard is close to finalising negotiations to lead the commentary team, which will see him return to Formula One after a spell in football.

Legard is expected to be joined by Brundle, but the deal has not yet been completed.

"Nothing is signed yet. I am hopeful that I can move to the BBC and continue my current role, and we are still in discussions."

It has been suggested that former children's television presenter Jake Humphrey will assume Steve Rider's role as anchor, whilst David Coulthard will not be in retirement for long, taking over from Mark Blundell.

Toyota's complaint that Vettel was released unsafely into the path of their German driver Timo Glock was rejected by the stewards following examination of video footage, and interviews with the drivers involved.

This means that Vettel will keep his fifth place result from the Grand Prix, and sees Toyota remain fifteen points clear of Scuderia Toro Rosso, with three rounds remaining.
