There was once a day when Metallica hated all things electronic, go ahead and ask there drummer Lars, I'm sure he would give you a earful.  But the times have changed and thank god the band has too.  In what could hopefully be a huge success for Metallica and Guitar Hero, Metallica is releasing there newest album, Death Magnetic, as a downloadable album playable on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

The album on disc and on download are releasing side-by-side on the same day.  A pretty huge thing in the realm of digital downloads, especially for Metallica.  Even better is this particular digital download is available only on Guitar Hero, with two songs specifically for Guitar Hero only!  The Guitar Hero version of the album is in its complete form, no cheesy four songs or single tracks here folks, its the whole deal. Oh and the download is forward compatible with the upcoming, Guitar Hero World Tour.

The download will set you back $18.00, which isn't to bad, considering the album on CD would set you back maybe $12.00 to $14.00 bucks?!  Here's hoping the album itself is badass.  If so I know I will be picking this up.

So what does this mean for future album releases?  I think this is a very exciting time for games and music lovers a like.  The synergy of music and rhythm based games is a no brainer. Hopefully we can see a day where we have a iTunes like store with playable songs on Guitar Hero or Rock Band.  I know Rock Band is blowing away Guitar Hero when it comes to downloadable songs, and they to, have had a album released as a download.  But this is different, a album and game version released the same day, very cool stuff.
