i've been writing a music column on marie claire korea for about 2 years and goin' on. although it's a fashion magazine, with this page, i try to pick up some forgotten dusty records by unsung heroes, as well as up to date - instant classic records by new comers. (naturally on my viewpoint...) this time, it's so great to introduce (officially!-?) the great daptone records and its crew this month. nuff respect !

One of my favourites... 4/5

Sharon Jones brings the funk.

This is not the kind of music you hear in Kentucky. This isn't the kind of music you hear anywhere anymore.

I would have never considered myself to be a particular fan of soul music, but good dance music transcends all bounds. Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings know how to make good dance music. It all seemed to flow so naturally out musically through the energy they put in to the actual performance of it. Or maybe the energy came from the music. It was hard to tell. It didn't matter.

The story of Sharon Jones is a beautiful one. She was born in 1956 in Georgia listening to the deep south sounds of soul such as James Brown & singing gospel in church. Everyone always knew she had the voice, but she was told that she didn't have the look and that she was "too dark-skinned, too short, too fat and too old." She never stopped singing, but wasn't able to do it full time, instead becoming a security guard on Riker's Island at the Maximum Security Penitentiary in New York.

I hate that she had such a difficult life, and it embarrasses me that image is still so important as it is in the entertainment industry. Nevertheless, Sharon persisted, and eventually caught of some important people after singing back-up for Lee Fields.

Sharon was eventually helped to create Daptone Records as the label grew. Years later she came to Louisville. What amazed me about this show was that this was music I could share with my father. I mean that slightly metaphorically because my father actually likes a lot of my music, but this show included every age group from 18 to people in their 50s or 60s, and I imagine many brokenhearted kids under 18. I guess that's not too much of a surprise when Sharon herself is 51 (going on 23). But who would ever imagine a soul/funk show selling Headliners completely out? I met kids from St. Louis who drove the 4-5 hours because the show had sold out there at a much smaller venue. They drove all that distance thinking no way would a venue of over 700 capacity would sell out. Fortunately it did only after they got their tickets at the door. Soul music selling out Headliners in Louisville, KY? Simply amazing.

Sharon has a sort of energy that simply blows the mind. She was so interactive with the crowd, bringing 7 different fans on stage at different times through the show. The last guy to get up on the stage actually rapped during the performance until Sharon playfully ripped the mic away from him & rapped back. It was simple, but awesome to hear.
Not to mention how many songs they played. I didn't recognize many of them, but she didn't even come out on stage herself for the first three. But when she did....Lord, did that woman have soul! And she knows how to dance. She went wild on stage & had to get of her shoes because they were slowing her down. For a while Sharon seemed to get agitated with the sound crew at Headliners, but you could tell she really enjoyed playing this Louisville show. She was smiling most of the time that she wasn't incredibly intense. How many shows do you think they've had a member from the crowd rap at the show? It was all really incredible.

She also told us a little story in song form about her ancestry...about her African ancestors being put in chains and being brought to America. Then she told us about her Indian ancestors being forced off their lands. Then came Sharon Jones.

Sharon has something special. She is a beautiful person who makes beautiful music with unparalleled energy since James Brown has begun to rest in peace. No pictures can do the show justice because to understand this woman or her music, you need to see her dance and see those legs move. I've danced more in the last week than I think I have in my entire life.

I've already downloaded Binky's Christmas single, "Stoned Soul Christmas" b/w "World of Love." The former, at least, will definitely make my 2008 Christmas compilation.

In reading an article about the rise and fall (and rise again!), of Stax records I came across another article about a (relatively) new label who loosely model themselves on the original Stax label - Daptone records.

The label started with the idea that musicians could make music they think is cool, record it, and put it out on their own. A radical idea indeed! The group of musicians have their hand in a number of projects, most notably Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, who some might consider to be a revivalist take on classic southern soul traditions. But, as it is pointed out in the article in the January issue of MOJO magazine, these guys have backed Amy Winehouse - both on record and live.

Amy Winehouse, despite her recent tabloid adventures, has a smash album on her hands with Back to Black (a recommended release as well, people, if you've not heard it). So, they're not a stab at hitting the nostalgia market - millions of people are loving the sounds they're making right now from middle-aged rockists like me, to teenage girls singing in the front rows in venues across the globe.

I find the very existence of this collective of musicians, producers, and studio/label owners very encouraging. It helps that their approach takes its lead from the basics - live music, real instruments, with artistic control taken pretty literally. In making the comparison to Stax, let's hope they continue to exemplify the strengths of that label - great music, family environment, lots of hits, and a lasting legacy. And let's hope too that they avoid the pitfalls!

Check out their roster of musicians, and the new record from Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, 100 Days, 100 Nights.

Afro Soul Keys of the Budos Band.

To say that the first night of the 4th & Kingsley Soul Club was a success is a severe understatement. The Budos Band brought down their very own brand of Afro Soul with the spirit of Fela Kuti and the JB's wrapped together with the Ethiopiques in a way the Asbury Lanes has not seen since it's inception. The night started out with Larry Grogan, DJ Bluewater and myself laying down the vibe with a variety of Deep Funk and Soul 45s. When Bluewater started of his set with the Poets of Rhythm's "Santa's Got A Bag of Soul", you just knew it was going to be a great night. It's funny, when the band sound checked early, people stopped in their tracks, whether they were eating, bowling, drinking, I mean literally stopped, because the Shaolin Afro Soul these cats have going on is that good. I did see a lot of new faces, many old faces, and I will tell you that I appreciate it greatly. It's vital to keep a scene like this alive here in Asbury Park. Bands like the Budos are keepers of the flame of real music, of analog tape machines and 2 inch tape splicing, all that may sound obscure to you, but are necessary in this otherwise digital world of processed garbage we call music. The band played a solid, non stop one hour set, covering ground from both of their records Up From the South and Budos II. A highlight was a cover song from an Egyptian band, which was something new they added to their show. ( Dan Foder hit me up with a set list, I forgot to grab one!) The crowd, who took a bit longer to get down and dance to the music, eventually got their groove back and by the time "Up From the South" was finished, I believe they wanted more. They did get more (good music that is) as Larry and I got back behind the turntables and played a variety of Sweet and Northern, plus some Heavy Funk that kept the heads nodding until last call. I honestly could have kept spinning until 5 am, but last call was at 2, and when you have to go, well you have to go. That leaves more for next time.

Well I've been waiting for this night to arrive, and of course here it is, the opening night of The 4th & Kingsley Soul Club at The World Famous Asbury Lanes. This night is shaping up to be a good one, and the 45s are picked out, the Big Man is here from London, and we're ready to get our Funky Soul on. If you are within driving, biking, walking, or public transportation distance, I definitely advise you to check out the show. On stage live, we have The Budos Band. If that weren't enough, well myself and Larry from Funky 16 Corners will be providing the 45 HEAT the rest of the night. We've got some great press from NJ to London to NYC, to Japan (how I do not know!), and we're ready to kick this thing off proper. If that's not enough, the show will be broadcast LIVE on JamNow! via the internet. All you have to do is click the Asbury Lanes link. There might even be a seeeecret selector who's in town and ready to drop the needle on some Soul 45s. You'll have to come out to see! Get your dancing shoes on and come see what real music is all about. The details are on the flyer, photos and a recap will come tomorrow. See you all there!

Keep Diggin'!

Binkie Griptite - Stone Soul Christmas from the Daptone Records 45

Well here we are just about a week before the Christmas holiday, and I've realized that I haven't even thrown in a Christmas side in. This weekend was a busy one. The gig went well on Saturday night (thanks for the well wishing Andy!) despite the rain that got terribly worse as the night progressed. It always makes me feel good to see people nodding their heads and dancing to bands like Quantic, or even Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. It gives the brainwashed FM radio crowd hope in my eyes. I'm just trying to spread the Funk around y'all, you know what I'm saying? That being said, let's jump into this festive 45, shall we? Here's "Stone Soul Christmas" from Binky Griptite on Daptone Records.

For those of you not familiar with Daptone or the Daptone Super Soul Review, this man is an integral part of the entire record company as a whole. Emcee and guitarist Griptite gets the whole party started. As a solo artist or member of the Dap-Kings, the man has energy like a young JB, and the showmanship to go along with it. I know that's a big comparison, but really, who the hell is doing it like they used to these days? No one. You try saying one of those intros while playing the guitar, doing a myriad of dance steps, or just trying to keep up with Sharon Jones. Binky is equally comfortable as a veteran sideman (Janet Jackson and many others), as a main artist (Binky Griptite & the Mellowmatics), or as a member of a full band (Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings). He is a guy who knows what music should sound like: raw, dirty, gritty and most of all, like it was recorded between 1967 and 1974. Why wouldn't he record a Christmas song (co-written by himself) in the vain of the old Soul review Holiday records? It just goes to show you that he does his homework, and I for one thank him for it. Think of this as the "Back Door Santa" of our generation. He pays tribute to these artists through his music, and there aren't a lot of people that can do it, and do it well.

This single is really an extension of this man's personality. His showmanship and love of true Funk and Soul shine through and while he spreads some holiday cheer on this 7". If I'm not mistaken, I can definitely hear the drumming of Homer ‘Funkyfoot’ Steinweiss on this track, and if he's on it, you know you have that back beat that's needed in a good Funky Soul side. This record is a slow groover, nice and sweet, delivering some yule tide goodies to all the Funk and Soul kiddies. If there is such a thing as a Stone Soul Christmas, I'm getting on a sleigh, hooking up my two dogs, and getting pulled to Bushwick because this sound is where it's at. See you midweek with some goodies and I promise to have another Christmas treat for you before the big day.

Now on any other Saturday night, I'd most likely be going through the day's record scores, making a mix, or just relaxing. On Saturday I get a phone call midday from Cool Hands Luke. He had a last minute cancellation for the Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings record release party at the Apollo Theater in Harlem NYC. Last minute cancellation, (how bad does that person feel?) I mean, if it is one show you see this year (besides the Bad Brains reunion tour), it's Sharon Jones at the Apollo. That's the pinnacle people, the Apollo. You play there well received, you get bragging rights, Period. We had third row orchestra left seats, and we could have seriously just reached out and would have been on stage. Not bad for a cancellation. Imagine my surprise too when I sat down in my seat, only to have a complete stranger say to me: "You're the guy from FleaMarket Funk!". Not only was I seeing a great show in one of the best places to see a Funk, Soul or Jazz band, but I end up meeting someone who actually reads this blog. Shout outs to Allen for schooling me on the finer points of Brasilian music. Obrigado.

The opener for Sharon was Seleno Clarke's Harlem Groove Band, featuring some really great players and Ian Hendrickson-Smith of the Dap Kings on tenor sax (who killed it!). Everyone knows I'm a sucker for the Hammond, and this band was definitely out of sight. Seleno hosts his Harlem Legacy Jam every Sunday night at The American Legion Hall located at 248 West 132nd St., New York. Sounds like a great time, they even have some home cooked meals. Looks like a FMF field trip might be in order.

With Binky Griptight leading the Daptone Soul Review and calling the shots JB style, and Bosco "Bass" Mann (aka super producer Gabriel Roth, yeah I said it, the guy is a genius) leading the band, the Dap Kings warmed the crowd up before Sharon took the stage. A special appearance by the one and only Lee Fields (complete with gheri-curl and sequin shirt) got the crowd even more hyped for the Queen of Funk to come out. When she did come out, the place went nuts. She jumped right into it, taking off her shoes and earrings to give us a taste of the dance party that was to come. The band itself (complete with a string section at times) was tight the whole night. She ran through a lot of old stuff: "Pick It Up, Lay It In The Cut", "How Do You Let A Good Man Down", and threw in some new stuff: "100 Days and 100 Nights", "Be Easy", "Let Them Knock", the show lasted close to two hours, and nobody, let me reiterate that point, nobody, was sitting down. The band paid a very fitting tribute to the man, the Godfather of Soul, Mr. Dynamite, the hardest working man in show biz, James Brown. Lee Fields rejoined her for a medly of JB tunes, and when Sharon sang "This is a Man's World" in tribute to her hometown fellow musician, it was heavy. I like Lee Fields, but I think by the end his enthusiasm was getting a bit much. I did see Gabriel Roth try to get Sharon to slow him down a bit during the medley, only to kind of laugh it off as Fields took off his jacket and did his best JB impression. He also did his hometown dance called the "Boweled Leg", which killed the crowd. Sharon had her choice of men to pull up and bump and grind, sing to, and even knock them off the stage at her whim. Most guys did not embarrass themselves with the exception of the dude that just about knocked Luke over as he was trying to grab Sharon's hand and get on stage. (Better luck next show Cool Hands) She pulled a b-boy type up (not once, but twice) who wooed her and definitely shined in his 15 minutes. The real star, however was Sharon Jones. From beginning to the end she danced, sang her ass off, and showed everyone in that Apollo Theater why she is the best female Funk/ Soul singer today. Last night, sitting at the Apollo, I realized something. Nobody makes music like this anymore. Nobody entertains like this anymore. Nobody except Daptone. For 12 years they have been doing things their way, working hard and paying dues. Now they finally did it their way, at the Apollo Theater. They may be stuck in the days of 2 inch tape, vintage sound boards, and vinyl records, but as Roth uttered this borrowed phrase on WNYC radio Saturday: "You can't roll a joint on an mp3.", I can't help think that the master of the vintage Funk and Soul sound out of Brooklyn is on to something.
