All right, I noticed that a lot of blogs are doing their 'best of 2008...so far' lists about now since we're half way through the year, so I'm gonna blindly follow suit. Well, maybe not so blindly, since I'm gonna allow you to share stuff that you got this year...but didn't necessarily have to have come out this year. But it can be new too. Whatever you want, because Sh*t L*sts are all about YOU!

So my list is probably gonna be a mix of new and old, cuz that's just where I'm at. Just click on through after the MGMT album pic below to see my list (which I'm starting to compile in my head as I write this), and then leave your list in comments.

O disco Consolers of the Lonely ficou excelente.

Escutem The Raconteurs.

Abraços.

Woah. Cryptic post title. Yeah. I think it’s time to add a few more albums to my running list

Woah. Cryptic post title. Yeah. I think it's time to add a few more albums to my running list of 2008 highlights.

Hercules and Love Affair (self-titled)

There was a time when I hated Antony and the Johnsons. Hated. My mind was completely unaccepting of Antony's vocals and bewildered at the praise their last album received. Then I started to soften, I gave the album a few chances (Antony and The Johnsons' I am a bird now). I don't know why, but over a period of at least twelve months I grew from disgust into utter infatuation. It is a masterpiece. And I finally appreciated Antony Hegardy's style for the genius that it is. Which is why I was so surprised that I didn't notice this album until it was out. Antony appearing on a dance album? Released by DFA (record label with a golden touch, and the American home of my beloved Hot Chip). The album is the work of a DJ named Andrew Butler, who I'd never heard of, and features Antony on literally every second track. And it is fucking brilliant. The most apt way to describe it would be to invoke the usually unmentionable 'disco' moniker. But musically, it's quite varied. Opener Time Will sets the scene early, with Antony's wail dominating by the end of the song. As my girlfriend's housemate Kiki exclaimed to me when I said I was putting on some 'disco'... "This isn't disco... it's afrobeat stuff!". Perhaps, but then the guitars seem almost flamenco. And Antony's presence indescribable. The next track is the real pleaser though. Hercule's Theme being one of the albums five (out of ten) songs not featuring Antony. Yet, it manages to be one of my favourite on the album. Amazingly punchy and upbeat, with a female vocalist and amazing sax work. The saxophone makes many welcome appearances on this album. It shows the album isn't dependent on Antony, and futher tracks only cement this point. It's just great music all 'round. The album peaks at single Blind. Which is oh so good. If the public had any sense this track would be the mainstream breakthrough that Gnarls Barkley's Crazy was last year. I could die.

DeVotchKa - A Mad and Faithful Telling

If you watched the wonderful movie Little Miss Sunshine (and lord knows i have several times) then you've already been introduced to this band, as they did the majority of the soundtrack. Musically, in my mind they're some glorious blend of Arcade Fire, Gorgol Bordello, Sufjan Stevens, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. But entirely unique in their own way. It's sort of gypsie meets indie rock meets something else. The vibrato heavy vocals are very very distinctive, and the instrumentation is lush and varied. In fact, I was laying in bed listening to this album a few nights ago when it dawned on me that the bass lines are almost entirely performed by what I assume is a fucking bassoon. Correct me if I'm wrong. All in all, a very heartfelt album with amazing amazing instrumentation. Totally in it's own league musically.

The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely

I can say without any hesitation Jack White is my favourite guitarist. He's forced me to change underpants more times than anyone else. Orgasmic. This album came out of nowhere. And this time not because I was out of the loop, but because allegedly they gave no word to their label about its creation... just slapped it down one day and said 'oh we made an album. release this bitch in a week'. Ok, maybe not an exact quote. But it was a nice surprise. Jack White is again joined by Brian Benson, and the rhythm section of The Greenhornes (who are a great blues band in their own right, check them out), but this is far far from a side project. It's well and truly it's own entity now. And it fucking rocks. If you can listen to the first two tracks without needing a change of pants than you are incontinent. As a bass player I may be biased, but holy zombie christ the bass tones on this album are so god damn ballsy. Gritty, dirty bass. Just how it should be. And with Jack's amazing guitar, precise and crunchy drums, and the one-two vocal attack of Jack and Brian (who in my opinion actually seem to be sounding more like each other these days). Musically, it branches out too. Not just dirty blues-rock, but with many surprises along the way. The highlight for me being the amazing fiddle parts in Old Enough. And there's plenty of great keyboard/organ parts throughout, also. And the fucking guitar, man.

Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple

And now the first of two albums produced by Danger Mouse. The man with the golden touch. Anyone responsible for the musical brilliance of Demon Days (by Gorillaz), The Grey Album (the Beatles v Jay-Z mash-up album that first brought him attention, both from music listeners and copyright lawyers), The Good, The Bad, and The Queen (by the Damon Albarn led band of the same name), and The Mask and The Mouse (his collaboration with one of my favourite rappers, MF Doom) deserves all your attention. But it's his collaboration with Cee-Lo as Gnarls Barkley that unexpectedly defined his career. Cee-Lo Green (the soul machine) has been around for quite a while, but never gained the mainstream attention that the musically similar Outkast did. Just a tad too weird, perhaps. But together, they are an unstoppable force. And this album is no different. Musically, it is still quite similar to their debut St Elsewhere. It is however lyrically darker (and I already loved their ability to bring self-deprecation into the mainstream music community littered with egos and aggressive masturbation over the microphone), at times more stripped back (such as on the standout track Who's Gonna Save My Soul?), yet at times way more busy (such as during bizzarre first single Run), and there are enough surprises to keep you hanging (the seemingly Celtic music inspired Going On, for example). In true DM style, the drums are amazing, the music is polished, and his trademarks are everywhere. If you liked their first, I can't see any reason you would love this.

The Black Keys - Attack & Release

The Black Keys have always been a great blues-rock band ripping it apart in the mid-fi arena. Not quite lo-fi, but way too gritty to be considered anywhere near the mainstream as far as production value is concerned. A guitar & drums band. Which is why it was so surprising to hear that the aforementioned Danger Mouse had been roped into producing this album. It's world colliding stuff here. The crisp, often simplistic style of DM clashing into the pure grit and gravel-rash of The Black Keys. But it WORKS. So well. I think the real key is that DM's presence is distinct, but still subtle. It's definitely the most polished sounding album of their career, but the dirt still remains. The gorgeous touches of DM do it wonders and expand their palette. His keyboard parts not overtaking, but wonderfully complimentary. See Psychotic Girl, for example. And the trademark vocal 'oohs' he seems to love. Basically, this unexpected collaboration seems to reflect amazingly well on both parties... two worlds working very well with each other. Far and away my favourite Black Keys release. And in true DM style, the drums seem crunchier too. If you're a fan of either, I would not miss this one. Now if only we can get him to produce a fucking Hives album. Oh yes please.

¿Cómo mejorar, en tu segundo disco, tu notable primer disco? Preguntale a Jack White.

Veremos dijo Lemos. Todavía falta. Pero sí que se esmeraron. E incluso, superaron lo anterior. Recomendable 100 por ciento.

We got news this morning that trumpet legend and good friend of NPT Wayne Jackson is on the new album by Nashville's own Raconteurs, Consolers of the Lonely, which debuted last week at number 7 on Billboard. You can hear Wayne's signature sound on tracks "The Switch & the Spur" and "Many Shades of Black." Wayne, of course, in addition to the many things he's done in his storied career, was one of the famous Memphis Horns on all those great Stax Records hits and a touring member of Otis Redding's band. Jackson joined us at the Belcourt Theatre last year when we screened "Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story."

Judas Priest after 2004 albums, Iron Maiden μετά το 2000).

Το Consolers Of The Lonely δεν το έχω ακούσει ακόμα αρκετά. Οτι θα είναι για τρείς βδομάδες στα most played στο last.fm το ξέρω.

The Raconteurs - Consolers Of The Lonely - XL Recordings - 2008

De los segundos: “The Switch And The Spur” y “Five On The Five”.

I like Jack White, but not the White Stripes. Does that make any sense?

Love the way he plays and sings but I just never got past the whole White Stripes shtick. I liked Jack White in theory, but disliked his execution. This was one of the many reasons why I LOVED the first Raconteurs record Broken Boy Soldiers. It had all the elements that I like about Jack White soulful vocals, great melodies and some kicks ass classic rock guitar. It didn't sound much like the White Stripes and there was a definite delineation between White's songs and that of fellow singer/songwriter Brendan Benson. All of these things made the first record pretty amazing.

Unfortunately these are also the same reasons why the Raconteurs sophomore fails to live up to the promise of Broken Boy Soldiers. The majority of Consolers of the Lonely to me sounds too much like the White Stripes with a bass player. The riffs, the drums and even Brendan Benson's vocals have seemed to have been enveloped by the idea that Jack White of the White Stripes is in their band whereas before it sounded like they were a band with separate but equal parts.

Funny thing, it took till the 12th track (a cover of Terry Reid's Rich Kids Blues) for me to think "Alright, this really is a Raconteurs record". I don't think this to be coincidental, the fact that it took the records sole cover song to remind me what I really like about this band. Jack White's talent lent to a song that didn't sound like his other group.

BTW: I am not even going to pretend to have ever heard much about Terry Reid. I do have to say he has an interesting history. Back in the day a young guitarist named Jimmy Page asked him to be the singer for his new musical project The New Yardbirds. He turned it down, the job eventually went to Robert Plant and the group renamed themselves "Led Zeppelin".

The Raconteurs debut album, "Broken Boy Soldiers", was one of the best albums of 2006. Their second album, "Consolers Of The Lonely", is nothing like their first. Much like the first single from the album, "Salute Your Solution", it is very herky-jerky with lots of starts and stops.

First of all, The Raconteurs amps must go up to 11 for sure because the power chords on the majority of the album are cranked. This is as loud or louder than any guitars you heard on "Soldiers" or any White Stripes album. For me, it's a little distracting sometimes. The song "Hold Up" is immediately skipped every time I get to it. I just can't handle the obnoxious power chords on it, "Five On The Five" or the title track. It's odd but when Jack White breaks out the heavy guitar, it turns me right off on this album.

My favorite tracks on this album are the quieter ones. My favorite song on the album is the last track "Carolina Drama". It's got that Americana sound complete with fiddle and a vivid story painted by Jack's lyrics. "Old Enough" also has an Americana feel with that same fiddle and organ. I also like the two songs ("You Don't Understand Me" & "Many Shades Of Black") that really give the other guitarist/vocalist Brendan Benson some time to shine.

Overall, as painful as it is to say, this is really a Jack White guitar album. He really dominates here when he sounded more like a band member on "Broken Boy Soldiers". My expectations for this album may have been too high that I am inevitably disappointed but it just feels like something is missing. At 14 songs, it may actually be too lengthy and if they trimmed out three or four songs, you would have a much smoother sounding album.

Jack White and Brenden Benson's part-time band, The Raconteurs, gives rock and roll a swift kick in the ass with Consolers of the Lonely, and proves that there really is good music left to hear. Your iPod is not surprised. Audiobomb is. Hit the jump for the full review.

The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely

I’m going to say something that might seem a little controversial; something that may seem like a belligerent nose-thumbing to the music critic community. Here it goes:

The White Stripes suck.

There. I said it, but hear me out. It’s not that their music is without merit, because they continue to be one of the most enigmatic and fresh bands in the musical landscape today. I say such definitive statements because of Jack White’s insistence to keep a certain rhythmically deficient young lady around, whose charming lack of skill does nothing for his songs other than make the listener long for a day when he’d get together with real musicians and make some real music.

The Raconteurs were the realization of that dream… almost. Their first album, Broken Boy Soldiers, was raucous and mean, but it lacked that megaton punch you expect from such a project and ultimately felt rushed, unfinished and unfocused. It’s a good thing the band went back to the studio as 2008 has its first great rock album.

White and Brendan Benson, who both share vocals, guitar and songwriting duties, offer a great counterpoint to their individual strengths. Benson has a very Paul McCartney kind of sensibility to his swelling vocal refrains on tracks like the dreamy “You Don’t Understand Me,” to balance out White’s rip-roaring assault. White’s country-western fetish, which is in full effect on “Carolina Drama” and “Top Yourself,” sharply contrasts the Phil Spector Wall of Sound of “Many Shades of Black,” and the hipster rock of “Attention.” Consolers of the Lonely somehow feels complete, though, even as White and Benson play with the many shades of Rock and Roll. It’s a high-wire balancing act full of hand-claps, high-gain distortion, acoustic guitars and the occasional synthesizer.

When the two artists get together, though, it’s twice as sweet. The opening track, “Consoler of the Lonely,” and its follow up, “Salute your Solution,” are packed full of biggest 70’s arena-rock hooks and put to shame throwback bands like the Black Crowes. Whites’ guitar work retains that raw, uncontained intensity even while rattling around inside the tighter, more melodic songs. His solo in “Hold Up” is a marked highlight.

I can’t decide if it would be better for the members of The Raconteurs to quit their full-time bands or if what makes the band so exciting is the fact that it’s a passion-project for all involved. Either way, Consolers of the Lonely is exactly what rock music needed. A loud, brash, well put challenge for rock bands everywhere to step it up. I, for one, hope more than a few bands heed the call.

Jack White has done some crazy shit. Prided playing one-note shows in Canada, possibly marrying his sister and going through phases of wearing nothing but white, red and black, he surprised the media and fans alike by releasing a follow-up to The Raconteurs' highly successful first album, Broken Boy Soldiers, without any notice.

Available today, Consolers of the Lonely follows the latest trend in the music industry. More and more artists are cutting out the companies and getting the music directly to their fans. In the footsteps Radiohead and Trent Reznor with their "pay what you think it's worth" experiment, such an abrupt release doesn't give reviewers any advantage over the listeners - an interesting idea.

I was expecting a lot from The Raconteurs sophomore release. The crazy offstage is mirrored in the crazy onstage; Broken Boy Soldiers is one of my all-time favorite recordings. With these heavy expectations, I enjoyed Consolers. I remember being more impressed after hearing the first album but that may be because the only changes between the two aren't much more than a fiddle and the occasional femme backup. Consolers of the Lonely is a solid piece; dark, powerful and bluesy enough to remind me why The Racontuers is not only Jack White, but modern rock at its best.

Logo, a voz de Brendan Benson, que divide o front com Jack White, lamentando: "Haven't seen the sun in weeks / My skin is getting pale / Haven't got a mind left to speak / And I'm skinny as a rail ... I'm bored to tears".

["Salute Your Solution"]

Metais ainda ressoarem por "The Switch And The Spur", enquanto Jack White nos conta aventuras passadas "in the heat of the desert sun" [essa verve storyteller volta para encerrar o disco, com "Carolina Drama"].

Aumente o volume e clique no play:

See ya!
