Once upon a time, it was a quiet afternoon. Dh was at Costco, and my daughters were reading, napping, just hanging out in their room. Older ds was at his friend's house.

Then...

BAM.

High-pitched screaming. Banging. Yelling. More banging.

Peace. Tranquility. Quiet. Gone.

Ds quickly made his way downstairs and it escalated. He went into a rage like I've not seen him do in weeks. Don't get me wrong, he gets mad still and has his meltdowns and tantrums, but this was worse than any in a while. It took a while to get him into the crying stage, beyond the screaming stage, through the throwing everything he could grab stage, beyond self-injurious stage, and completely past the hurting mommy stage. At one point, he lunged me from beyond and jumpd on my back and head like a crazy monkey from a bad, b-grade movie. It took older dd to get him off my back, with me prying his hands out of my hair. My glasses made it out unscathed, because I'm good at ducking but mainly because I tossed them off in the 4-seconds dd held him after she got him off my back. And no marks!

He's out front playing football with dh, after a while of self-constructed O.T. spinning on the swing out back. He's not going to be on the computer again until Wednesday -- that's a computer exile because the reason for his meltdown was that the computer had some issue in the midst of him playing it.

Life is good.

“But dad, he started it,” the small boy pouted as he pointed at his older brother, “he threw the sponge at me.” There was a large wet patch on the front of his t-shirt where soapsuds soaking into the cotton.

“Mark, is that true?” He asked, turning to his other son.

“Kinda,” the fourteen-year-old said guiltily scratching his head and smiling.

“In that case,” he said smiling in return, “then it is the decision of this court that the punishment be a ritual soaking.” He turned to younger brother who was gleefully smiling. “Mr Henderson, please carry out the sentence on behalf of the court.” Ryan quickly picked up the bucket, and with an evil grin on his face, threw the contents at Mark. The older boy gasped as the tepid soapy water struck him in the chest, soaking him.

“I’ll get you for that,” Mark said in mock-threat, chasing Ryan. The two brothers ran across the grass towards the back door, Mark finding it difficult to keep up with his younger brother. Ryan’s escape route was barred as the back door was opened and their mother stood their holding a tray of buns, uncooked beef burgers and sausages. Ryan darted to the side but Mark caught up with him, pulling the small boy into a headlock.

“That’s enough you two,” their dad said as their mum put the tray down next to the barbecue. “Remember our deal guys, no barbecue until you wash the car.”

“Awwww,” Ryan whined.

“Come on you,” Mark said grabbing Ryan’s hood and almost lifting his little brother of the floor, “we got a car to rinse and I’m starving.” The small boy yelped as he was dragged through side gate back to the driveway. Just a few minutes later, the sounds of squeals could be heard from the driveway.

Paul and Tracy looked at each other. “Hosepipes,” they said simultaneously.

Out front, the two brothers sprayed each other with the hoses, drenching themselves and the car. Thoroughly soaked, they turned their hoses back on the car and washed off the soapsuds. Mark noticed that his brother has hopping from foot to foot leaning on his tiptoes. “Do you need the toilet or something?”

Ryan nodded, “Uh huh, I gotta go bad.”

“Well,” Mark said rolling his eyes, “you’re a big boy now; you don’t need permission or anything to have a piss.” Ryan dropped his hose and ran into the house. Mark couldn’t help but squirt his hose at the ground just behind his brother’s feet, chasing him up the path. After finishing washing the car, ¬
Mark went into the back garden where his dad had already started the barbecue and first batch of burgers were on the grill. After a few minutes, the sizzling slabs of meat were ready. With a rumbling stomach, he greedily tucked into the first off the grill.

“Where’s your brother?” His mum asked as she drenched one of the burgers in ketchup, just the way Ryan liked it.

“He’s on the toilet,” he said with a mouthful of meat.

“Hmm, the toilet flushed five minutes ago,” she said looking up at the closed bathroom window. “Could you go and check on him?” Mark started to protest but his mother’s expression warned him that it probably wouldn’t be a good idea.

Grumbling, he got out of the garden chair and tromped across the garden and into the house. He had a good idea where Ryan had gotten to and as he approached the top of the stairs, he realised that he was right. Mark crept quietly up to his bedroom door, avoiding all the floorboards that creaked. A skill he had developed sneaking out at night without alerting his parents. Peering around the doorframe Mark saw his brother sitting at the foot of Mark’s bed holding a skateboard and playing with its wheels. Mark stepped into the doorway, leant against the frame and cleared his throat. Ryan stood up quickly, dropping the skateboard.

“Mark! I was just ... er ...” Ryan stammered guiltily. Despite how close the two brothers were, Ryan knew that Mark didn’t like people being in his room uninvited.

“You’ve been eyein’ my board for the last three weeks,” Mark said interrupting him. Ryan looked at the floor, his hands fiddling with the bottom of his t-shirt. “Guess I better teach you how to use it properly before you break your neck.”

Ryan looked back up, a hopeful look on his face. “You mean it?” Mark nodded. Ryan’s face lit up and the small boy threw himself at Mark and hugged him. “Thank you thank you thank you,” he said repeatedly. Mark lifted his little brother into a piggyback and started downstairs.

“Come on squirt, dinner first.”

Seven years later...

Mark rubbed the stubble on his chin and looked down at the photo of his brother. It had been taken through a telephoto lens and it showed him skating along, headphones on and school bag on his back oblivious to the fact that was being watched. The photo brought back memories from when he had decided to teach his little brother how to skate. Ryan had taken to it like a monkey to bananas. He put the photo down and looked at the others. One showed his brother sitting on a packed boat with a hundred other teenagers wearing life jackets. Another photo showed him sitting on a wall with a group of friends enjoying an ice cream cone in the hot sun. Over a dozen photos had been taken over the previous week. Most of them were of his brother but a few were detail shots of his friends and foster family showing everyone important in his brother’s life.

“You did good work,” he said to the man across the table from him. They were sitting in a dingy back alley pub in the East End of London; the type of pub where shady deals could be made with fear of questions being asked. The poor lighting and loud music masking any such deals being made.

The man took a sip from his pint. “You paid me well.”

“So,” Mark said putting the photos back on the table, “apart from these what else did my money get?”

“Quite a lot actually,” the man said smirking. He reached under the table, pulled a folder out of his bag, and placed it on the table. When the man opened it, Mark could see that it was full of official looking documents. “If you know the right people and have enough money, you can learn a lot about anyone.”

“Like what?”

The man shuffled through the papers, picking out the key points. “Well, the kid’s had it rough the last few years. Lost his family in a home invasion in 2004, probably where he got that scar on his neck. Spent a while in hospital afterwards before being put into care. In 2005, he was back in hospital after a failed suicide attempt.”

“Suicide?” Mark said looking up from the papers.

“Er ... first time with foster parents. By all accounts not exactly the role model type. Viewed their foster kids as a source of government cheques by all accounts. It happened a year to the day after the death of his family. No support at home, bullied like heck at his new school, he tried to hang himself but was found before it was too late. As it was, he was already unconscious when they cut him down. Foster parents dumped him back on social services as soon as he was out of hospital.”

“Harsh,” Mark said although inwardly he was cursing. If only that help had been a few minutes slower.

“Yeah, anyway, he’s had seven foster families in four years, failing at school ...” The part about his brother failing at school piqued Mark’s interest. The Ryan he remembered was smart, even at just ten-years-old he’d stood out at primary school. “... was in a car accident a couple of months ago. Took a header into the bay but didn’t suffer any major injuries. Ran away from home last month, but was only gone for a day.”

Mark blinked, impressed at the depth of information the man had discovered. “Anything else.”

“Well, despite having more reason than most kids his age to go off the rails, he’s managed to keep his nose clean. Well, except for the fact that he’s got a few secrets.” He passed a fuzzy black and white photo. Unlike the others, it had been taken at night using a low-light camera. In the centre of the frame, Mark could just make out his brother climbing down the drainpipe outside his bedroom window. “Took this night before last. Don’t know where he went but he was gone a couple of hours.”

Mark smiled. “Used to do that myself when I was your age,” he said quietly, barely audible above the booming music. He cleared his throat and shuffled through the papers and photos. “Here’s what I owe you,” he said taking a fat brown envelope from inside his jacket. The man opened the envelope and quickly counted the stack of used notes within.

Satisfied, the man picked up his coat and bag. “If you need anything else Jim, you’ve got my number.” The man left the pub. A few moments after he had left, another man walked over from the bar and sat down opposite Mark.

“I take it you heard everything Seth?” Mark asked not looking up.

Seth smirked, his lips parting to reveal a set of fangs. He looked down the photos, picking one of them up. “This him? Good looking kid, what he do to piss you off?”

“You think you can handle him?” Mark asked him impatiently.

Seth leafed through the papers. “Sure thing, he’s just a kid right? No funky powers or shit?” Mark nodded. “Then he should be a pushover.”

“Good. This ritual you want as payment is difficult. Giving a vampire immunity to sunlight ‘aint like slapping on factor 500 sun block. It’s going to take a considerable amount of mojo to pull it off and I don’t want to be wasting my time on some fang banger who can’t deal with one 14-year-old kid.”

The vampire laughed. “Like I said, no worries.”

“Anyway,” Mark said not entirely convinced, “just get your arse down to circle on Friday night for the first part of ritual.”

“First part?” Seth said interrupting.

“Yeah, the first part. I’m not going to give you permanent immunity until you deliver my brother to me alive and in one piece. Until then, you get 24 hours cumulative immunity.”

“Fair enough.” Seth put the photos and papers into the file and stood up. “You better be on the level though. I know you got a rep in the scene and all, but you screw me on this deal and it’ll be you that ends up dead.” The vampire walked out of the pub and into the night. Mark waited a few minutes before taking a photo out of his jacket pocket. It was the one of his little brother skating along. He looked at it intently as he finished his pint.

He played on a few things - the see saw, the monkey bars (he was so proud when he climbed to the top! :) ). He queued up to the slide...of course giving way to all the kids who pushed their way in :) Then I told him let us just walk around the park. He agreed...and then I gave him the go ahead to run around. On the walk way were puddles of water. It had rained the previous day and all morning. At first sight of the puddles, A stopped, turned around. When I egged him on, he just went amok :D Ran through the water puddles. I followed him at first walking. Then, as we kept going round and round the place, I found myself running behind him. Saw other parents asking their kids not to step onto the puddles, the adults themselves avoiding the water, some onlookers looking at A and me as if we had gone mad shaking their heads in that characteristic disbelief. I just looked at the joy in A's face. It just lit up with happiness. He would stop by the small waterfall on the side. Point to it asking if he could wade in, then proceed. Two times around, he stopped and said "Amma, waterfall. We cannot go in" and then went on running. Not a care about what others were going to think. As I started running behind him, I realised I did not care either. The world was just me and A. How it was then, and how it probably will be for a long time. I got the much needed (and something I have been procastinating) exercise. We both were wet because of the water puddles and sweat :) We were tired but a lot happier than when we had left "home".

I guess I needed that more than A ever did. A lesson that we have only each other and we should make the most of each moment. Back here in the confines of the four walls, I am back with resentment; waiting to break free...run around in the water puddles with abandon. Live life with my son not wonder when my papers would come for me to sign, when I am going to get a job, when A & I will have a place to call home,whether I would be able to take care of A's every need...

Guess I should be thankful for that couple of hours of respite from reality. I hope A grows up with the same sense of abandon. Let not reality ever strike him. Let him be oblivious to the stares and words of others which he will have to hear.

FO's include a pair of socks for my niece Billy.  Then a hat for my mother.

The yarn used is Regia Silk, which is lovely and soft.  I did my own design with a reinforced toe and heel as they are for a child.  They took one skein exactly, I had about 4"s left, must admit I was sweating a bit, that I would have enough, I do have a skein in my stash, but it would have been a shame to use it just to finish of the toe.

The yarn used was Kwiknit by King Cole Aran/10ply which is a mixture of Acrylic and Wool, the needles used were size 5mm.  The pattern is called Corenet and is designed by Alexandra Virgiel from the Knitty Site Winter 2003 it is free to download in pdf form.

I have cast on the Smoke Ring that I found on Ravelry.com called Ice Queen.  I had a skein of Fiddlesticks Knitting Zephyr Laceweight Wool-silk, in my stash which seemed ideal, I had made a shawl some time ago, last year in fact, note to myself to take some pictures of it.   Anyhow it is designed by Rosemary Hill and again is available free on Knitty.com.  I have some beads, so away I have gone, done about 3" so far and am pleased with the effect. 

But, you know what dad? I didn't know better. Here I am now isolated in my computer room with Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit screaming out of my Instinct, followed by the Subway's Oh Yeah. Its funny because the only song I can hear is Creep by Radiohead.

They're dressed like twins and look to be the same age.  Twins?  Not sure.  But they'e cute.

ISTANBUL, October 10 (Compass Direct News) – An Egyptian Coptic Christian woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for failing to uphold her Islamic identity – an identity she didn’t know she had for over four decades.

Sisters Shadia and Bahia Nagy El-Sisi, both in their late 40s and residents of the small east Delta town Mit-Ghamr, were arrested and tried for claiming their official religious identity as Christian. Unknown to them, their religious identity officially changed 46 years ago due to their father’s brief conversion to Islam. Both are illiterate.

Shadia El-Sisi was tried for stating her religion as Christian on her marriage certificate and sentenced to three years in prison on Nov. 21, 2007. She was released two months later. Last Sept. 23 a judge also sentenced Bahia El-Sisi to three years in prison for “forging” her marriage certificate by stating her religion as Christian.

Their father, Nagy El-Sisi, converted to Islam in 1962 during a brief marital dispute in order to divorce his wife and potentially gain custody of his daughters, the sisters’ lawyer Peter Ramses told Compass.

Egyptian law is influenced by Islamic jurisprudence (sharia), which automatically awards child custody to whichever parent has the “superior” religion and dictates “no jurisdiction of a non-Muslim over a Muslim.”

If Bahia El-Sisi’s identity as a Muslim stands, then her religious status could potentially create a domino effect that would require her husband to convert to Islam or have their marriage nullified. Her children, too, would be registered as Muslims. Both women are married to Christians.

“All of their children and grandchildren would be registered as Muslims,” Ramses said. “[The ruling] would affect many people.”

Other sources said it is too soon to determine the fate of the sisters’ marriages and families, as neither of their cases have been finalized.

‘But I Am a Christian’

A few years after his conversion, Nagy El-Sisi returned to his family and Christianity. He sought the help of a Muslim employee in the Civil Registration Office, Ramadan Muhammad Hussein, who agreed to forge his Christian identification documents. Reversion back to Christianity for converts to Islam has been nearly impossible in Egyptian courts.

The daughters discovered they were still registered as Muslims when Hussein was arrested for forgery in 1996 and confessed he had helped El-Sisi obtain fake documents three decades earlier. El-Sisi was later arrested.

When the two daughters visited him in prison, they were detained and accused of forging their Christian identification documents, according to national weekly Watani. A criminal court gave them each a three-year prison sentence in absentia in 2000.

Shadia El-Sisi was arrested in August 2007, three days before her son’s wedding. Her first hearing was on Nov. 21, 2007 at the Shobra El-Khema criminal court; she asserted that she had no idea of her so-called conversion to Islam. Judge Hadar Tobla Hossan sentenced her to three years in prison.

Confronted with the sentence, Shadia El-Sisi kept repeating, “But I am a Christian. I am a Christian,” according to Watani.

She was in prison until Jan. 13, when Prosecutor-General Abdel Meged Mahmood retracted the sentence because she was unaware of her conversion by proxy and due to legal technicalities that voided incriminating evidence.

The advocacy group Egyptians Against Religious Discrimination also pressured the judiciary through a signature drive to release her from prison.

Bahia El-Sisi went into hiding following her sister’s imprisonment, but came out after news of her release. Legal experts believe that when Bahia El-Sisi’s case comes before the Supreme Court, her sentence will be retracted as her sister’s was, as their cases have no legal foundation.

Early in the morning of May 5, however, police arrested Bahia El-Sisi and held her in jail until her hearing on July 20, after which she was released pending the verdict.

On Sept. 23 she was sentenced to three years in prison for “forgery of an official document,” as her marriage license states her religion as “Christian.” Bahia El-Sisi was married years before learning of her father’s brief conversion.

Ramses will appeal to Egypt’s Supreme Court in next week. He said he worries the case could further erode the precarious situation of religious minorities in the Muslim-majority country of 79 million.

“How can the government say to [someone] who has lived 50 years in a Christian way that they must become a Muslim and their children must be Muslim and their whole family must all be Muslims?” he said. “This is very important for the freedom of religion.”

Egypt’s constitution guarantees freedom of belief and practice for the country’s Christian minority, which makes up 10 percent of the population. Islam, however, is the official state religion and heavily influences the government and court system.

The case is an example of the social pressure put on Egyptian non-Muslims to convert when one of their parents embraces Islam, despite the constitution guaranteeing equality, said Youssef Sidhom, editor-in-chief of Watani.

“This is a sick environment that we struggle to change,” Sidhom stated. “According to what is taking place here freedom is protected and provided for Christians to convert to Islam while the opposite is not provided.”

Egyptian courts have continued to discriminate against Christians who have one Muslim parent, according to human rights reports, as the judiciary gives them no choice but to convert to Islam.

On Sept. 24 an Alexandria court awarded custody of 14-year-old Christian twins to their Muslim father even though the twins said they were Christians who wanted to stay with their mother. Egyptian civil law grants child custody to their mothers until the age of 15.

Excuses for the win. Anywho, I watched. LAST WEEK. Not on YouTube :)

It was a great debate. Very informative, and... I think Jack Layton did a really good job. I loved how Stephen Harper initiated the attack on the Liberal campaign and Stephane Dion; then all of a sudden the other four party leaders completely blasted Harper and the Conservatives for their failure of a government for the past two years. I believe they were right on.

Another thing I believe is that the Conservatives are more and more like the Republicans of the States. Harper and the Conservatives as of yet do not understand the Carbon Tax. I actually got the Liberal campaign booklet and read everything on the Carbon Tax, through every detail and what Dion says was spot on. Although in my last post on the election I said the Carbon Tax was quite useless; I have seen the light! It is a great method to punish those who are to hurt our environment and give back to the people as another benefit. I hope the Conservatives understand this.

Now, another thing I need to add is that... WOW! I am so surprised about Elizabeth May and her Green Party's platform. It's quite amazing I must say. I thought as a special interest party environment and a few other things were all the Green Party had, but to my constant undisputed belief; the Green Party had a lot to offer the average Canadian and Elizabeth May fought on par with all the other party leaders. If I had a second party to vote for other than the NDP, it would be the Green Party all the way.

I found the Bloc Quebecois leader Gille Duceppe quite... How should I say, useless. Although he was right about many things, he just seemed like he was unnecessary on the debate table. Though I found him to say that he would never become Prime Minister an admirable thing. At least he knows where he stands and does not act as if he could topple over all other parties with what there is available to the Bloc at this moment.

Now, Harper just got attacked throughout the debate. Of course he is the current government and that is to be expected; but in such an incredulous amount? That I don't think so. I think Harper and the Conservatives deserved every attack aimed at them. Canada has fallen into deficit and dropped out of one of the best Kyoto protocols and even entered Afghanistan and the Conservatives had the nerve to cut funds to the arts! The arts a major thing to the Canadian people, and the defence or "repair" of Afghanistan was not an interest Canada was so strong to pursue. Canada to many Canadians, myself included has faced away from it's peaceful presence in the world.

The Conservatives have offered no plan for the next government and  the people are completely lost about the Conservatives. I am appalled to see many die-hard Conservatives tell me that they're just voting on what the last government was about. I believe Harper should understand what responsibilities he really has. Just because  you cut 95, 000 jobs and created 100, 000 is nothing to be proud of. The 95, 000 lost were high paying, good jobs to raise a family on and live a good life. The 100, 000 are labour jobs by working at minimum wage. Harper relied on this so much during the debate, and I was so greatly angered by him just praying on this argument. I don't think he knows exactly what it's like to lose a good job and try to find one on par with the last. Another thing is that the new offenders act by Harper is disgusting. Fourteen year olds should NOT spend life in prison with adults. That is conflicting of the rights of a child.

Only one big thought on the Liberals. I like their campaign a lot; and pragmatically, they have fed off very well from the other parties to improve themselves for today's day and age. But Stephane Dion as the leader is something I do not like. Yes, he is strong in French, but during the debate I could not fully make out whatever he was saying. I think if he wants to see himself as Prime Minister, he needs to improve on his English language skills and better communication with his ideas as I don't think he can speak of them so well as he should. This might be mean, but guys, this is a candidate for the highest position in our country.

Hehehe... Time to comment on my NDP! Jack Layton! I think he might just cut being a good Prime Minister. It seems over the years he has his platform well memorized and it is very beneficial to the average Canadian. His attacks on the Conservatives were very well done. Why? Because he backed it up with what the NDP would do in exchange. I love the health care plan to get more doctors. It is something stolen  from Cuba, but then again, if it worked in Cuba, then surely of course, it would work in Canada. The CMA is greatly diminishing potential doctors and it is time to get those oldies to realize that public healthcare is the way to go. Private healthcare is not in the interest of Canada.

The debate was very good, and I wish it was longer. Eight questions were not enough. Especially when immigration was not tackled at all; I think this is a major issue that should have been questioned.

1. "Rhapsody in Blue" performed by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra; composed by George Gershwin- Believe it or not, I really am eclectic. Truly eclectic. Not 'hipster eclectic', which is when people listen to obscure but awful bands that no one's heard of because they're just god-awful. Not 'rocker eclectic', where people to a ton of alternarock and a little bit of other stuff, but not enough of everything else to balance out how much rock they listen to. Eclectic meaning I can listen to Shapes of Racecars and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and Day 26 back to back to back without having a heart attack. I first fell in love with this song when I heard it performed by a saxaphonist (I know! A sax! it was amazing) at band camp. This song is worth the time (17 minutes). It never stops capturing you. It just keeps going. Sorry about the old-school link; I could not find the Saint Louis Orchestra version, so this will have to do.
2. "Sound the Alarm" by Shapes of Racecars- This song wakes me up. For some reason, I just cant take my mind off this song. It's a great rock song, complete with awesome rock vocals, some great work on the guitar, and, yes, an alarm. I guess the alarm is what really brings the song together.
3. "Love for a Child" by Jason Mraz- To be honest, I only really understood what he was talking about when the song approached the chorus, but this is a very personal song. I think everyone knows the feeling of being ignored, which is part of the reason of why I love this song. It has depth, that most modern songs intentionally lack.
4. "You, Me and the Bourgeoisie" by The Submarines- Me and this song; what an ordeal. I downloaded it a while back, when the Submarines were featured on Free Radio, and when they started showing the iPhone commercials, I could not put my finger on the song. Then I was looking through my iPod, and I stumbled upon this song, and was instantly epiphanized. This is a gorgeous song. I absolutely love the simple-alternarock vibe the song gives off, which is exactly the reason why it was on an iPhone commercial (whomever chooses those songs, I need your job. Now.)
5. "Soap Disco" by Kara's Flowers (aka Old Maroon 5 minus James Valentine and, you know, taste)- So, I don't care that Kara's Flowers was the awkward and confused stage of Maroon 5. I could not care less; this song was awesome. It's perky, upbeat, and just great. Maroon 5, if you ever read this, Kara's Flowers wasn't that bad. It just wasn't as evolved/amazing as Maroon 5. <3
6. *I am Six Pounds of Dynamite* by South San Gabriel- I decided to add this song because it randomly came on my iPod, and I'd never heard it before (it does make sense that I have 1500 songs on my iPod... don't judge me...), and it pretty much put me to sleep. The harmonic vocals and perfect bass on this song is what put me to sleep. The fact that the band was names after a style of Italian accordian and the name of the song is what makes listening to this lullaby even sweeter.

Tyler is a video game addict. XBOX, PLAYSTATION, GAMEBOY, you name it, he's addicted to it. While it may not appear so when you see the 9,000 games he has in his collection, my wife and I do try to "screen" the games that he receives or buys. Any game that is rated MATURE is strictly off-limits along with games that have excessive violence, sex, language, or gambling elements. Tyler, gaming expert that he is, knows how to make even the worst of the games sound tame enough for a toddler to enjoy. After years of pulling the wool over our eyes, we now have a better idea of Tyler's ideas of what constitutes adult themes thanks to a game he bought a few weeks ago. This game is called "Destroy all Humans" and involves aliens killing everyone and blowing everything up. We were apprehensive about the game because it was rated "T" for Teen and indicated that it had violence, sexual themes, and mild language. Of course, being the Idiots we are, we let him buy it after he assured us everything was "tame" on the game.

The other day I am sitting and watching Tyler play this game. He is skillfully killing all humans and blowing everything up when his aliens little ray gun runs out of death ray. Tyler moves his alien over the top of a dead body and then places the gun by the bodies head. Green waves come out of the corpses head. "What are you doing?" I ask. "I'm sucking his brains out to reload my gun", Tyler states in an almost embarrassed tone. He turns beet red and looks at me and then whispers....."That's the Sexual Violence Dad!"

I find I am photographing children more and more. I am drawn to their faces and their surroundings. I look to show the connection between the two, between the expressions you see in my images and where they live. This is not so say the children I have photographed do not laugh and play. They do that also. But at the same time there is a reserved nature to what I witness. Tatiana, one of Cati's granddaughters, was standing off on her own as a large crowed began to gather at the cooperative living site where she lives with her six siblings (7th on the way), mother and father, Cati and her husband (11 people in the house). The crowd was there to celebrate the construction, already underway, of what will eventually be 33 apartments for the poor. Currently however, only a handful of families share a cavernous, warehouse-style space - cold, damp, and poorly lit. When I first met Tati she and her siblings were somewhat shy, but warmed up to me quickly and I left with a pocketful of drawings to hang on my wall - hearts, houses, and a portrait of me with a camera and glasses on my head. Today, however, she was shy and not open to speaking much. I didn't see the rest of the kids much either. The photo to the right is Tati half-hiding behind a piece of plywood, propped up to use as a wall around an outside patio. Her backyard is a construction site.

If the traditional definition of marriage is the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law, when was the union of two people, of the same sex, added to this definition?  It doesn't make any sense to me.

I can think of 2 people in my family involved in this kind of activity, but it's not something I condone.  I was taught growing up in the "church" that marriage was a privilege a man and a woman held that cemented their promise of obligation toward each other.  It's like two pieces of a puzzle that just fit.  I am of that generation where everyone decided to "come out."  I don't want to see all that!  It's a sickness to me and I would prefer we were still in my grandparent's day where you just stayed in the closet.  Way back in the darkest part of the closet.  We were meant to procreate.  It's the natural order of things.

That's why it's very important that a child is either raised by both parents, or surrounded by caring adults, male and female.  It's not normal for a male child to be influenced by his mother alone.  I was a single parent, but made sure my sons were influenced by my brothers, uncles, father and cousins.  I can't teach a boy to be a man.  Only a man can.
