Each episode of DJ Marky's podcast is about 45 minutes long and features eclectic mixes interspersed with occasional talking, most of which is in Portuguese. New episodes are few and far between, and even now after 2 years there are only 12 episodes. Luckily, the mixes have a lot of relistenability. Even the casual Drum n' Bass fan is sure to find something worth liking.

For some reason, you actually can not get DJ Marky's podcast in iTunes and his website is even a bit odd as well. However, to subscribe drag this .xml code into your iTunes.

There is a lot to talk about.

The blue and gray tones of Brazilian agate can swirl into a multitude of patterns and images.  All of these hues came from a solitary stone weighing approximately one ounce.

Geoff McRae, ex-Bayleys in Auckland, popped up on my screen today from Buenos Aires, where it seems he moved 4 years ago, setting upGateway to South America: “Gateway was conceived back in 2003, when it became obvious to a number of intending investors that the assistance one takes for granted in most western countries was not readily available in South America. Because there is little consumer protection available to investors, the only safeguard they have is to choose the right professionals to deal with. Gateway has created a funnel that attracts foreign investors and introduces them to companies & professional individuals that 
we believe will best serve the investors interests.” Mr McRae, president of the Gateway business and its sales & marketing director, started investing in Argentina 4 years ago buying residential & rural assets. Finding success, he more recently started introducing other New Zealand & English-speaking clients to the opportunity to also invest in South America.”

As usual, I arrived at the Gateway website by a circuitous route. It began when I opened my daily email from Daily Reckoning, the bearish finance & economic website created by Bill Bonner, a very international American (from Baltimore, lives in Paris, tried living in London, was early to invest in the coast of Nicaragua, now has a ranch up in the hills in the north-west of Argentina), who doesn’t believe the US Federal Reserve has been doing a remotely sensible job – creating a housing boom to stop the country going into recession, watching it get out of hand, and now taking panicky measures such as Friday’s ½% cut of the discount rate.

I’d just read 2 Fed releases before hitting the Daily Reckoning ramble. In the first, the Fed said: “Financial market conditions have deteriorated and tighter credit conditions & increased uncertainty have the potential to restrain economic growth going forward. In these circumstances, although recent data suggest that the economy has continued to expand at a moderate pace, the federal open market committee judges that the downside risks to growth have increased appreciably. The committee is monitoring the situation and is prepared to act as needed to mitigate the adverse effects on the economy arising from the disruptions in financial 
markets.”

In the other release, the Fed said: “To promote the restoration of orderly conditions in financial markets, the Federal Reserve Board approved temporary changes to its primary credit discount window facility. The board approved a 50 basis point reduction in the primary credit rate to 5.75%, to narrow the spread between the primary credit rate and the Federal open market committee's target federal funds rate to 50 basis points. The board is also announcing a change to the Reserve Banks' usual practices to allow the provision of term financing for as long as 30 days, renewable by the borrower. These changes will remain in place until the Federal 
Reserve determines that market liquidity has improved materially. These changes are designed to provide depositories with greater assurance about the cost & availability of funding. The Federal Reserve will continue to accept a broad range of collateral for discount window loans, including home mortgages & related assets. Existing collateral margins will be maintained.”This is scary stuff. At the Daily Reckoning newsletter, I got the kind of view I expect from that quarter: “As we point out in our soon-to-be released book, Mobs, messiahs & markets, every market is a public spectacle. And every public spectacle follows a certain pattern. It begins with lies & humbug “emergency” low lending rates from the Fed...faith-based currency...stocks for the long-run. Then, it progresses into farce hedge funds...low-doc mortgage loans...and “cove-lite” LBO financing. And finally, it ends in disaster.”

Then it ran to a TV interview with Dr Doom, Marc Faber, among whose comments was this: “What I noticed is investors are far more concerned to miss the next leg in the bull market on the upside, than about the risks of losing a lot of money. And I think, gradually this will change, and that will mean lower equity prices...and also prices of other assets such as commodities can go down substantially and obviously home prices around the world.”

Then Bill Bonner mentioned that his son, Will, was living in Buenos Aires but on holiday, and had made the 3-day trip to get to their back-of-beyond ranch. Some of the stories from these excursions have been fascinating, so on I read, hoping for some illustration….  In his blog, one of his most recent entries was about New Zealand farmers selling up here and investing in Uruguay. How did he come by this information? Well, one of his mates in Buenos Aires is Geoff McRae….

Bruno 9Li's inspirations come from daily life experiences of the diverse population of its residents (European, Japanese and Latin American descent) as well as his search for life's meaning through spirituality, alchemy and cultural symbolisms. 

He often speaks of "all being one," and is deeply aware of the unity of people, animals and nature itself. 9Li creates works of art that share this vision with his audience through epic encounters of natural and supernatural beings. These encounters, depending on the viewer, can be seen as mythic morality tales of the past, or a keen foretelling of the future.

In his exhibit, Mysterium Tremendum ( Overwhelming Mystery ) at Anno Domini, there are works that incorporate mutations of man and beast, beast and nature, man and the elements of nature. Bruno painted the walls to give the drawings* a connection to one another... the body of work being a bigger story and each image being a chapter of that story.

Dia e hora dos jogos das próximas rodadas das Eliminatórias

O Brasil tem boas chances para ganhar posições na tabela. Primeiro joga contra o Chile, que está acima da nossa seleção. Uma vitória no Estádio Nacional de Santiago, onde será disputada a partida, faria o Brasil subir ao menos uma posição. Caso a Colômbia não possa superar o Uruguai, o Brasil escalaria duas posições.

O prato forte da sétima rodada é o confronto entre o líder Paraguai e a escolta Argentina. O jogo será em Buenos Aires, onde os locais tentarão vencer e ficar com a ponta da tabela. Para o Brasil, é melhor que haja um empate.

Na oitava rodada, nossa seleção enfrenta a Bolívia, em casa. A Bolívia é a penúltima colocada, com apenas quatro pontos em seis jogos disputados. É um rival acessível; no entanto, não devemos esquecer que na sexta rodada os bolivianos derrotaram o líder Paraguai por 4 x 2.

Contudo, muito pode acontecer durante os Jogos des-Olímpicos, onde o Brasil tentará finalmente conseguir o ouro olímpico no futebol. Isso só acontecerá se o Dunga abandonar a defensiva, e armar uma seleção com uma tática de verdade, ao invés de criar um amontoado jogadores.

Pelo menos, vamos contar com o Ronaldinho Gaúcho.

Today, septemper 7th, is Brazil's Independence Day. Exactly 186 years ago, Dom Pedro I, royal prince in charge of the portuguese colony back then, took his sword out of the sheath near the River (where the city of São Paulo is nowadays) and yelled "independence or death!", being after that declared Dom Pedro I, Emperor of Brazil.*

Practically two centuries have passed by, and we have no kind of submissive relations with our former metropolis. In fact, we are way ahead of Portugal in a lot of subjects. But, in a modern perspective, can Brazil consider itself really independent from anything?

My opinion is that no, we have never truly experienced a real independent life, and there's still a long way to go before we can think of calling ourselves independent.

I say that based on the conception of independence that matters not only to foreign relations, but mainly to internal issues.

It's easy to notice a lack of credibility to the country's independence day. Public patriotic demonstrations are becoming more and more rare when the september seventh's arrive in the calendar. Several military parades are happening right now throughout our territory, but who attends to them? Last year's parade in Brasília, our capital and home of the largest military parade, had the not so impressive mark of less spectators in the history.

Does that shows a common sense of disbelief in this so-called independence? I say yes. When you go to the United States, England, France, Germany or Italy (or any developed country), every corner, every building, public or private, have their countries flag raised on poles. Independence days are celebrated at its fullest. In Brazil, not even big cities City Halls have the country's flag waving on top of them.

In a country where government let people die in hospital waiting lines, die with no medication, die from abandon, die because of the crescent and apparently uncontrollable urban violence, die with no education, die with hunger, die with no perspectives, no dreams, no hope... it's easy to understand why flags only come out in World Cup period.

Personal independence is also a matter of analysis in big cities. People are more and more often depending on luck to live everyday. There are some periods in the day-by-day living in Brazil, specially when media coverage shows murders and shootings like they where showing soccer goals, that you actually believe returning home after a day of work is not guaranteed as it seems.

We have a long way before calling ourselves independent. We must break from the chains of corruption, populism and personal interests in the public sphere, and from the irons of apathy in the private sphere. Then, one day, we may actually celebrate our independence and cheer a true condition of free human beings. 

* Modern historiography considers that the process of brazilian independence from Portugal started when the portuguese Royal Family first came here, in 1808, running away from Napoleon's army. Also, the utterly romantic version of Dom Pedro I shouting such words of independence mounted on a horse is questioned too.

O eleitorado do município, medido pelo Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE), é 25% maior que a estimativa populacional, divulgada pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) na última semana.

Com 1.434 eleitores a mais que a população, Severiano Melo é o primeiro da lista de 90 municípios revelada em levantamento feito pela Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC), que aponta as cidades com divergência entre os números de eleitorado e estimativa populacional. Os números do TSE são do balanço mais recente do tribunal, de julho, após o cancelamento de mais de 1,8 milhão de títulos.

“A última contagem do IBGE feita aqui contabilizou vários sítios que ficam ao redor da cidade como se fizessem parte do município vizinho, por causa da utilização de GPS que mostrava essas áreas fora dos nossos limites. Mas mantemos escolas e postos com dinheiro da prefeitura lá; é população do município de Severiano Melo”, justificou um assessor financeiro da prefeitura Neusion Holanda.

Segundo Holanda, a prefeitura perdeu inclusive recursos do Fundo de Participação dos Municípios por causa da exclusão desses territórios na contagem populacional do município. “Estamos tentando a reeleição e depois vamos até tentar recorrer, pedir uma revisão, porque saímos prejudicados”, acrescentou.

Minas Gerais é o estado que concentra o maior número de municípios com mais eleitorado que população, 21 dos 90 identificados no cruzamento de informações do TSE e do IBGE. Há municípios no estado em que o eleitorado corresponde a 137% dos habitantes, caso de Tapiraí, a 250 quilômetros de Belo Horizonte.

De acordo com o juiz auxiliar da Corregedoria Eleitoral do Tribunal Regional Eleitoral de Minas Gerais, José do Carmo Veiga, todos as cidades mineiras que aparecem na lista passaram por revisão do eleitorado em 2007, o que, segundo ele, praticamente inviabiliza a possibilidade de fraude. “Cancelamos mais de 200 mil títulos em 174 municípios.

O TRE trabalha com dados levantados a cada período eleitoral até o dia 7 de maio de cada pleito. Isso pode gerar uma diferença, porque o IBGE não faz censos oficiais anualmente. O IBGE divulga estimativas da população e não de um levantamento efetivo da população; e estimativas não tem a oficialidade do censo”, argumentou.

Goiás e São Paulo aparecem em seguida, com 11 municípios cada, seguidos de Rio Grande do Norte e Rio Grande do Sul, cada um com com nove casos de cidades com mais eleitores que habitantes.

O município catarinense de Ermo, que em 2007 aparecia no topo de levantamento semelhante feito antes da revisão do eleitorado, aparece em sexto lugar na lista atual. Segundo o TSE, 2.418 eleitores de Ermo estão aptos a votar em outubro. Já de acordo com o IBGE, a população total do município, o que inclui menores de 16 anos, que não votam – é de 1.877 habitantes.

De acordo com o TSE, o domicílio eleitoral não implica necessariamente residência na mesma localidade, o que pode justificar as divergências estatísticas. Um cidadão pode morar em uma cidade, mas votar ou candidatar-se em outra. “É distinto o conceito de domicílio eleitoral do domicílio civil”, informou a assessoria do tribunal por meio de nota.

Segundo o Código Eleitoral, “estando o eleitor patrimonialmente ligado à localidade”, com vínculos políticos, sociais ou econômicos, não há impedimento para que o domicílio eleitoral seja fora da cidade em que o eleitor reside.

O juiz do TRE mineiro acrescentou que além da desvinculação entre os domicílios civil e eleitoral, há muitos eleitores que mudam de cidade e optam por justificar o voto

I had never heard of Tim Maia, and discovered him back in the spring surfing around and listening to samples on iTunes. Soul of Brazil is a compilation of songs done mostly in the 70s, that fuse American soul with Brazilian styles. It's an outstanding CD. Tim Maia passed away in 1998.

The Seamstress: A Novel by Frances De Pontes Peebles

Some of the best aspects of reading fiction are visiting places you may never otherwise see and providing a glimpse of what it might be like to live in a different time in history.  The Seamstress, which takes place mainly between Taquaritinga and Recife, Brazil during the late 1920s and early 1930s, is an engaging novel that provides the opportunity for both.  It tells the story of Emilia and Luzia dos Santos, orphaned sisters who are raised by their Aunt Sofia, the seamstress for the community's Colonel.  The sisters, while very different people, both find peace, creative release, and ultimately their destinies in sewing.

Emilia dos Santos is the oldest sister, and she has high aspirations for her life.  She is not content to remain forever in Taquaritinga, a small interior town whose prospects do not allow her, despite her charm, the ability to rise above her warm, yet meager existence.  Her refusal to consider the many bachelors who have asked Aunt Sofia for her hand has given her a reputation for being a young woman who thinks too highly of herself, but she finds her escape in her collection of Fon Fon magazines, which provide patterns for the latest fashions along with guidance on being a lady and short stories about gentlemen and romance.  What gives her hope is marrying a gentleman and moving to Recife, where life is beautiful and full of opportunity.

Luzia dos Santos is quite the opposite from her sister.  She has no interest at all in her sister's fashion magazines or fantasies of Recife.  As a young child she fell from a tree and broke her arm.  Because of the inadequate medical care she received, her arm is permanently bent at a 90 degree angle.  Her disability makes ends all prospects of marriage for her and she becomes somewhat of an outcast in Taquaritinga, earning herself the knickname Victrola because her arm resembled the arm of the popular record player.  Unlike Emilia, Luzia rebels against society and its ways.  She fights every way she can because she sees no real future for herself until The Hawk and his band of cangaceiros invade Taquaritinga looking for water during the dry season.

Brazil in the early part of the 20th century was a corrupt and harsh place to live, especially outside of the large cities surrounding the coast.  There was no fully authoritative centralized government, so the wealthy landowners, or Colonels, ruled their territory as they saw fit.  The ease of life in the interior portions of the country was very much dependent upon the weather and the life experience of the current Colonel.  As many of them were prone to be tyrants, this gave rise to the cangacos, groups of bandits who roamed throughout the countryside as nomads in search of food, money and, above all else, revenge against the Colonels and gentry.  Emilia and Luzia came of age at a time when a powerful leader to over power in the central government through revolution and began to take power away from the Colonels.  This change in political climate brought reforms, but also chaos into the country.  As much as it is about the vastly different lives Emilia and Luzia led, The Seamstress tells the story of how the relationship between coastal and interior Brazil changed this new government took hold of the country.

Emilia and Luzia found that getting what they wanted always comes at a price.  Because of their background, they are never fully welcomed in the communities they joined.  What kept them from alienation and made them whole was the only things they took with them from Taquaritinga, their survival skills and their passion for sewing.  When they find themselves at odds in the new political climate, will their bond be enough to save them?

The author really brings to life both the environmental harshness of the arid Brazilian countryside and the political and social harshness of Recife.  While the cangaceiros were fighting to stay relevant in an age when the Colonels were losing stature and authority, the upper class in Recife were fighting to rid the country of the terror created by these random acts of violence and retribution.  The fear felt by the establishment opened the door to use phrenology to catalog criminals in order to predict who will become harmful to the state.  It was a fascinating look at a developing Latin American country.

The Seamstress expertly blends the threads of family, culture, crime, punishment, sin and redemption into a beautiful canvas that highlights both an exotic land and an intriguing time in Latin American history.  While it took me a while to read this book, there isn't any part that felt unnecessary or should have otherwise not been included.  I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel.  I grew to care deeply for Emilia and Luzia and was interested in their world.  I hope to learn more from Brazil and look forward to reading more from Frances De Pontes Peebles in the future.  The story of these sisters and their country will stay with me for a long time to come.
