I'm a big fan of Len Deighton and I love the 60s Harry Palmer films. Michael Caine was the ultimate in understated cool in the role and a great icon for the times. The Ipcress File is supposedly the best but I think Funeral in Berlin beats it hands down.

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Wednesday 3rd September):

Birth

1982. Dennis Wilson's girlfriend Shawn Love (illegitimate daughter of his cousin Mike Love) gives birth to his son, Gage.

Not In Space

2002. A spokesman for the Russian Space Agency today announced that Lance Bass, singer with 'N Sync, has been asked to leave the Star City cosmonaut complex outside Moscow where he has been training for a trip to the international space station. Despite at least one extension to the deadline for receipt of sponsorship money, the $ 20 million, payable in advance, had still not been received. Had the trip gone as planned, Bass would, at 23 years old, have been the youngest person ever in space and only the third paying passenger on a Russian flight to the space station.

In Custody

1999. Nikki Sixx is arrested after a Motley Crue show in Raleigh, North Carolina and charged on four counts - felony riot plus misdemeanour offences of assault, disorderly conduct and inciting a riot. All the charges relate to a concert in Greensboro in October 1997 when Sixx and Tommy Lee hurled racist abuse at a security guard and encouraged the crowd to attack him. Lee was not arrested as he didn't play at tonight's show. Unless he turns himself in, Sheriff B.J. Barnes has said he will post Lee on a national wanted list. If that happens, the drummer could be arrested anywhere in the U.S. and forcibly returned to Greensboro. Sixx is released early the following morning after posting a $ 7,500 bond.

If the criminal charges weren't enough, both Crue members have a civil trial to look forward to in November.

In Court

1970. In a list of petitions published at the Divorce Court in London today, it's revealed that both Marianne Faithfull (23) and her husband, John Dunbar (26), have filed for divorce. The couple, who married in 1965, have been separated for the past 18 months. Marianne has simply filed for divorce but in a cross plea, Dunbar has named Mick Jagger. The cases are due to be heard in October.

Written by Kit Burns

In the unpredictable world of rock & roll, there are has-beens and wanna-be's, but what about the should-have-beens? The Brymers had the punky spunk and snappy pop hooks of the best British Invasion groups of the '60s; however, mainstream success eluded them. Over the past couple of decades, their lost Summer of Love nuggets "Sacrifice" and "I Want to Tell You" became sought-after cult items. Since young acts such as the Strokes and the Hives made garage rock a hip alternative to much of today's processed cheese, the Brymers are finally starting to get recognition a la their Pacific Northwest counterparts the Sonics. They even decided to reunite, and original drummer Dick Lee discusses how it all transpired.

Kit Burns: The Brymers could've been as big as the Kinks in the '60s but somehow didn't quite reach that highest ladder. What happened? Did the group receive interest from the major labels back then?

Dick Lee: The Brymers band was signed by Diplomacy Records and a Los Angeles entertainment agency called "Coast Artists." I will never forget walking into the CEO of Coast Artists and hearing them talking about packaging, promoting, and selling the Brymers. At one point during the conversation, the CEO excused himself and took a telephone call from Ed Sullivan. Needless to say, as young 18-year-olds we were amazed. The Brymers' first recordings were in 1963 in a small studio in Fresno, California. The group rented a studio and along with five cases of beer, recorded two surf songs. We had no idea what we were doing, but had a great time. The songs were "Irritation" and "More of More." In 1965, the Brymers began recording in Hollywood, California at Harmony Studios. The group recorded "Only by Your Own," "I Should Be Glad," "Hello Little Girl," and "Every Moment of the Day." In early 1966, we re-entered the studio and recorded a song written by our keyboard player Kenny Sinner ("I Want To Tell You"). The track featured four-piece harmonies and sounded like the Byrds or Buffalo Springfield. The A&R man in the studio thought we might have captured a hit. The problem was we need a B-side so the group went to lunch, and over a few beers and hamburgers, Kenny Sinner wrote out a song on a napkin called "Sacrifice." All of us laughed because the lyrics did not make sense, but it was uptempo and featured fuzz and harmonica. During the same session, the group recorded "Under My Thumb" for Diplomacy Records' 16-year-old daughter to sing. Her name was April Silva. About three weeks later, we learned that Mercury Records wanted to purchased "I Want To Tell You," but asked that we write new lyrics to reflect the political climate against the Vietnam War. Kenny Sinner wrote new lyrics and re-named the song "Make Love Not War." We then recorded it on the Mercury label. The group could never get a straight answer about the progress of the releases from Diplomacy Records. As a working, touring rock group we continued to play around the country.

Fourteen months ago, I was surfing the web and accidentally found a garage punk site called GaragePunk.Com. I entered a forum and asked if anyone had ever heard of a 1960s California group called the Brymers. I immediately began getting e-mails from all over the U.S., Europe, and Australia stating that they had heard of the group and the song "Sacrifice." Until that night I had no idea that anyone had ever heard of the Brymers or "Sacrifice." I also began receiving calls from different record companies asking if I had any other Brymers recordings. As a pack rat, I had kept the masters, old 1960s dance posters, and about 300 photos in the attic. I also found a seven spiral notebooks which were journal entries I kept of all our touring and funny stories that occurred over a five year period. Needless to say, much of it is X-rated and rather embarrassing. But, did we ever have a great time!

Burns: How did the Brymers form?

Lee: The Brymers was formed in 1962 and originally called the Challengers. We had three guitar players and practiced excessively in my parents' garage in Lemoore, California. The group started out as a surf band (that was the music of the day) and gradually transitioned into a good vocal rock band. After three months the group changed its name again. The band's new name was the De-Fenders (from the Fender amps). The group began playing locally for high schools, teen dances, etc. One of our close friends became a local DJ for station KCOK and a dance promoter. His name was Mel Simas and his promotion business was called Melco Interprises. He asked if he could be our manager; in exchange, he would bring in top rock acts from around the country, and we would back them up in concerts and in recording sessions. He would also feature the de-Fenders in large venues with well-known rock groups. This started our experience of playing with some of the best-known rock acts of the day. In 1965, Simas became associated with Bill Silva (president of Diplomacy Records). This started our recording career, but little did we know that Diplomacy did not have the distribution and contacts to really push our recordings. A few months later, Diplomacy and Coast Artists had the De-Fenders come to Hollywood at an upscale saloon for a publicity op. Little did we know that we would be getting all of our long hair cut off in front of TV cameras and teen magazine photographers. The record company announced that the group's new name was the Brymers (sounds like Brimmers). Diplomacy's rationale was that the bald heads, the Brymers name would be associated with the actor Yul Brynner. Needless to say that this did not occur. The Brymers taped a segment for a TV show called Shindig! in 1966, but the show was cancelled prior to the Brymers appearance. The group continued touring around the country as a working band.

Burns: That garage-rock sound that the Brymers helped to pioneer is now the lifeblood of so many new young acts. Did you ever think it would come back around?

Lee: As mentioned before, prior to 14 months ago I never new that anyone had ever heard of the Brymers or the B-side "Sacrifice." I am still amazed that individuals are interested in the '60s sound with the loud fuzz, wailing harmonica, and Hammond B3. A funny story occurred around the recording of "Sacrifice" in 1966. We were in Harmony Studios, Los Angeles, and trying to figure out how to come up with an into to this crazy fuzz-driven song that was written in 15 minutes on a napkin. Sinner said, "Hey, I've got to go to a pawn shop – will be back in the studio in one hour." He ran out of the studio, and we had no idea of where he was going. When he returned, he had this 17" speaker. He then proceeded to take his small amp apart and installed this huge 17" speaker (3/4 of it was hanging out of the back). Sinner then turned his amp volume and 52 telecaster volume up as high as it would go. He asked the engineer to roll the tape, and Sinner picked his amp up about three feet, then dropped it on the floor; the result was the intro to "Sacrifice." As we were laying down the track, sparks began coming out of the amp and more distortion on the fuzz began to occur. We all thought it sounded very cool, then the amp caught on fire. The engineer ran out of the control booth and began yelling, "You fucking idiots are going to burn down the studio." Sinner replied, "Now, that's the sound I was looking for on 'Sacrifice.'"

Burns: What are some of your favorite rock experiences of being in San Francisco back in the day?

Lee: The Brymers played in San Francisco a lot during 1965, 1966, and 1967 (the Summer of Love). We had some great times and played on some great venues and met many musician friends of the day. The Blues Project, Jefferson Airplane, and Creedence Clearwater Revival were only a few. It is difficult to describe the time to individuals who were not there. The war protesting against Vietnam was at its height, free food was being distributed by a lot of people in the city, and "Make Love Not War" was the anthem of the time. Drugs were prevalent and provided to us; everyone was high, we were playing great concerts with some cool musicians, and we were screwing our asses off. Needless to say, we embraced the anthem "Make Love Not War." One funny experience in 1967 occurred after a concert with multiple groups on the venue. We all returned to our hotel room with many groupies and stripped naked and began a screwing marathon. About 5 a.m. Bobby Hollister (lead guitar and vocals) for the Brymers entered the room and introduced us all to this beautiful blonde he had met after the concert. He then went to the adjoining hotel room and everything was quiet. Soon, we heard "Oh shit, oh shit, fuck me" and a scream. Hollister ran from the room into our room totally nude and was yelling, "She's a guy, she's a guy and has a dick." Little did he know that he had hooked up with a female impersonator from a club in North Beach. As good friends would do, we never let him forget that experience. The experience of being in a rock band during the 1960s is difficult to articulate. It was one of the greatest memories of my life. I think one of the coolest things revolves around local bands who started playing music at the same time and then nabbed a few hits. For example, a group who frequently opened for us was called the Sullies; its drummer later became the lead singer for Journey. The lead singer for the Implicits later joined a San Jose group called The Doobie Brothers, and the list goes on. The Brymers officially disbanded in late 1968. I then joined a group from a California surfing community called Pismo Beach. Its leader, Merrell Fankhauser, wrote "Wipe Out" in 1962. With Fankhauser, we recorded an album called Fapardokly. But this is another story for another time.

Birth

1946. Mik Kaminski (Electric Light Orchestra) born in Harrogate, Yorkshire.

On Tour

1965. Viv Prince, drummer with The Pretty Things, is escorted from a plane at Auckland, New Zealand, moments before it left for the United States with other members of the group on board. Prince had been involved in several "boisterous scenes" in the airport terminal and boarded the plane banging a tambourine. Even after all the passengers were seated, the flight didn't close. Airport officials went on board. After an argument with Prince in the gangway, they managed to escort him off the plane and back to the terminal. From there a police officer took him to a waiting car, driven by a member of a local pop group.

In Court

1997. John Denver appears in court in Colorado for a hearing to decide what charge he will face at a re-trial following the hung jury at his drunk driving trial last July. He will either face the same charge of drunk driving or a lesser one of driving with ability impaired. The judge makes no decision but will take some time to consider what to do.

In Hospital

1973. (Sunday) This weekend John Simos drummer with Peter Frampton's Camel is hospitalised suffering from infectious hepatitis.

A memory of Lex's favorite Beatles album

Somewhere back in time it's summer 1977, and I'm getting the hell scared out of me by a strange noise entitled "Tomorrow Never Knows." Although at that point in my life I was familiar with a lot of Beatles songs, nothing prepared me for the aural assault that was Revolver.

It sounded different from all of the previous Beatles records I had acquired. The sound had a different texture, and not every song dealt with romantic love. Where my previous Beatles records were charming and innocent, Revolver painted a psychedelic rainbow all over their earlier work. It was at once harmonic and dissonant, whimsical and melancholy, wry and acerbic. I didn't know it at the time, but it was destined to be my favorite Beatles record of all time.

It took years to be able to sit and listen to the vinyl without lifting the needle to skip a track. Granted, most 8 year old kids probably wouldn't sit through George Harrison's Indian-flavored "Love You To." Maybe Paul's "Eleanor Rigby" was a bit too arty and poetic. And "Yellow Submarine?" Come on; that's a kid's song. I may have been 8, but I was way past singing to the cartoon. I would learn to love these songs in time, but I fell in love with the obvious songs first. George's "Taxman" was my first favorite, followed by Paul's "Good Day Sunshine," "For No One" and "Here, There, and Everywhere," and John Lennon's "She Said She Said."

Somewhere back in time it's summer 1987, and the entire Beatles catalog is now available on these new-fangled compact discs. I buy them all, one at a time. Revolver is now in it's original British format, with songs I originally found on another Capitol "money-making" compilation called Yesterday . . . and Today. Suddenly, everything came into focus. The sound textures all collided and it made sense. The Beatles experienced a giant growth spurt, and it is most evident on Revolver.

At 18, I could sit still for George's Indian-flavored song, along with his wonderfully dissonant "I Want To Tell You." John's "Tomorrow Never Knows" far out-stripped any of the "psychedelic" pop that I'd been collecting up till that point. Add his "Dr. Robert" and "And Your Bird Can Sing," and you get an album that is not only entertaining, but educational. Released in 1966, it was further evidence that rock music was heading past the point of being "disposable noise." Revolver, along with Dylan's Blonde on Blonde, the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds and the Stones' Aftermath, proved that pop music was now maturing past "bubblegum." It graduated to "rock music."

It's summer 2008, and at 39 I'm up (after working a miserable swing-into-graveyard shift) thinking and writing about my favorite band and my favorite album by that band. I won't bore you with talk about a time when every track on an album had to be an honest reflection of an artist. Time has changed that. Maybe it will change again before I'm gone. One thing that doesn't change is the fact that somewhere, out there, some band is playing Revolver and creating their own masterpiece.

If music is indeed the greatest part of the human spirit, then Revolver will survive the test of time. It has survived 42 years this August. Now, if you will excuse me while I turn off my "mind, relax and float downstream . . . "

Can you dig it? Right on.

For as long as I can remember, there has always been Isaac Hayes. His music, bald head, gold chains, sunglasses and deep, rich, bass voice are all woven into the tapestry of my past. He was one of the main architects for southern rhythm and blues and soul music during the late 60s and into the 70s. Isaac's Hot Buttered Soul album hung on the wall of the family music room. To this day, I still remember that spooky feeling of "desperate inner pain" that pulsates from the intro of his version of "Walk On By." Let's not forget that sweet, soulful version of Jimmy Webb's "By The Time I Get To Phoenix."

Let us not forget that Isaac's also the guy who wrote and produced some of the most endearing songs of the 60s. Along with his writing partner, David Porter, Isaac wrote songs like "Soul Man," "You Don't Know Like I Know," "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby," and "Hold On, I'm Coming."

By the time he delivered his Black Moses album in '71, he had his finger on the pulse. Every guy on my block wanted to be him, and all of the ladies wanted to be with him. In my house, Isaac Hayes was preferred over Michael Jackson and Donny Osmond.

Above all, I remember how great the "(Theme from) Shaft" sounded on my tiny transistor radio. In the early 70's, "Shaft" sounded like no other Top 10 pop song on the radio. Soulful strings, funky backbeat, and a wicked wah-wah guitar gave this song something for everyone to enjoy. And of course, there is the low, bass voice that tells you a bit about the subject of the song:

Who's the black private dick
That's a sex machine to all the chicks?
Shaft!
(Ya damn right!)

Who is the man that would risk his neck
For his brother man?
Shaft!
(Can you dig it?)

Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?
Shaft!
(Right On!)

They say this cat Shaft is a bad mother
(Shut yo' mouth!
I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft.
(Then we can dig it!)

He's a complicated man
But no one understands him but his woman
John Shaft!
With this song, Isaac won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and two Grammy Awards. In fact, the same year he won the two Grammys for "Shaft," he won an additional Grammy for his work on Black Moses. He was a composer, arranger, and producer extraordinaire.

Some may remember him as the voice of "Chef" from South Park. Others may recall that he was a Scientologist. I'll always recall the unique and excellent music he left us. Happy birthday, Issac. We love you and miss you, and will never forget you.

Yes, we can dig it.

Please note that Hot Buttered Soul was originally released in August 1969.

I used to make fun of the Bee Gees.

In the late 70s, it was easy to imitate and poke fun of Barry Gibb's high falsetto. It didn't care that I pissed off my aunt Angie, who was (and still is) a devoted Bee Gees fan. They were, after all, not the Beatles. Angie played the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever with absolute fervor. While she danced and sang along, I imitated Barry and Robin, and scorned Maurice (the one that looked "funny"). I hated disco, and that's what they represented to me.

At some point during their heyday, they issued a double live album. Alongside their more contemporary hits, they performed some older material that struck my brain in a funny way. These songs included "New York Mining Disaster 1941," "Gotta Get a Message to You," "Run to Me," and "Massachusetts." All of a sudden, I wasn't imitating them anymore. The songs got me right in the heart, as if I'd heard them before.

Suddenly, there was an album in Angie's collection called Gold, which covered 60s Bee Gees' pop song brilliance. Songs like "Words" and "World" oozed from the speakers, and I couldn't get enough. The song that floored me then (and still does to this day) is "To Love Somebody." Barry wrote this after meeting with one of his idols, Otis Redding. The Bee Gees' manager told Barry to write a song for Otis to perform, and Barry's response was this classic pop tune. I still get goosebumps thinking about the first time I heard this song in its entirely.

So, for a while, I could tolerate 60s Bee Gees, and the soundtrack they provided for the Alan Parker film Melody. There is something heartbreaking about Barry's "First of May" that makes you want to cry. His "Give Your Best" is one of the most fun songs to listen to; it reminds me of old friends and the folly of being young.

But that didn't stop me from loathing the whole disco era Bee Gees phenomena - until Clover Club Paul showed me the light.

On a trip to his house to get more gear for a Clover Club jam session, Paul played "How Deep Is Your Love" in his car. I groaned aloud, something to the effect of "Man, not this. Why this?" While waiting for our red light to go green, he said, "Listen to that clean, simple production. The melody stays in your head when you're not thinking about it. The vocal harmonies are inventive and crisp. How can you not like this song? When you get a chance, listen to it as a piece of music, not as disco."

Paul, of course, was right. I bought the sheet music and discovered that it was inventive, and a complete bitch to learn (it took me weeks to figure it out). Once I did, I couldn't stop playing it because it was fun. I played it on acoustic guitar at some shindig my ex-girlfriend dragged me to, and the girls at the party could not get enough of that song. Seems that girls really dig love songs for some odd reason.

Not long ago, I purchased a DVD called This Is Where I Came In, which documents the Bee Gees's history from the late 50s onward, just before Maurice's untimely death. I guess the old saying is correct; it's never too late to learn new lessons. I learned that making fun of my aunt Angie's beloved Bee Gees was just ignorance on my part. I also learned that Barry Gibb and his brothers provided a soundtrack for millions of people for decades. Not many artists can claim this, but it holds true for the brothers Gibb. I learned that there are road maps to greatness buried in their songs. Every songwriter should study the writing of Barry Gibb.

Thanks, Angie! I will still send you original 60s and 70s Bee Gees vinyl when I locate them.

Happy birthday, Barry (Sept.1). It finally came into focus for me, but it took 30-plus years to realize that you've been a part of the soundtrack of my life all of this time. Your songs are awe-inspiring and classic. How would you like to work together on a song sometime?

Readers: Be advised that Best of Bee Gees was originally released in June 1969

Initially, I had not planned to submit for this week's Photo Friday because time did not permit me to take a picture of an old vehicle. Additionally, I did not have any photos that I had previously taken. But the rules were adjusted somewhat this week, whereas we can submit pics that we did not take. So I thought I'd share a picture taken in the early 60's of my mother and aunt Anna. Both have gone on to another realm; bless their souls. To see this pic in a larger view; please visit my photo blog or click on the pic .

Sunday afternoons after church in the 60's were so full of neighborhood and family values: Families and friends gathering together for Soul Food, good conversation--everyone wearing their Sunday best - so full of love and tradition. Boy do I ever miss those days. I myself often carry out the Sunday tradition; but unlike the days of old, it's always me doing all the cooking and most of us did not come from church! Wow do I miss the days when many of the women gathered in the steamy kitchen talking trash, laughing - whilst the men, admiring their families, talked "business" in the dining room. Now I know that we've progressed so much from the 60's; but some things, in my opinion, did not promote progress, but a sense of individuality bringing forth separation that saddens me. No longer do I see the community and family unity - everyone's for self now. This, in my opinion, has caused depression, poverty, violence and a malady of social problems. So today, let's strive to live that life of the 60's, and bring family and community together.

Sunday Afternoons After Church ~By CordieB

Oh how I miss the days of old . . .

When family unity was the goal

Of every bright or weary soul

Oh how I miss the lost tradition

When helping hands was the mission

When we knew all our neighbor's names

When we'd speak to all who peacefully came

walking down the clean sidewalks

stopping for friendly gossip and small talk

When neighbors would watch over the young

and everyone knew every one

when neighbors could spank that ass

for talking smart or acting fast

and then I'd get another one

after the neighbor told my dad or mom

When children still played hide and seek

When strong families always helped the weak

When unity meant what it should

and not simply another cliche' buzz word

When fathers could not abandon theirs

without humilitation, points and stares

and of course lots and lots of old folk's prayers

When the corner store owner lived in the neighborhood

and there was no such thing as "living in the hood"

And people usually acted like they knew they should

The Sunday afternoons after church dismissed

When family and neigbors gathered to reminice

And laugh and cry and love each other

and every one was treated like a sister or brother

I miss it all, but alas life goes on

So at least I'll carry the tradition on

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Sunday 31st August):

Birth

1947. Pete Gage (Vinegar Joe) born.

On Tour

1991. Guns N' Roses and support band Skid Row play London's Wembley Stadium. Both bands were allowed to play after receiving written instructions banning them from swearing or leaving the stage at any time during their performances. At one point, Skid Row read out their letter from Brent Council instructing them not to perform the song, "Get The Fuck Out". This prompts the crowd to chant the title repeatedly before the band do play it. Not to be outdone, Axl Rose lambasts the media for their reaction to the band and their poster campaign - "Guns N' Fucking Roses, Wembley Fucking Stadium, Sold Fucking Out". Brent council later say the bands would never have been allowed to play had they not given written undertakings to abide by their instructions. While the council refuse to say if they will now ban both groups, they do admit it will have an effect on license applications.

In Court

1989. Shane McGowan appears at Marylebone Magistrates Court charged with possession of cannabis. He pleads guilty and is fined £ 150. The court is told that the offence came to light when he was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

On The Radio

1990. The Cure try launching their own pirate radio station, Cure 94.8. Broadcasting to the London area. The station runs into a mass of technical problems, eventually starting more than three hours late with Robert Smith at the microphone. They soon give up after discovering that their signal is being swamped by BBC Radio 2 and shelve plans for any future broadcasts.

Bomber Billy And Barry 'Bama I:

Bringin' It All Back Home

by

R.E. Prindle

Barry want to squelch those ads linking him with Bomber Billy Ayers and Bad Motorcycle Berardine Dohrn real bad and with good reason. Guilt by association? Not by a long shot. Bomber Bill is now a professor of Education while education is a peculiarly large plank in Barry's platform. The two boys have a lot in common.

Bomber Bill is a full fledged psychotic. He has today the same psychosis that he had back in the sixties when he was mixin' up the medicine in the basement. It hasn't changed; it has only deepened. Back then the little ol' slogan monger created such dillies as 'Bring The Revolution Home' and 'Kill Your Parents'.

Managing to commit crimes the Moslem Terrorists could, and maybe did, learn from Ayers, who although admitting guilt escaped all punishment. 'Guilty as sin, free as a bird.' As he put it. Rather than becoming a pariah in society he was given sanctuary by U. Illinois where he is today a tenured professor of, get this, education.

He has written a series of books, none of which I have read, but the titles are instructive of the nature and depth of his psychosis.

'A Kind And Just Parent' would seem to refer to his psychotic reaction to his own parents who he obviously considered unkind and unjust. While advising others to kill their parents The Mad Bomber failed to kill his. Pop is now behind his boy urging him on.

'To teach' I should think refers to passing his monkey along.

'Zero Tolerance: Risisting The Drive For Punishment In Our Schools.' Billy apparently thinks he was treated harshly in school. For myself, attending grade school in the forties, I neither experienced punishment of any kind nor did I see any. If the Bomber thinks he was punished he must be very sensitive. Perhaps the answer can be sought in his next title: Teaching Towards Freedom: Moral Commitment And Ethical Action For The Classroom.

Bill is not the man I would go to for instruction in moral commitment or ethical action but there he is leading the innocent children towards freedom. Put the titles together: A Kind And Just Parent, Zero Tolerance and Teaching Towards Freedom.

What does freedom mean to the Communist? It means the ability to indulge your every whim. That means being 'sexually liberated.' Society is and always has been opposed to homosexuality. Society has always rigidly taught that homosexuality is psychotic behavior and should be abjured at all costs. Therefore by the 'cruel and unnatural' methods of traditional education 'freedom' is being denied. The current drive is to teach pederasty in kindergarten as a move toward sexual freedom. Who is behind this movement? I suspect a driving force will be found to be Bomber Billy Ayers and his disciple Barry 'Bama.

If one listens to Barry, the head of the Pederast Party, he's right there pushing pederasty under tne names of justice and freedom. The connection between Bomber Bill and Barry 'Bama begins to become clearer and it's not mere association.

Babble

The long-running saga of the memorabilia exhibition seemed to get a new lease of life yesterday. A visit to the Red Shoes Theatre in Elgin ended up with an agreement that it would be staged the week after next. It will be tied in with a charity fund-raiser but exactly how long it will run remains to be seen. It also seems likely that I'll get a Two Red Shoes ballroom blog up as I did for the sister venue, The Ballerina Ballroom in Nairn.

You'll see I've included the handbill for the 1969 Isle Of Wight Festival which started on this day. I'll now do a blatant plug and tell you that I'm selling it on the Handbills and Flyers section of Rockmine.

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Monday 1st September):

Birth

1955. Bruce Foxton (The Jam) born in Woking, England.

On Stage

1979. It's revealed that the stage for tonight's performance at Edinburgh's Rock Festival had to be specially designed as the headlining act, Van Morrison, suffers from Vertigo if the stage is more than six feet high. Promoters for the festival, at Ingleston Showgrounds, said both the singer and the audience would be happy with the stage. Morrison's problem came to light earlier in the year when he played Glasgow's Apollo Theatre. During the show he never left the safety of the piano as the only other microphone was too close to the edge of one of Britain's tallest stages!

In Court

1999. An acrimonious three year legal battle between George Clinton and his former talent agent comes to an end in Los Angeles Superior Court. Clinton had originally been sued by the agent, Earl Ciccel, who claimed wrongful termination of his services. Clinton counter sued when he discovered Ciccel was not properly licensed as an agent and claimed back all monies collected on his behalf. Although Clinton won that suit, Ciccel was today succesful in getting a motion barring its enforcement on the basis that the court had already ruled in his favour regarding the original suit. Both parties will now have to share the legal expenses for the past three years.

In Politics

1967. The House Of Keys, the lower house of the Manx (Isle Of Man) Parliament is forced to accept the British government's ban on pirate radio stations. Mr. Charles Keruish, Speaker of The House Of Keys, said the British government may have the legal right to impose its will but lacked any moral justification. He said, "It's the first time that the mother country has forced unwanted legislation on the island, and that makes it the blackest day in the history of the relationship between the United Kingdom and the Isle Of Man". As a result of the legislation, residents of the island have been banned from assisting Radio Caroline International which is moored 4 miles off Ramsay. Ronan O'Rahilly, head of the Radio Caroline organisation, said the station would get its supplies from the continent and would not be leaving the area.
